Tall & Skinny? Hot & Sweet? 50 Shades – Pick Yours….

Ok ladies, I’m guessing that all of you have by now heard of the guilty pleasure on women’s night stands across the country – Fifty Shades of Grey. Just in case you’ve been hiding out in a mountain cave for the past few months, and haven’t heard of it – it’s a trilogy of books, featuring some rather racy content that women have made into a crazy-popular brand. Well, there’s also another set of “shades” to take a look at, that are just as hot and steamy as your favorite books….

Travel Event: Complimentary Stay at Country Inn and Suite – #Giveaway US & Canada

Fall is the perfect time to get away- great weather, not too hot or buggy, the beautiful fall foliage, and fall foods are some of my personal favorites. I love long weekends this time of year, and highly recommend grabbing the spouse and kids, hitting the road, and finding an interesting destination. One thing you never want to worry about when you travel, is the sort of hotel you will wind up staying in. It can be hard to book online- so many places “fluff” the reviews by having friends and family members post positive ones, and people generally only post ratings on hotels if they loved it or truly hated it. Sometimes I read them and am amazed at the crazy things people will write about.

It can sometimes be simpler to stick with a hotel brand that you know, like Country Inn and Suites. I would venture to say that no matter where you plan to stay, there will be a location nearby (even out of the USA, they have quite a presence). More then once, I have ended up in a hotel that was pretty “rough”, had beds that looked like they had never been deep [Read more…]

Here’s Your Chance to be a Superhero…

“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” – William James... Giving back to others in the world around me is something that I am very passionate about. Growing up in poverty, I know what it’s like to not have enough. Luckily, I grew up in the United States, where we have programs to help mothers who are raising children – programs that act as a safety net if you lose your job, someone gets sick, or an emergency happens. Children in countries around the world aren’t always so lucky.

Your life is your message to the world. Make sure it's inspiring.Especially after becoming a mother, the struggles that other families must go through, just to provide the most basic of essentials to survive – well, it just tugs at my heart in a whole new place. When I talk about charities that I support, I often get asked why I would want to send money to mothers and children in other countries, when we have starving kids right here in America. Here’s what I wish more people would realize – we THROW AWAY more food in this country than some other areas even have available at all. No children in America starve to death, unless they are a victim of abuse. Imagine it – You’re homeless, with not a penny to your name, and a baby to feed. You’ll visit a food bank, the Salvation Army, a soup kitchen. If your child was near death from lack of food – they’d be saved at a hospital, without you needing money up front.

Now imagine that there are no resources available.

That your neighbors have no food either. There are places in the world where children actually die from lack of food, water, or medicine. That is NOT something that a mother in this country, not matter how poor, will ever have to face. Which is why I support some wonderful charities here in my town that are a tremendous help to local families in need – but I also passionately support families across the globe who are in even more desperate need than I’ll ever be able to understand, living life here in the US.

WFP: World Food Programme in BoliviaI realize that not everyone feels that they have many resources to help when it comes to big issues such as poverty. But there are always ways that you can help – big or small. One amazing group that is working towards ensuring that children don’t go hungry is the World Food Programme. Currently, I’m working to support their program in Bolivia:

Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in Latin America: of its 9.5 million population, two thirds overall – 80 percent in rural areas – live below the poverty line.

This is a poor nation, where the majority of their income – and food – comes from agriculture. But frequent natural disasters make agriculture an unreliable source of income, leading to a serious amount of children growing up malnourished. The WFP is striving to get these children basic nutrition so that they can grow up healthier, so that they can go to school instead of working, so that they are fed enough to even be able to concentrate while in classes, and to enhance emergency preparedness and response capacity in their country, to minimize the impact of future disasters. These kids are the future of their country – the more we help them grow up strong and successful, the brighter the future for their families.

What can you do to help?

Get to know these kids! Watch the video below, click the graphic above, or visit them online – You can ask a question for the children in Bolivia that will be translated and delivered by Ximena, WFP’s Communications Officer there. Let them know you’re listening, you care, and that you want to help!

