Simple DIY Unicorn Party Ideas

Hi, my name is Meagan, and I like to party. {Has anyone else ever seen Hot Rod? Such an underated, super silly-funny film.} I love to entertain – huge, formal holiday gatherings, birthday pool parties, impromptu backyard BBQs, or simple “just because” celebrations, to brighten up boring days. I’m big on embracing the silly, creating your own happy, celebrating small joys. A few favorites we’ve had:

I love creative, personalized celebrations. I’m also a busy momma, and on a tight budget. So, I use inexpensive store-bought goodies, jazz them up with a bit of clever DIY, and BAM! – Fun themed parties that are easy peasy to create and keep my wallet happy. Know what the secret is to most of those? Walmart. Yeppers. Almost all of my parties start at my local Walmart.

Simple DIY Unicorn Party Ideas on a Budget

I live a little bit outside of town, so Walmart is the closest place for me to shop. I love the low prices, LOVE the new Savings Catcher app for cash back, and love that I can easily grab everything I need to make a fun day for the kiddos – new shirt, snacks, craft supplies, toys and games, bakery goodies, party supplies – in one spot, while I’m there picking up my usual groceries and toilet paper. {Always and forever, the toilet paper. This kid…} This week, Abby and I needed a pick me up. We both love sparkly things, and unicorns, and rainbows… so I put a few extra fun supplies on my weekly list, to craft up a festive Unicorn Party play day.

I have to admit – I was a little bummed on this trip. Some of the uh-MAY-zingly cute unicorn party supplies they’d had before were out of stock, as they were prepping for inventory. You can find them all on my All The Unicorns Pinterest board though, and pick them up at your local store. {This isn’t going to be our only unicorn shindig, so I’ll be getting myself more of these goodies next time :)}

Cupcakes to decorate

We shop the Walmart bakery regularly, but recently remembered how much we LOVE their cupcakes during their free cupcake day – did you see that? So fun. I love that Walmart always has cool samples and events going on. On this trip, I bought a couple boxes of their French Vanilla frosted gourmet cupcakes. They’re the perfect basic cupcake, then you can add extra sprinkles or toppers to personalize them for your party.

I added some magical rainbow unicorn sprinkles, put them on cute little colored-paper doilies, and they’re perfect for our unicorn party day. Because what’s a party without cupcakes? Abby said they were “faaaaaancy.”

DIY Unicorn party plates

Since they didn’t have unicorn themed plates, I used my go-to basic Walmart paper party plates. They’re only a couple bucks a pack, so I grabbed a few in colors to match our party, Abby’s favorites – Purple, pink, and turquoise. Then I took a few minutes to make them into simple unicorn plates – used a hole punch to make a few holes, then threaded ribbon through for a mane. Then I cut out a piece of glitter foam to make the horn at the front. And, all of those supplies are also available at… Yep, Walmart!

Then to jazz up the basic silverware a bit too, I added some glittery washi tape to each handle, with polka dots to match the other paper plates and napkins that I’d picked up at Walmart. Only took a minute, and adds a fun, festive touch that the kids loved. This is an easy way to add some jazz to any party theme!

DIY Unicorn Party Headband

And, a unicorn party wouldn’t be complete without unicorn horn headbands! Watch this week for the full tutorial on how to put them together – it’s soooo simple, pinky promise. And I’ll show you a few different ways to customize them with different styles and decorations. They were really inexpensive to create – I picked up a handful of embellishments, felt, ribbons {have you seen the character ribbons Walmart has right now? Super cute!} and some cheap basic headbands. Then all you need is a hot glue gun, and some happy helpers, and you’ve got sparkly party accessories. :)

You can see, Abby definitely liked hers. She’s also wearing a fun unicorn BFF necklace – I grabbed those in the girl’s jewelry section, as party favors for everyone. Because, you can seriously get everything.on.your.list. and more, at Walmart. Make it your first stop next time you’re planning a party, big or small!

I set up this little goodie table as a surprise in the playroom, for Abby and her friends to find after school yesterday. Each girl got a cute unicorn gift bag, with the necklace, unicorn water bottle, and room to fill it up with a selection of rainbow colored candies and treats. It only took me about an hour to set it up, was really inexpensive, and the girls had a blast crafting up their headbands while eating cupcakes and singing Taylor Swift songs all afternoon. A great way to boost our moods!

Walmart has everything you need for EVERY spring party – they have tons of great themes to choose from like Beauty and the Beast, Disney Cars, Lego Batman, basic Happy Birthday, and more. They have the best value for the rest of your party needs too, like paper products, crepe paper and banners, snacks, cakes and cupcakes, gifts and toys, even new outfits to match the party theme.

Let’s chat: What spring events are YOU celebrating?? And what are some of your best tips for creating really fun parties on a budget?

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Walmart. The opinions and text are all mine.

      Thank you – they ARE! I usually bake my own. But when I don’t have time, or just need a few, these from the Walmart bakery are my go-to. They’re delish, and are super easy to jazz up with sprinkles, candy pieces, chocolate drizzle, etc – to match any party theme. :)
