How a Biscotti Break Makes Mom Life a Little Easier

Today’s lives move so fast. We often forget to take a break, a moment to just slow things down and breathe… A photo captures a moment forever.Do you take a “moment” just for yourself each day? I mean sure, it’d be nice if I was able to get out for a girl’s night out more often. Or maybe an afternoon of shopping, or a mani-pedi. Heck – some days it would be nice if I could just go to the bathroom by myself…. But, no matter how hectic the busy mom life gets, it’s important to find a way to carve out at least a little bit of time that’s just for you.

a mom moment

Yes, I know that taking a biscotti break isn’t the same as a day at the spa.

But it is a great little addition to my day – and honestly, it’s those little moments in each day that help keep stress at bay anyway, right? Nonni’s Biscotti is so perfect – high quality all-natural ingredients. The perfect combination of textures and flavors too – really lightly crunchy {not like the rock-hard store-bought biscotti’s that I’ve tried before}, with a great blend of sweetness. Seriously, these surprised me – The only biscotti that I’ve ever liked was the homemade version that my friend’s Italian mom and grandma used to make when I’d come to visit – but these Caramel Milk Chocolate bites are crazy good. I believe it when they call them an “Authentic Italian Family Recipe”, I’ve just never had such a good version that you could purchase off the shelf. They’re my new go-to morning snack… I slip out to the back patio with my newspaper, a bowl of biscotti, and a tall glass of iced coffee to dip them into – and for a half hour, it’s all me time, baby.

Because Your Mommy Loves You…

childrens books about mommy

“The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it.” – James Bryce

I love books. I’ve always been a big reader, ever since I was a little girl. I excelled in school mostly because of the fact that I devoured books so quickly. I love the way you can get lost in a good story, learn things about yourself by reading about someone else, and be inspired by the words of others. And while children’s books are more simple than the novels I read now, they have their own kind of beauty sometimes too. My Sister-in-Law gave me one when Abby was a baby – Love You Forever, and it’s so perfectly written that it still makes me cry when I read it. The mother sings this song to her baby as he grows – “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living, My baby you’ll be.” Then, when he’s all grown up, and his mother is old and frail, he rocks her in his arms, and sings to her. Seriously – lump in my throat just writing it. And that’s what a good book does – it moves you. And this new book, a follow up to Because Your Daddy Loves You by Andrew Clements, this story follows a mommy and son on a camping trip, and is a perfect combination of funny and sweet. Read more…

Because Your Mommy Loves You

“In this sweet companion book to Because Your Daddy Loves You, a little boy and his mom go on a hiking trip and camp out under the stars. Mommy is as calm and reassuring, but also goes far to foster her son’s independence in an encouraging and loving way. As heartwarming as its predecessor, this read-aloud book is sure to become a family favorite.”

“A good book on your shelf is a friend that turns its back on you and remains a friend.” – Unknown

If you’re a mom too, you will love this book. If you aren’t a mom, but have a special mom in your life – I guarantee that she would appreciate receiving a copy of these incredibly sweet book. Motherhood is a beautiful thing, and books like this remind me of what a special job I have as Abby’s mom. If you’d like to learn a little more about the book, you can find Because Your Mommy Loves You on Amazon – get a peek inside at the story, and order a copy to share with your favorite little ones. I love that this book teaches the importance of learning to do things by yourself. I think that is one of our most important roles as mothers – even when they’re little, we’re slowly preparing them for a future where they’ll be on their own. The more self-sufficient we can help them become, the more equipped they’ll be to enter the “real world” someday when they leave our little nest. Ah…. motherhood.

Supporting the Big Dreams of Young Athletes#NikeKids

“I never ran 1000 miles. I could never have done that. I ran one mile 1000 times.” – Stu Mittleman When you think of athletes, you usually think of the celebrities; Tiger Woods, LeBron James, Mia Hamm. But all of those great athletes have something in common – they were youth athletes once too. Nike recognizes this, and with an incredible amount of research behind them, are now the biggest innovators in athletic shoes for the kids who might someday make it big too.

behind the scenes at Nike

“Some men see things as they are and say ‘why’? Others dream things that never were and say ‘why not’?” – George Bernard Shaw

My nephew and I were invited to be part of the first ever Young Athletes Innovation Summit, at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton Oregon. They took us on a behind the scenes tour of what goes into creating their shoes and other athletic gear. I admit, I’m not an athlete. I’m not someone that would be described as sporty. So I didn’t know much at all about athletic shoes, and honestly assumed that they were all pretty much the same. I figured that with a more expensive shoe, you’re probably just paying for the marketing. I could not have been more wrong. After hearing a few presentations, and learning about the incredible amount of research, testing, and ground-breaking technology that goes into every new style of Nike shoe – I was amazed that they are able to sell them at such an affordable price. What they do in their research labs is simply amazing.

