Nutrisystem Week 3 – Getting Closer! #NSNation

nutrisystem, nsnation

“If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.” – Jack Dixon

This quote is posted on my fridge. It’s to remind me NOT to think too much about results yet. Losing weight can be so difficult – and when I think about trying to lose 40-50 pounds – Holy heck, that feels so overwhelming! But, I try to remember – every goal is reached in small steps. So each day I focus on making good choices, and changing more of my bad habits. And I am SO proud of myself already, because I’ve made some awesome changes!

How About Results??

I know, I know – What you guys all really want to know is, “How much have you lost so far??!!” I know this, because it’s what my friends and family keep asking too. But, I’m sorry to disappoint you – I don’t have a number to give you yet. I did weigh myself when I started – But our old scale is really unreliable. After a ton of research online, and asking friends for suggestions – I just ordered the EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale. It definitely seems like the best one in my price range. That way, I’ll be able to truly track my progress. But – here’s the good news… Our old unreliable scale weighs me differently 4 times in a row. BUT – it’s now weighing me at lower numbers than I’ve ever gotten before. That’s VERY encouraging and motivating!

Almost the One-Month Mark

Next Sunday will mark my one-month mark on the Nutrisystem program. So, this weekend I’ll have my new scale, to finally get firm numbers of what I truly weigh. AND – I’m going to retake all of my measurements. Since I took a very full set of body measurements before I started, and logged them all in my personal Nutrisystem online journal system – I am incredibly excited to see what kind of results I’ve gotten!! Watch for the big reveal this Sunday night….

Until then, remember…. “You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.” – Jim Rohn

Gettin’ Back in the Skinny Jeans #DigestiveCare

In addition to the big set of ambitious goals that I set for my blog and business life this year – {Remember my list of 10 goals, including “Be More Awesome?”} I also made a more private list of personal improvement goals. Not the generic, “Lose weight, be more active, get healthier” type of goals, but a list with very detailed steps to take to get back into the great shape I used to be in. You know, in my old life. Before I had a baby…. {You can’t keep blaming the fact that you’re favorite jeans don’t fit on “baby weight” when your baby becomes a toddler…}

Healthy living

“Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.” – Doug Larson

I have always been a pretty healthy eater, but I’ve picked up some bad habits now that my nephews live with me, and we have more snack foods in the house. Plus, with my Mister, and my brother both making dinner a few nights a week… Well, let’s just say they’re not exactly into cooking light, lol. When I pulled my box of pre-baby jeans out of the garage, and realized that my old favorites STILL don’t fit – I knew it was time to get down to business. I’d been so busy over the past year – I had a baby, had family move in, earned my degree, and started this site – I hadn’t even realized that I wasn’t taking good care of myself. It was time for that to change!

Joovy Tricycoo

“In order to change we must be sick and tired of being sick and tired.” – Author Unknown

To reach your goals, you have to break them down into small steps. Since my goal is to get back into shape – a shape that will fit into those awesome jeans again – here are some of the smaller goals I’ve been working on:

  1. Get more active. Abby got the coolest new trike – the Tricycoo from Joovy a few months ago. It’s such a fun way for her and I to go out for walks around the neighborhood – and she has so much fun looking and pointing and giggling, that she’s actually ready for a nap when we get home each afternoon.
  2. Eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies each day. This surprised me – I felt like I was eating pretty good foods. But when you track your habits, most of us are not getting enough produce!
  3. Find a diet plan that works. I recently started the Nutrisystem diet. I love it. I’ll be sharing more about it with you guys really soon – But it’s such an easy solution for me. The food portions are prepackaged, so it’s simple to follow. And it’s re-training my brain on what an appropriate portion size looks like.
  4. Add some healthy supplements. I take a Multivitamin, fish oil tablets – and just added in a 4X Pro-B tablet each morning too. I  have suffered from IBS for years, and while some changes to my diet, and doing my best to reduce stress, have helped – My doctor has been recommending that I add a probiotic to my diet too. This is a great choice if you’re looking to improve your digestive health too.

These changes combined are already making me feel SO much better. {Can you believe that since it’s march, we’re almost 1/4 of the way into the year? Wow, right?}

4X Pro-B

“If I’d known I was going to live so long, I’d have taken better care of myself.” – Leon Eldred

I used to skip breakfast – But now that I’m on the Nutrisystem diet, I have a protein shake and my breakfast choice each morning. That’s when I take my 4X Pro-B tablet too. I’ve been taking it for a couple of weeks now, and can honestly tell a difference. Nothing drastic – but it does help me feel, well, lighter. I’d been suffering from some really bad tummy troubles with my IBS over the past couple months, and they do seem to be getting better. I can’t wait to see how I feel after I finish the 2 month supply I ordered from Costco.com.

