How to DIY Kids Fashions – Even if you’re not the crafty type

“You know your children are growing up when they stop asking you where they came from and refuse to tell you where they’re going.” – P. J. O’Rourke… Kids grow. And they grow quick. Which means that every time I go to get Abby dressed in the morning, I swear to you that she’s outgrow her clothes overnight. So I’ve found a super smart – and super stylish! – solution to this challenge – Buti-Bag makes it simple to DIY your kiddos outgrown clothes into new fashions that they can wear again. It’s an affordable solution that’s simple and so cute. Keep reading to see how it works, and how it can solve more than one type of kids clothing challenge.

How to DIY Kids Fashions with Buti-Bag

How to DIY Kids Fashions – Even if you’re not the crafty type

You might remember the Buti-Bag brand from another smart solution that I shared with you guys a couple of months ago. The Bunvelope is a totally modern diaper and wipes holder, that easily transitions to life after baby as a cosmetics bag for you. One of my fave pieces of baby gear. She’s got other super smart products too – All totally chic, designed by a real mom who understands what we really need in our gear, and all made right here in the US. Today, I’ll show you more about the Belle Bottoms, a totally genius idea. These super cute iron-on designs can be used in so many ways –

  • When you did your back to school review of the kids clothes, I’m sure that a ton of you mommas learned that while your kiddo’s pants still fit on the waist, they’ve grown a ton since last fall, and most of them are now too short. You hate to throw out pants that are in good shape, right? Adding Belle Bottoms is a great way to add some extra length!
  • How about the pants that still fit, but are frayed and worn around the bottoms? Yep, this is a great way to cover up that mess.
  • Maybe you’ve got the opposite problem, like I do – Abby {my 2 year old} is a chunker. She needs a 4 or 5T pair of jeans to fit around her booty {she got that from me, poor girl…} – but then they are WAY too long. So, I can just cut off all of that excess fabric, and finish them again with the Belle Bottoms. Problem solved.
  • These are also a way to just up the fun factor of any kids wardrobe. If you’ve got girls who are bored with yesterdays styles, let them pick out a couple prints of Belle Bottoms to jazz up what they’ve got. Saves a ton versus buying new clothes!
  • And… These can fit a ton of different sizes of pants – Including yours. They can be added to most straight leg style denim, and would be really fun on a pair of capris. They’re available in a ton of different prints, and either flat style or ruffled. Love ’em.

So – Ready to see how these work? You can find the full instructions on the Buti-Bag site – Instructions for flat iron-on Belle Bottoms. And I’ll walk you through a quick tutorial on how to add them to any pair of pants, easy peasy.

Enhance Your Pants – DIY Kids Pants Tutorial

When I first got my Belle Bottoms, I admit – I was a little nervous to put them on. You do have to carefully read the instructions, and follow them well, since once you iron these cuties on – they are permanent. But, after reading through the whole instructions twice, to make sure I had it all down – It was super simple to apply ’em. Pinky promise.

  1. Gather your supplies all together in one spot – Belle Bottoms, kids pants to makeover, scissors, a pencil, and an iron. Then, either use a seam ripper to open up the seam on the bottom of each pant leg {great if you need to maximize the length} or just cut off that bulky bottom hem.
  2. Three edges of each piece of fabric have adhesive strips – you pull off the piece on the short end. Then you take the flat Belle Bottom piece of fabric, and fold it around the pant leg where you want it to go. {Mark this with a pencil.} Use the iron to tack down that seam. Once it’s cooled, you’ll have a little circle of fabric, the same size as the bottom opening of the pants.
  3. Flip that circle cuff of fabric inside out, and cut off the excess length that you don’t need. Then remove the adhesive strip that’s around the top – the section that will stick to your pant leg. Flip your Belle Bottom right-side out again.
  4. Now, slide your little round fabric cuff back onto the pant leg, so the unfinished pant edge is inside. Line it up with your pencil mark. Now iron that adhesive section to your pants. Once you’ve done this, you’re halfway!
  5. Now, flip the whole pair of pants inside out, and remove that last piece of adhesive tape.
  6. Fold the Belle Bottom fabric up over the edge of the pant seam – making them the length you prefer. Use your hot iron to tack that seam down too. And, you can go ahead and give the whole pair of pants a quick iron if you’d like, to smooth out any wrinkles you might have caused during the process.
  7. Smile – You’re done! Look at that – old pants get a new life, you save money in your clothing budget, and the kids get compliments on their one of a kind fashion statements. Life is good…

