How to go “Design Spotting” with Me & #DysonDesign

Good designs come from the heart, not from the brain.” – Danny Sengers… I want to know – what designs inspire you? Do you notice great design in your daily life? Many times we really don’t – badly designed products are frustrating, don’t do what they should, slow you down – forcing you to take notice of their flaws. But a product that is designed well becomes such a seamless part of your day that you often stop paying much attention to it. I talked to you a few weeks ago about some amazing designs in my life that I did notice, once I took a little time to pay attention to the amazing things around me. Last week, I decided to do a little more “Design Spotting” – and made a point to capture photos of the things I saw that amazed me with their beauty, smart function, and plain ol’ awesomeness. I’d love to see what inspires you too – snap some photos to share to Instagram and Twitter, and tag them with #DysonDesign. I am super excited to see what you find.

clean energy windmills

“Content precedes design. Design in the absense of content is not design, it’s decoration.” – Jeffrey Zeldman

I really do believe that the basis of a great design is a smart idea. I love this photo, and this is definitely a design that is more than mere decoration – this is a structure with a purpose. This is just one of hundreds of windmills that now dot the top of the ridges that you drive through when leaving Washington, headed towards Oregon. Those small dots on the hillside are cows, which helps you realize the magnitude of these giant energy-generating gadgets. It’s very surreal as you drive through them all – they’re beautiful in their simplicity, yet they seem so foreign in this natural landscape. They’re incredibly quiet, even though there is such an incredible amount of them in one place. It’s a very weird feeling as you pass them…. But knowing that these massive windmills are here, in this mostly desolate area, quietly and simply creating energy from the winds that blow by, is pretty amazing.

Design is about making things good (and then better) and right (and fantastic) for the people who use and encounter them.” – Matt Beale

Another amazing example of design that is smart, and beautiful in it’s simplicity is the Dyson Air Multiplier. Have you seen this fan yet? {If not, click through below to check it out.} I’m amazed, and have to admit – I do not really understand how this works. But I am incredibly intrigued, and am looking for somewhere local to check one out in person. I love that the design is like nothing else I’ve ever seen in a fan. I love the “cool” factor it has. And I love the safety of no blades for little fingers to get stuck in. Seriously – this is what I call impressive design.

Epic Creativity from Tim Burton & Disney: #Frankenweenie

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie

Tim Burton is the Master of Epic Creativity

Ok, now I know that Tim Burton movies are a little different, and they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. But for us – they are some of our most-loved family movies. From my childhood favorite that’s been upgraded to 3D – The Nightmare Before Christmas, to me and Abby’s favorite story to watch together on a rainy day –  Coraline – Tim Burton makes the most unique, interesting, and totally imaginative films you’ll watch as a family. Love them. So – it’s no surprise that I’m pretty darn excited to hear about the new one coming out this fall – Frankenweenie!

About Frankenweenie from Tim Burton

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” was filmed in black and white and then rendered in 3D. The talented voice cast includes: Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder. Presented by Disney, “Frankenweenie” is directed by Tim Burton, and releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012.

Fun Frankenweenie Facts:

  • “Frankenweenie” is the first animated film that Tim Burton has directed for Disney.
  • When Tim Burton originally conceived the idea for “Frankenweenie,” he envisioned it as a full-length, stop-motion animated film. Due to budget constraints, he instead directed it as a live-action short, released in 1984.
  • Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film; there were 17 Victors and 12 Sparkys. Since each animator worked independently on different scenes, multiples were needed. They also needed backup in case a puppet required repair.
  • Incredibly talented artists were able to take Tim Burton’s original drawings and sculpt them into three-dimensional sculptures, which were then cast in a combination of silicone and latex. Their costumes are all sewn with miniature stitches to keep in scale. Wigs are made for them from real human hair and then applied strand by strand so that the puppets have a more realistic hairline. Inside each puppet there is a metal armature, which acts like a skeleton and gives the animator the ability to move the puppets and act out the scenes with incredible subtlety and finesse.
  • The sets for the film were built on tabletops. The vast majority of the miniature props for the sets were made by hand and hand-painted and detailed.

Mark your calendar: Frankenweenie releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012!

Follow Frankenweenie on Facebook, and check out Disney Pictures on Twitter for updates on other fun new family flicks! The best movies come from Disney – watch for the new animated film featuring a princess as the main hero {so cool!} – Disney*Pixar’s Brave releases soon too!

Family Summer Discount Guide ’12

Summer Discount Guide ’12 – Managing spending when you have young children can be a major struggle. When summer arrives and the kids are bored, finding something affordable for them to do is essential to a parent’s sanity. The great thing is that businesses are prepared. They prime the pump with sales for summer. Some of these are offers that must be purchased ahead of time, for which a low interest rate credit card comes in handy. Others are ideas for things to do at home. Here are the three best summer savings offers or ideas we can find:

discount summer fun

Season passes and discount tickets

Entertainment venues know how to bring out the crowds. The secret behind their passes plan is that, by lowering the cost at the door, the customer is likely to spend more money inside the park. The important thing to remember is managing spending is very important when you’re going to the park more than once with season passes. Frozen oranges and frozen bottled water can be thawing for later use where they’re hidden in your handbag. They’re healthier and cheaper than fast food. It’s also a good idea, well before your park visit, to stock up on plushies at thrift stores for when the kids start begging. Stow the toys with your frozen oranges and bring them out at strategic times.