Costco.com

“When it comes to eating right and exercising, there is no “I’ll start tomorrow.”  Tomorrow is disease.” – Terri Guillemets

You might be wondering – “Ok, what in the heck IS a probiotic??” They’re bacteria that help maintain a healthy digestive system, and they help improve your immune system. You’ll find them in certain yogurts, and other foods – but getting them in tablet form is the best way to get a consistent daily dose. You need to have good bacteria in your digestive system, but as we get older, there are less of these good guys in your system. And things like diet, stress, and other lifestyle factors can cause your bacteria levels to get off balance. According to Costco.com, the 4X Pro-B “patent pending caplet technology protects delicate probiotics from stomach acid, ” making them one of the best options available.

Big Star Jeans

“You get whatever you settle for.” – Unknown

I have settled for less than the best for quite some time now. I have already seen some great changes – getting out and being active each afternoon with Abby gives me a bigger boost of energy than the cup of coffee I used to have. Eating more fruits and veggies makes me feel SO much better than grabbing some chips or a cookie. The Nutrisystem program is rockin’ for me, and adding in the 4 X Pro-B tablets is just another step towards success. By the middle of the year – Hopefully I will be writing another blog post with a picture of me IN those skinny jeans up there!! Those babies are the goal – and I WILL reach it.

Tips & Tools for Better Brushing – Win the Twooth Timer!

Brushing Toddler Teeth

“You don’t have to brush your teeth – just the ones you want to keep.” – Author Unknown

I’m pretty lucky – Abby LOVES brushing her teeth. She sneaks into all of the bathrooms in the house to steal people’s toothbrushes, and then proudly comes to show us as she brushes her “teef” with our own brush. While I don’t appreciate the expense of constantly buying new toothbrushes for everyone, I do totally appreciate that she is off to a great start in keeping those tiny toddler teeth healthy. But while she can’t wait to brush each morning and night – The boys in my house used to be the total opposite! Like every mom, I try to avoid fighting, nagging, whining, or complaining in my house – so when we have a challenge, I try to come up with a solution to make the task fun. And that’s where the Twooth Timer comes to the rescue!

Twooth Timer

“Using Twooth Timer twice a day, Helps your kids fight tooth decay!”

The Twooth Timer is exactly what it sounds like it would be – A super fun timer to encourage your kids to brush their teeth longer. Experts recommend brushing for at least 2 minutes – but the average kiddo only brushes for around 30 seconds – Yikes! And, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood ailment – 5 times more common even than asthma. Clearly, we could all use a few tools to help kids do a better job in brushing, right?

Tips and Tools for Better Brushing

We used to have quite a bit of trouble with oral health care in this house – The boys {5 and 8 years old} went to their yearly check-ups last year, and both had quite a few cavities. They never wanted to brush their teeth – I had to remind them a million times each morning and night, and couldn’t seem to get them to add it to their regular routine on their own. But, we got a little more creative, and at their last check-up they both got a big thumbs up for no new cavities! I’ll share a few of the tips and tools that work best for our family –

  • Use a reminder – We have a big white board in the hall that lists each thing that the kids need to do in the morning before school, and then again in the evening before bed. They get to check off each day that they complete everything – and 5 check marks during the week gets them a fun reward on the weekend! Sure, it’s a bit of bribery, but it’s worked wonders in keeping them on task.
  • Get fun supplies – Let the kids help you shop for brushing supplies. They’ll be much more excited to brush with a cool super hero toothbrush that they choose themselves. Get a fun toothpaste – We use the Xlear Spry Tooth Gel in Strawberry Banana – And try those cool character-themed floss picks too. There are a lot of fun choices you can check out – They might cost a little more than a store brand product, but if they can save you money on dentist bills, they’re well worth it!
  • Get the Twooth Timer! – When it’s time to brush, the kids simply turn the timer to the big number 2, and get to brushing. At our house, they like to “race” – They brush as fast as they can for the full two minutes, making sure that they get every single tooth before the timer goes off. I love that they can go brush their teeth on their own, and I know that they’ll do a great job, since they always brush until the Twooth Timer tells them to stop. They think it’s super fun – I think it’s super effective!

Caregiver for Your Parents? This Tip Can Save a Life!

Prescription Pills

Are you a caregiver?

It’s hard for me to accept sometimes that my parents are getting older. I still picture them like they were when I was a kid. Plus, if THEY’RE getting older, that means I am too, which I have been having a hard time with since I turned 30. When the heck did I turn into an adult?? But – As our parents get older, you start thinking about how you’ll take care of them as they age. What if something happens to them? What if they get sick? Usually it falls to us, the daughters, to be the caregivers.

My Parents

My mom is still mostly healthy – She’s super active, works at a pretty physical job, is an amazing gardener, loves to dance. And her and I live together, which means I know she’s taken care of. But my father has had a lot of health problems. He broke his hip a year ago, and still has a lot of trouble getting around. He also recently moved to Seattle, on the other side of the state, so my brothers and I can’t stop in to check on him like we used to. I worry about him a lot, and hate that he’s so far away.