Nike Kids Innovation

“Your aspirations are your possibilities.” – Samuel Johnson

Innovation means NOT just shrinking adult shoes, and Nike realizes this. They realize that for kids under the age of 12 – the sky is the limit. They believe that they can do anything, be anything, achieve anything. And Nike wants to encourage kids to get into sports by giving them the best shoes and gear so that they can succeed, and keep that confidence. We sometimes forget that the foot is where it all starts – everything a child does, from even a young age, involves running – first they run around the house, then the playground, then on a sports field. And strong feet mean better balance, more range of motion, and less injuries. So, what is Nike doing to build strong youth athletes?

#NikeKids Nike Free shoes

“Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.” – Dr. Robert Anthony

They’re building the world’s best kids shoes, that’s what! Let me introduce you to the Nike Free – a totally unique new shoe for kids and adults. What makes it different is that it’s incredibly light-weight, and it’s got a super flexible sole. During some of that intense amount of research that Nike does in their labs, they realized that when you train for sports barefoot, your foot gets much stronger. A foot is meant to be bare, right? But – that’s not exactly practical, since stepping on a rock or other sharp objects would pretty much stop anyone’s momentum. So Nike developed the next best thing – The Nike Free. I got a pair myself – in a super fun bright pink – and it is THE. MOST. COMFORTABLE. SHOE. EVER. No exaggeration. I also got them for the rest of the family – and everyone agrees, these shoes rock. No doubt about it.

“May your dreams defy the laws of gravity.” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Nike put together an incredible trip for us – from the amazingly beautiful hotel we stayed in, {see more pics of our trip here} setting up a gorgeous bloggers lounge with ports to charge our phones and laptops, a kids lounge with a Wii, Playstation, AND an XBox, to the gifts to make our stay more comfortable – they thought of every detail. And that isn’t surprising, when you see the amazing attention to detail that goes into every single product that they create. I can know say, without a doubt, that our family are Nike fans for life.

“Sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence.” – George F. Will

This is our group – and it was such an amazing group! I got to meet a few of my very favorite online blogging buddies for the first time in real life, and they were so much fun. I met a few new friends too – and am excited to hopefully see them again, out in the conference world. {BlogHer ’12 perhaps??} And the kids had a total blast hanging out together all day! And I have to give a huge thank you to the crew at Glam Media, and everyone at Nike who put this event together – They made this a seriously unforgettable trip. I learned an incredible amount of information – {Don’t worry, I’ll be sharing more with you soon too!} – while having a blast. We all agree – if we ever decide to change our line of work, Nike will be getting our resumes, lol. The energy, passion for innovation, and positive attitude there was totally contagious. All of these young athletes that attended with us definitely will remember what they learned here for years to come – so watch for some of them in a few years. I bet we see a few pros grow out of this group of athletes!

young athletes need great shoes

“You can if you think you can.” – George Reeves

Let Nike help your young athlete be the best that they can be too – Try the Nike Free. They are seriously a cool looking shoe – we get stopped all the time because people comment on them. And they are the most comfortable shoe that you will ever wear, hands down. Combine that with the fact that you’re giving your child the best support in strengthening their feet, which will lead to better performance on the field, and you just can’t beat the Nike Free.

movie about marines

IF YOU’RE NOT READY TO GIVE UP EVERYTHING, YOU’VE ALREADY LOST

The movie sounds incredible – eight real Navy SEALs have been cast in the lead roles, to ensure that you’re getting a realistic view into what our military faces daily in the fight against terrorism. The plot is centered on a team that is trying to stop a radical jihadist from sending suicide bombers into American stadiums and shopping malls. That really hits home, since that’s the kind of worry that so many of us have had in the back of our minds since 9/11. One of the Amazon reviews was written by a military member who got an advance showing, and says, “It is not a documentary, but it is the most relalitic military movie that I have seen.” I am seriously interested to see this when it comes out, and pre-ordered it today.

Portion of the Proceeds from the ACT OF VALOR Blu-ray and DVD to Benefit Operation Homefront

Operation Homefront provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors. A national nonprofit, Operation Homefront leads more than 4,500 volunteers with a national presence and has met more than 590,000 needs since 2002. A four-star rated charity by watchdog Charity Navigator, nationally, 94 percent of total revenue donated to Operation Homefront goes directly to support service members and their families. For more information about Operation Homefront, please visit www.OperationHomefront.net.

The ACT OF VALOR Blu-ray and DVD arrive June 5th just in time for Father’s Day.

No Running. No Diving. No Lazy Lifeguards….

pool safety infographic

A Cautionary Guide to Summertime Pool Safety

We moved into this house in November of 2010, and it has a big in-ground pool – the first time in my life I’ve ever had a home with a pool like that! It had been neglected for a few years – left open, with no cover, and was pretty gross. There were frogs living in it. And as spring approached, there was a pair of ducks that would come by each afternoon for a swim. We knew it would take some work to get it clean – But we had NO idea how much work it would take! But, after bringing in a pro to drain the whole thing, and start over fresh – it was the best summer we’ve had in years. I love being the gathering place for all of our friends and family – and the kids have a blast.