Super simple, right? And the instructions that come with the Belle Bottoms have more thorough instructions and lots of tips too. If I can do this right the first time – then anyone can. Seriously. {And…. FYI: Keep reading. At the bottom of the post there’s a chance to win a HUGE prize package that includes a set of these sweet Belle Bottoms!}

“The trick is growing up without growing old.” – Casey Stengel

I hate to waste anything. Ever. I’m totally live by the phrase “Use it up, Wear it Out, Make it do…or Do without.” I get that from my grandma, for sure. So when I realized that I had some scrap  of this adorable polka dot fabric left over, I used ’em to make a cute shabby chic style matching headband. I used one of Abby’s fabric covered headbands as the base. I cut the scrap piece of fabric into little strips. I used the little adhesive strips on them to double ’em over and make little loops on each end, and pulled out a few extra strings to give each bare edge a nice little fray. Then I simply tied them together, and attached with hot glue to the head band. Super cute.

My Suprising Secret Weapon for Kitchen Success….

“If You Don’t Like My Cooking, Lower Your Standards.” – Unknown… For most of my adult life, I lived alone. And preparing meals for one doesn’t exactly lead to gourmet cooking skills, know what I mean? Add in that I was a vegetarian for 5 years {so I didn’t learn to cook meat until a couple years ago, and am still learning} – and that I have pretty simple tastes, and you get a chick with solid basic cooking skills, but nothing especially impressive. Flash forward…. 3 years ago, within a 2 month time frame, I found out I was pregnant, extended family moved in with me, my boyfriend moved in, pets moved in – and I was suddenly managing an extremely full house! Since I was in charge of most of the cooking, I had to give myself a crash course in cooking for a crowd 101. Well, I’m proud to say that I’ve learned a LOT in the past couple of years. And can I tell you my best secret for success in the kitchen? It’s not cookbooks or classes, it’s not marinades or sauces…..

retro aprons from flirty aprons

Fun Retro Aprons are my Secret Weapon

Nope – my secret weapon to kitchen success is a super cute apron and accessories. Sound silly? Hear me out… Think of how clothes or uniforms totally change your mindset. A pretty cocktail dress can totally boost your confidence. Putting on your business suit puts you in a take charge mood. Heck, just getting up and fully dressed – and out of the “Frump Mom” look of pony tail and sweats can help you get more motivated to tackle your day, am I right? Well for me, throwing on a super pretty, retro styled apron makes me feel more at home in the kitchen. A bit of a domestic goddess even. I’m a big fan of making everyday challenges a little more fun by using cool products and gear – so things like zebra print cleaning gloves, polka dot pot holders, and aprons with ruffles and bows make me enjoy chores around the house a lot more. Try it – you’ll see what I mean.

Retro Aprons and accessories from Flirty Aprons

I have several styles and accessories from Flirty Apron… I’ve bought gear from other sites too, but these are always my favorite. I buy TONS of gifts here too – my girlfriends love ’em. This one above is my all-time fave – it’s called the Marilyn Sugar n’ Spice, and there’s a matching little girls size too. Love it, right? It’s pretty enough that when we’re throwing parties {which is like, all the time…} I can wear this even after guests arrive. It looks trendy over a cute black party dress – and ensures that when I take it off and scoot on out of the kitchen, my dress isn’t a mess. {Do I sound sooooo 1950’s? Maybe a little. But I do kind of enjoy the whole homemaking thing…} If you want to check these out too, there is an uh-MAY-zing deal right now I wanted to share… One of the best buys I’ve seen on Flirty Apron in a long time:

$30 of Aprons, Kitchen Gloves and More at FlirtyAprons.com for Only $15!