Help in an Emergency

We had gotten him set up with a medical emergency reporting system when we first moved him to his new house – Just in case. Like I said, he has a hard time getting around, and is known to fall and have a tough time getting to the phone. He thought it was a silly idea, and didn’t want to get it – I explained to him that it wasn’t even for HIM, it was for me, so I wouldn’t worry quite as much. All I can say is THANK GOODNESS he agreed – Two weeks ago he got incredibly sick. So sick he couldn’t get out of bed, couldn’t call anyone. But – his Medical Alert system is right next to the bed, so he was able to get an ambulance. He ended up needing emergency surgery. The surgeon said that the doctor he had here in town had missed some major problems for over a year now – if he hadn’t had this surgery, he could have died!

Protect Your Family

I am now such a big believer in these medical alert systems, and recommend them to anyone who has an older family member, friend, or loved one that has trouble getting around. It gives you piece of mind, and it can be a lifesaver for them. There are a ton of options out there to check out, and the cost is really not at all as high as I had expected.

What do you think?

Have you ever used any type of Medical Alert for your family? Do you have a close call story like this too? Share your stories or advice in the comments, to help others who are reading this find the best solution for their families too.

What You Can Do To Help Protect Infants Now

Meningococcal, Meningitis, Infants, Disease, Vaccinations

Protect Infants Now from Meningococcal Meningitis

When I was approached by Mom Central about participating in this campaign, I of course gave an enthusiastic YES right away. Any time that I can use my voice her on my site to help spread the word about important causes, I jump at the opportunity to help. I have heard about Meningitis, and knew that it was a dangerous disease for babies – But I had thought that this was something all babies are vaccinated against regularly. I was shocked to learn more about what a devastating disease this is, and that the CDC does not currently require this to be a part of routine care for babies.

Leading Cause of Preventable Infant Death in the US

I had NO idea that, after neonatal complications and accidental injuries, this disease is one of the leading causes of death in infants. Very scary. One out of every 16 babies who contract this disease will die from it, and among the survivors, one in five will suffer seizures, blindness, amputation, paralysis or learning disabilities. I had no idea. The worst part? Over 50% of these deaths could have been prevented if the baby had been vaccinated. Right now, the CDC is trying to decide whether to recommend that all children ages 2 and under be vaccinated against this disease. Keep reading to see how you can help influence this decision.

Saving Babies Lives, Better Vaccinations

Are you crying by now too?

This absolutely breaks my heart, and I cannot even imagine how life goes on when such a devastating loss happens in your life. I can’t imagine ever going through something like that, and I will do my part to ensure that no other mother has to endure that either. If you’d like to join us, learn more about how you can help…

Simple Routine to Brighten Your Family’s Smiles!

Tooth Brushing for Toddlers

Listerine Oral Care Challenge

Oral health is one of those things that you don’t think about a whole lot – Until there’s a problem. Things like cavities, and fillings, and gum disease are not just super painful, they can also be super expensive! I’m always looking for new “Solutions” – products, services, sites, and systems to simplify life, and make things better. When I heard about the Listerine Oral Care Challenge – it definitely sounded like something I wanted to check out!

How it works

The idea behind the challenge is simple – Start a routine of brushing, flossing, and rinsing twice a day for three weeks, and involve the whole family. Sounds easy enough, right? But once we committed to this, and started tracking it on the family calendar, I realized how often we used to skip a step or two. But this routine really is so simple, and so effective, that it’s a great addition to every families schedule!

Toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash

Awesome Products Make it Fun

To build some excitement for this challenge from Listerine, we were sent a big box of cool products – And with characters like Batman, Phineas and Ferb, and Barbie, these were a huge hit with the kids! {My favorite product? The Total Care Whitening Floss – totally different than any other floss I’ve ever tried. Super cool} So, armed with new brushes, fun rinse products, new floss, and great attitudes – We started the challenge 3 weeks ago. I’m happy to report that it was a total success!

Brighten Your Family’s Smiles!

Abby is almost 18 months, and her little teeth are filling it fast. She LOVES brushing her teeth – and as you can see in the picture above, she will steal any toothbrush she finds in the house, and wander around brushing!! We just upgraded her from her Baby Banana Toothbrush, to a new “Big Girl” Barbie toothbrush from Reach. She loves it – and I love that she makes it so easy to brush those little teeth! The boys thought it was super cool to use the Smart Rinse Mouthwash – since it actually tints the particles and germs in your mouth, so you see “proof” of it working in the sink after rinsing. And I’m happy that this challenge made brushing, flossing, and rinsing into a FUN new habit for us all!

Take the Challenge with Your Family

Learn More about Listerine Products – and get some fun coupons too!

Use those products to brush, floss, and rinse twice a day for three weeks – It’s that easy!

{I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Listerine and received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.}