Bring the neighborhood

Okay, maybe not the whole neighborhood. Maybe you can bring just your nieces and nephews, or the neighbor’s kids. Summer oriented venues, such as water parks, often have spectacular multi-person deals. When you bring in enough people, you can often barter with the venue for extra goodies, like discounts on lunch or bonus tickets. Keep in mind, especially if you live in a place with more than one such venue, you can pit them against each other in a competition for your money. Once you seal the deal, tamp it down with your low interest rate credit card. Get them to fax or email you the deal in writing too.

Outdoor movies

Many of us older people remember our summer nights at the drive-in. A similar experience can be created for young ones with outside blow-up movie screens. The screens are now affordable. Some can even be rented. You already have a ton of movies to play. More are available from friends. Pop some popcorn and breakout the cold store-brand soda on ice. Summer still means fun.

Summer doesn’t have to put your bank account in the red.  In addition to the aforementioned, there are plenty of ways to have fun on a budget.  It simply takes a bit of creativity on your part.

What are your best summertime savings tips?

What Inspires You? Design Spotting with #DysonDesign

“Everything is designed. Few things are designed well.” – Brian Reed… What designs inspire you? There is beauty all around us, every day, in the simplest places – if we only take a moment to break from the rush and fuss of daily life to stop and notice it. From the new poppies blooming in my backyard in the summer sunshine, to the great texture in my old metal spinning star that reflects the light onto the patio in cool patterns each evening – there are little spots of beautiful design in many of the everyday objects in our lives.

Instagram Stars Photo

“The only important thing about design is how it relates to people.” – Victor Papanek

This is one of my favorite store windows ever. I love the way the colors look so vibrant, the light reflects on the glass, and even the texture of the carousels of greeting cards for sale inside the store, behind the lighting display. This was inside of the SeaTac aiport in Seattle, when we were on our way to the Nike Kids event last month. I just had to stop and capture it – and it makes me smile again every time that I see it. I love finding little spots of great design like this.

Instagram starry rain

“Design is in everything we make, but it’s also between those things. It’s a mix of craft, science, storytelling, propaganda, and philosophy.” – Erik Adigard

The above photo is a great design that someone purposely put together – but this one is beautiful due to a random set of circumstances. First – I have no idea if these steps once were useful, or connected to something, or if they were placed here as a joke, but they are just free-standing steps we came across one day in downtown Seattle. It was raining {as usual} and the bit of a breeze had blown these tiny petals off of the flowered trees across the street onto the sidewalk here. I love the way they catch the light, and make it look as though little stars have sprinkled down out of the sky along with the rain. So pretty.

Great design can inspire great things – from the beauty in your own back yard to the simplicity of a great product, get inspired with #DysonDesign

“Great design will not sell an inferior product, but it will enable a great product to achieve its maximum potential.” – Thomas J. Watson Jr.

A well-designed product that you use daily helps bring a little bit of beauty into your day, and simplicity into your routines. And a wonderful example of a beautifully designed product is the Dyson Air Multiplier – Smart, simple, and super impressive. I am incredibly impressed with the innovation behind this new fan…

Peppa Pig & Nick Jr. Make Learning Fun!

Peppa Pig

Peppa Pig – Fun New Addition to the Nick Jr. Line Up!

Have you had a chance to check out this new kids show on Nick Jr. yet? It’s called Peppa Pig, and Abby is totally in love with it! I don’t let her watch a ton of cartoons, and I know that toddlers shouldn’t have too much TV time. But honestly – as a work at home mom, there are times when letting her play with blocks while she giggles away at a fun show on television is the only way that I’m going to get some work done. And, when the shows are helping to reinforce the letters, numbers, animals, colors and other things that I’m teaching her with our flashcards and books, then I think that they’re an ok addition to her day. We have a few favorites: the Baby Signing Time DVD’s have helped Abby and I learn over 100 signs over the past year. Dora gets Abby moving around, and burning off some of that wild toddler energy, as she does “Arms up!” or “Climb! Climb! Climb the ladder with me!” – and it’s so fun to watch her act out the motions. And, Peppa Pig is now a new favorite of ours… Abby thinks the little snorting pig sounds are just about the funniest thing she’s ever seen. Check out a peek….

Peppa Pig Teaches the Alphabet

Yes, it’s silly. But seriously – Abby just can’t get enough of those little piggies! If you want to tune in too, you can catch Peppa Pig on Nick Jr., or watch more episodes right now online. And make sure to follow Nick Jr. on Facebook and Twitter – for fun updates on new shows, giveaways, and promotions!

{Disclaimer: I was compensated with a complimentary DVD copy of Peppa Pig from Child’s Play Communication, so that I could watch them with my family and give you some honest feedback. Free swag never sways me – all opinions are 100% my own. I only endorse what I love – We love this show, and think you will too!}