All you have to do to snag these sweet savings is to head to Spotted Fox, a new favorite site of mine. Take 1 minute to log in,  click “Today’s Deal” – then scroll down the side a bit to find the Flirty Aprons deal. Once you purchase it {and hurry – it ends in 4 days!} – you’ll get a coupon code to use on their site. And – if you’re joining as a new member from this special Sunshine and Sippy Cups referral link, you’ll get a bonus $5 in credit too! Easy peasy – and you’re getting half off. You can even use this on any sale items on their site too. Awesomesauce.

A little bit about Flirty Aprons…

First off, let me tell you this from my own experience – these aprons rock. I’ve had one of mine for over a year, and wear it a TON. It’s been through so much wash and wear, but honestly you can’t tell at all. These have great details, are well made, and are sturdy enough that you don’t have to worry about spilling on them. Because that would kind of defeat the point, right? Lol.

  • Flirty Aprons has been featured on dozens of publications and TV programs including Better Homes and Gardens, Country Living, Daytime, The Bonnie Hunt Show, Best Desserts and many more!
  • So many colors and prints to choose including mint, red and chocolate, cherry, zebra, florals and more.
  • 30-day money back guarantee on all purchases.
  • Over 50 different apron styles to choose from, and all orders ship in one business day.

There is no limit to how many vouchers you can purchase – but you can only use ONE voucher per purchase at Flirty Aprons. That means that this could be an uh-MAY-zing way to start stocking up on super affordable holiday gifts. Buy an apron to go with a plate of homemade cookies, and you’ve got a super sweet gift for your favorite neighbors. Add an apron to a gift basket with a fun cookbook like Hostess with the Mostess: A Galaxy of Retro Recipes or Vintage Cocktails: Retro Recipes for the Home Mixologist – and a few super cute kitchen gadgets like these faves of mine: Animal House Monkey Peeler, Head Chefs Spatula Man, or Ninjabread Men Cookie Cutters – and you’ve got a perfect gift for just about any woman in your life. {It’s ok if they’re not usually a cooking or kitchen-lovin’ type. I’m telling ya, fun stuff like this motivates anyone to have more fun with meals.} Or you could even send an apron and a spa gift card to your best girlfriend – so she can enjoy her days more inside AND outside of the house. Love it.

Friend don’t let friends pay full price – share this sweet deal too!

How to Change a Squirmy Baby

“Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn’t music.” – William Stafford… It’s funny. Everyone thinks that the infant days are the hardest. And yes, they are exhausting… The total lack of sleep, the stress of feeding time, and if it’s your first baby it takes awhile to build confidence in what you’re doing – that baby is so teeny tiny! But those first few months pass by in a blur, and it gets easier. Now that my little one is a toddler {she just turned 2 at the end of July} – I’m starting to miss those Baby-Days. You know – where if you set her on a blanket on the floor, she was still there even if you turned away for 2 seconds. {Unlike a toddler who is attempting to climb into the fish tank, or some other equally fun activity, as soon as you so much as blink….} Even once they’re slightly mobile, you can keep baby safe and occupied in a bouncy seat, playpen, or a saucer with bells and whistles to push. But not so much with a toddler – they are MOVERS. Our little dog Deuce follows Abby all day, and they explore every inch of this house like they’re Lewis & Clark on an adventure to find, touch, and examine every.single.item. in their path. Ah, motherhood…..

toddler playing in the mud

“Having a two-year-old is like having a blender that you don’t have the top for.” – Jerry Seinfeld

As you can see – turning your back for even a moment can lead to total shenanigans when you’ve got a little mover around. She’s learned how to open the sliding glass door that leads to the patio {I installed an alarm, so I’ll know. But she thinks that the alarm is super funny, so it doesn’t stop her. I just can’t win…} – I heard the beeping, but in less than a minute she’d used her toddler super powers to find the one spot of mud in the whole garden. Lovely. But – she was smiling, so I decided to just roll with it and let her mud it up. I try to pick my battles wisely. With an adventurous toddler, you’ll have a rough life if you can’t laugh most it off each day, am I right?