But – Pools are NOT just fun and games

There is so much danger that goes along with having a pool. Drowning is the #2 cause of accidental death in people ages 5-44 – isn’t that crazy? But, almost all of the dangers can be avoided with some simple pool safety tips, like the ones explained in this super helpful Pool Safety infographic from Doheny.com. Simple steps like keeping the area around the pool clear, having no-running and no-diving rules, and ensuring that there is always an adult to keep a good watch on the kids are totally necessary. Kids are fast, and accidents happen in the blink of an eye.

Summer time, and the livin’ easy…

Summer is almost here. And in some parts of the country – the ones that are warmer than I am here in the Pacific Northwest! – you might already have the pool open for the season. Whether you have a pool, or visit friends who do, just make sure to keep safety tips in mind too, so that all of your good times end safely!

Trucks aren’t just for boys

Toy truck for kids

“Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn’t music.” – William Stafford

My favorite thing about being a mom is watching Abby discover new things. {Well that, and those big hugs around the neck and sloppy kisses. Those rock.} I love being able to give her new toys, and watching the creative ways that she finds to play with them. And… My little girl is a total contradiction – she loves dressing up in mommy’s accessories and shoes, loves pink, loves her baby dolls – but also loves her trucks, and going to watch the race cars with daddy! And, I totally encourage that contradiction, you know? A few months ago I’d bought her a Pink Dump Truck, and she was over the moon. So I was super excited to bring home the Steer-me Steve from MEGA Blocks, and see how she would react…

girls like trucks too

“A little girl is sugar and spice and everything nice – especially when she’s taking a nap.” – Unknown

This is her, playing with Steer-me Steve, in all her gap-toothed, wild haired, crazy outfitted glory. {She insisted on wearing her coat. It has dog shaped pockets. And she loves dogs. She is the boss….} I have quite a few better pics than this, but still – this is my favorite. She is a little silly-bug, and I love it. The brand says, ” Steer-me Steve is perfectly designed for little hands to grip the steer along wheel as they drive through the house picking up the included blocks in the set as his cargo.” And that is the best part of this little guy – She can “drive” him as she pushes him through the house, bringing her favorite things along for the ride. And she usually stops to discover something new along the way, and add it into the truck too, to join her trip through the house…

Steer-me Steve from Mega Blocks

“What is a home without children? Quiet.” – Henny Youngman

This is how Steer-me Steve hangs out at our house – filled with “babies,” just waiting for a chance to go for a cruise. If you have a toddler, you know how much they love filling things up, and then emptying them back out. They also LOVE to transport things from one place to another. So, this toy totally combines their fave things into one adorable toy. Abby will load him with her fastest race cars and drive them all over to her toy track, or she’ll fill it full of dollies to take into the living room for movie and snuggle time. The dump truck empties out super easily at the push of a little lever – simple for little hands, and super fun.

“Having a two-year-old is like having a blender that you don’t have the top for.” – Jerry Seinfeld

If you have kids, then you HAVE to sign up for the MEGA Blocks Family Club. You’ll get sweet updates on new products and promotions, have access to exclusive giveaways that ONLY members can enter {Like the Mother’s Day Giveaway for an iPad going on now!} and more cool stuff.

Want to WIN a Steer-me Steve for your little Discoverer too?

Use the easy peasy Rafflecopter form to get your entries in – you don’t have to complete them all, but the more of them you do, the more chances that you have to win. Kilt: Are you Brave Enough to Wear One?

Kilt: Are you Brave Enough to Wear One?

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. From Disney and Pixar, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition and challenges destiny to change her fate….

Brave Premiers June 22, 2012

Seriously, how funny was that, right?? – “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida – she’s the kings daughter, a skilled archer, and totally independent princess. She’s determined to carve her own path in life – as all bright young ladies should! – and so she totally defies customs and traditions, which of course make some of the ruling powers quite angry. Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. {Isn’t that case with all wishes?? Lol.} The ensuing peril means that Merida has to muster all of her skills and resources, enlist the help of her triplet brothers, {who are clever, yet mischievous, as all brothers are..} and find out just how brave she really is. I love that this story features a girl fighting battles and being brave – awesome role model for little girls to see!

Can’t Wait for the Movie?

If you’re as excited as I am about a new film featuring a strong and independent little girl doing battle with the powers that be – then you’re in luck! I found a few cool things you can get now, and get a taste of the movie before it’s released next month:

  • You can get Brave for the Wii, XBox, Playstation, or Nintendo DS. I ordered this for our Wii – I can’t wait to check it out! Abby likes to try to play with the boys, and I love having a GIRL hero for her to see on the screen!
  • Grab The Brave Soundtrack – you know the songs will be good. Anything from Disney and Pixar is always pretty awesome, and I expect to find a few songs on here that become our new dinner-time dance party favorites. {What? Doesn’t everyone have dinner-time dance parties?}
  • Get some of the kids books – Big Bear, Little Bear is only $3.99, and is perfect for beginning readers. Or get Merida’s Wish for girls 6-9. Or you could even pre-order a copy of The Art of Brave, filled with gorgeous film scenes, for you to enjoy!