If you want to do more, there are so many resources on the World Food Programme’s website that you can check out, that make it truly simple for every single one of us to help out:

Make sure to take a minute to take some of these small actions – they might seem small to you, but they’ll have a huge impact on families who are in dire need of your help. As moms, we should do all that we can to help make sure that no other mother, anywhere in the world, has to watch her children go hungry…. So make sure to share this info with your friends and family too.

“We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.” – Marian Wright Edelman

Tips for Trick or Treating with Toddlers

Spooky Graveyard sign for Halloween

Eat, drink, and be scary….

I love holidays. All of ’em. Yes, I have a whole long wall in our shop that is lined with floor to ceiling shelves filled with big plastic tote boxes of holiday decorations, baking pans, serving dishes, and fun stuff. {They’re color coded by holiday, so that they’re easy to find.} Yes, the Mister of the house thinks I’m crazy. But yes, we have a lot of fun! And one of my favorite holidays is Halloween – we decorate the yard super spooky for all of the Trick or Treaters in the neighborhood, I put up a ton of ghosts and pumpkins inside the house, and I love coming up with fun new ideas for treats, activities, crafts, and decor – the bigger Abby gets, the more fun it is to create holiday magic with her.

Toddler pink puppy Halloween costume

Trick or Treat, be real sweet, give us tasty treats to eat!

This was Abby’s costume last year – she was the cutest little pink poodle I’ve ever seen. This year she has two costumes – an adorable ladybug outfit with sparkly red wings, and a LaLaLoopsy princess style poofy dress that is totally fun. We have 4 Halloween parties, plus trick or treating on the big day, so I wanted her to have more than one outfit to make it all a little bit more fun. She just turned two in July, so she’s still a bit too little to go for a full night or trick or treating with her big-boy cousins. But I definitely want her to experience the fun of it all. So what we’re doing again this year, just like last, is to go out early while it’s still light to walk around door-to-door in our little cul-de-sac, where it’s safe. Then we’ll head to the church down the road for their big Trunk or Treat event. If you have little ones, I totally recommend finding one of these in your area – you don’t have to be a member of the church, it’s a fun, festive atmosphere where they go trunk to trunk around the parking lot to get candy. Each station is decorated up, it’s super safe since we’re not walking along dark roads, and it’s a lot less ground for little toddler legs to cover. For the next few years, I think this is the way we’ll let Abby go trick or treating.

Hershey Candy for Trick or Treaters

When witches go riding and black cats are seen, The moon laughs and whispers, Tis near Halloweeen.

After the Trunk or Treat, we head back to the house for the rest of the night, so we can hand out candy to all of the neighbor kids. Abby LOVES to see all of the other kids in their costumes, so this is another great way to let her share in the trick or treating fun, without having her out in the cold and getting too tired. We fill up our big plastic cauldron with everyone’s favorite candies from HERSHEY’S, and spend a couple of hours answering the door. It’s a nice way to get a quick chat in with the neighbors we don’t talk to often enough too.

Spooky HERSHEY’S Peanut Butter Cup Cookies

On Halloween night, after we’ve visited the neighbor houses, and then gotten our candy fix at the Trunk or Treat, and once we’ve run out of candy to hand out – we turn off the porch light, and settle in for family night. We make dinner and some treats, and snuggle up on the couch to watch semi-spooky movies with Abby. She loves Nightmare Before Christmas, Ghostbusters, and or course, It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown! It’s a great way to wind down after the excitement of the day. This recipe is one of my favorites, and it’s a great way to use up leftover candy. You melt down some chocolate HERSHEY’S bars to coat your crackers with, melt a REECE’S cup in between the crackers, then stick your pretzel legs in between. Super simple, and so much fun. Get the directions here: Spooky HERSHEY’S Spider Cookies. They’re a perfect mix – chocolate and peanut butter, sweet and salty, spooky and cute. You’re kids will love them!