“You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.” – Franklin P Jones

Once your baby starts getting mobile – diaper changes start getting tougher! No worries – Huggies comes to the rescue with another Smart Mom Solution – Slip-On style diapers. Abby has started the whole potty training adventure already – but we’re still using Pull-Ups. But before we started this phase, the Slip-Ons from Huggies were seriously a life saver. They’re actually really similar to the ease of getting Pull-Ups on and off – as you see in the video, you can put them on the traditional way, if your little one wants to lay down and hold still {right, lol} – or you can just grab ’em, slip ’em on, and pull ’em up fast. How helpful is that, right?

You will love them, promise. Once I used them, I wondered how I’d been getting along without them – seriously. Motherhood is a challenge – we need all of the help we can get!

The Non-Stalker Way to Track Your Every Movement

So…. I’m not exactly the type of girl you’d ever call “active.” I never played a sport, I’ve never been on a team, I’ve never gone to a gym. Ever. But – I was lucky enough to be one of those girls who never really struggled with her weight. I was never super skinny, but I was healthy and slim through high school. Even as I moved into my twenties and went up a pant size, it wasn’t ever a big deal. Then I got pregnant. Wow. Who even knew it was possible to pack an extra 75 pounds on my frame??? Suddenly, my weight had become a bit of an issue. And by a bit, I mean I bit my lip every time someone asked, “Ohmygosh, you look ready to pop any minute now!!” when I was only 7 months along. Oh, the joys of motherhood….

some ecards - I didn't make it to the gym today

I haven’t made it to the gym in 32 years. At least I’m consistent….

OK – forgive the pic quality on this one. It was a super small pic on some ecards, and didn’t want to play nice when I made it a little bigger to put it in this post. But – it’s the perfect picture to explain my life, and relationship to fitness. I remember when I was invited to bring my nephew to the Nike World HQ for the Young Athletes Innovation Summit earlier this year… They sent us an email a couple weeks before we’d fly out for this event, with suggestions on what we should wear. It mentioned not to wear competing brands – and to dress in sneakers, hoodies or tees, and comfy bottoms. I thought, “Oh. No. Do NOT tell me that I’m going to have to do activities. I don’t DO activities.” I was concerned… So I handled it by wearing jeans and wedges. No one can make me run in a strappy wedge sandal, right? Right. Luckily, there was lots of walking, but no sporty-type “fun” stuff that would lead to an embarrassing show of my lack of coordination. Whew. Now that you know all this about me, you’ll understand why I am pretty crazy-excited about a new little gadget {oh, how I love gadgets!} that is going to help guide me to a more active lifestyle, totally painlessly. It’s called the Fitbit – watch this quick video to get a feel for it…

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

How cool is this Fitbit, right?

Saying that this little gadget is like a pedometer is like saying that watching a local singer perform at your fave coffee shop is like seeing Beyonce perform in Times Square – not even in the same ballpark! Yes, the Fitbit tracks your steps, but that’s where the similarity stops. It has so many super helpful tools that go along with it, that can help everyone from the totally non-sporty types like me push themselves to a healthier level, as well as help super-athletes track their training. How do I love the Fitbit? Well, let me count the ways….

  1. It’s simple: It’s crazy how easy it is to get started with the Fitbit. You open the box, place the Fitbit on the base, then plug it into your computer. Click through a couple of steps to set it all up – and BAM! You’re ready to rock. Seriously, it’s that easy.
  2. It’s easy to conceal: Unlike the big, bulky, ugly pedometers you’re used to seeing – the Fitbit is sleek and easy to hide. I clip mine over my front bra clasp – and honestly don’t notice it at all. {Although my toddler saw me put it on a couple of days ago, and is now constantly digging down my shirt, looking for it. Good times…} You can also clip it to your waistband, or pocket.
  3. It’s magic: Ok, not really. But it feels like magic. Everyday the Fitbit is tracking your steps, your stairs, your sleep, and more. But -there’s no need to have to plug it in regularly and download all that helpful into – it wirelessly uploads your data automatically to the Fitbit site, whenever you are nearby. Then you can monitor your progress, and use all of the sweet – and totally free – tools on their site. PERFECT for busy moms like me.
  4. It’s a multi-tasker: This baby is a hard worker – It’ll show you how many steps you took during a day, so you can work on increasing those steps. Each day around lunch I check my progress – if the number is low, I know I need to add in an extra walk around the neighborhood with Abby. It’s seriously helping me push myself to be more active each day – without going to the gym, or doing crazy workouts. Love this.

It tracks, analyzes, and stores data on your every movement, day and night – but in a totally non-creepy, not stalkerish way. More like a super cool and protective older brother, who’s just always watching out for you, and encourages you to do your best. You can even download an app for your phone, so that you’ve got help any time you need it – It can do things like let you know how many calories you should be eating that day, based on your activity level. I am so excited at the progress I’m making already, with increasing my steps each day. I had lost about 20 pounds earlier this year using the Nutrisystem diet. But now that I’m on my own, my weight has held really steady. I love that this gadget is totally pushing me to lose the rest that I need to take off too, by walking more, taking more stairs, and more. I can’t recommend it enough!

Job Interview Etiquette for Women

Job Interview etiquette

The Proper Interview Etiquette… If you are looking for a job and have an interview, there are some key things to remember before going in for the interview. In terms of interview etiquette, you need to give yourself the best chance possible to get the job you are interviewing for. Having a good first impression is important and you want to make sure you set yourself apart from other potential employees.

Attire: No matter what job you are interviewing for, whether it is through a staffing employment agency or a company, you should dress professionally. This means wearing business attire no matter what job you are interviewing for. You should carry yourself with confidence and reflect that in your clothing. Since your clothes are the first impression that you make, you should make it a good one. While you want the interviewer to focus on your skills and personality, what you wear will be consciously or unconsciously judged.

Preparation: As you prepare yourself for your interview, it is important to come with the right knowledge and documents. This means first researching the company you are interviewing for. You should be familiar with the actual job and what it entails. You should also know the history of the company, the mission statement and any other information you can gain from its website or other media outlet. You should come to the interview prepared to ask some questions at the end. You will more than likely be asked if you have any and it is a good idea to have something in mind before you arrive at the interview. You might also come up with more during the interview, which is fine as well. Even if the company already has your resume, it is good interview etiquette to bring several copies of your resume as well as a list of references. You do not want to be asked for any documents and come up short-handed. You are in competition with other applicants and you want to set yourself apart as much as possible by coming as prepared as you can.

Essentials: As you make your way to the interview, you should make sure you have plenty of time to get there. It is recommended to arrive a few minutes early and to be friendly to the first person you meet. Usually it will be someone at the front desk and they will often talk to the interviewer afterwards about what they thought. This is a great opportunity to be professional no matter who you meet. Once you meet the interviewer, you should have a strong and confident handshake. You should always make good eye contact throughout the interview. Your nonverbal cues can be just as important as what you say. You should talk yourself up and focus on your strengths and why you are a good fit for the job. It is sometimes difficult to talk so positively about yourself, but it is crucial to do so.

Going in for an interview can be a stressful experience. To lower your stress level, you should come prepared by bringing the right documents and doing the research needed to feel confident during the interview. By following these tips, you are sure to land the job you want.
