The Magic Way to Simplify Digital Photo Organization

“A good snapshot stops a moment from running away.” – Eudora Welty… I love photography. I’m definitely the person in my family that’s responsible for capturing those great moments we have all year – from videotaping birthdays, to snapping fun pics of the kids in the pool, to making the annual photo books for everyone at Christmas time. I have so many favorites – but I’m not always good about organizing them…

Christmas portrait - how to organize online photos

This is Abby last year at the holidays. I can’t even believe how much she has changed over the last 10 months – my oh my, where does the time go? Her hair wasn’t even long enough for pigtails last year! But I love this silly little smile and those chubby cheeks. Priceless to me. [Read more…]

Five Wardrobe Essentials Every Modern Man Needs

“If people turn to look at you on the street, you are not well dressed, but either too stiff, too tight, or too fashionable.”
– Beau Brummel… I love this quote, especially when it comes to men’s fashions. For most guys, it’s almost uncool to be too fashionable – guys don’t want their friends making fun of a nice new shirt, a new haircut that’s too perfect, or a new accessory piece. And since most of they men I know let their wives or partners do the majority of their clothes shopping, it’s important to remember that what looks “cute” to us, might be a total deal-breaker for a guy. I used to work in retail as a personal shopper for years, and while men LOVE to get a woman’s opinion on the gear that they buy, trust me – they do NOT want to hear how “cute” the new shirt you bought them is. Ever. So, when you’re in need of affordable style that’s fashionable without being over the top trendy, a great place to start is the Merona line at Target.

Five Wardrobe Essentials Every Modern Man Needs

These are my 5 must-have picks for fall-into-winter for men. Add in a couple of nice pairs of jeans, a few nice tee shirts, and you’ve got the perfect mix-and-match pieces that your mister can use for just about any occasion. Chino pants are a total classic, and can be dressed up with a tailored shirt and a blazer – or swap the blazer for the puffer vest and you have a whole different casual look. Here are a couple of ideas on how to mix up these pieces in new ways…

Men's Fashion Weekend Look

I love this – It’s mostly basic colors, with just a pop of the bright orange to give it more character. I see this as a great weekend outfit, something to wear for a day out with the family to visit the Farmer’s Market or the Pumpkin Patch. I seriously picked up several of these great basics to add to Mike’s fall wardrobe, I just love ’em. To get links to each individual piece in this outfit, check it out on Polyvore. My favorite thing about this look is that every single item is super affordable – they average out to about $20 each. And if you’ve ever worn the Merona collection yourself, you know the quality is incredible for the price.

Rugged Dressy Look for Modern Men

On this one, you can again click through to my Polyvore board to get links and prices to shop each of the Merona pieces in this outfit. This is a great option for the guy who needs to dress up, but doesn’t like to get too “fancy” – You know, like most guys, lol. It pairs the Classic Chino with the Traditional Blazer – but then mixes in a plaid shirt instead of a plain dress shirt, and adds in a few rugged accessory pieces to keep it down to earth.

How a Busy Mom Can Use Tech to Get a Little “Me Time”

“Most children threaten at times to run away from home. This is the only thing that keeps some parents going.” – Phyllis Diller… Of course I love my little girl. And of course I love my darling little nephews who spend their before-and-after school time at my house too. But – those little lovelies also are sometimes tiny terrors, lol. And as a work at home mom who doesn’t always get a lot of time to myself {remember the good ol’ days, before kids, where you could pee alone – whenever you wanted to?} – so I have to do my best to carve a little bit of “me time” out of each day, to keep me from going crazy. Because you know if momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody gonna be happy, right?

Once Upon A Time

“It’s not easy being a mother. If it were easy, fathers would do it.” – The Golden Girls

Many of you may know that I’m a wee bit tech challenged. {And by “wee” I mean that most new gadgets require me to ask for help – turning it from a ME project to a WE project…} So, when I had the chance to try out the super sweet Klipsch headphones from Best Buy, I honestly wondered what on earth I would even say. I mean – all headphones are the same, right? And what on earth would someone like me need them for? I don’t play games, don’t have an iPod, don’t do any cool stuff that even needs headphones. Which also meant that I’d never owned any either. Well, I am a changed woman. For reals. I opened up the Klipsch box to find a super small set of little earbuds – which I thought would annoy me in my ear. Then Mike made a suggestion that has rocked my world ever since – He said, “Why don’t you try watching all those shows you miss, at night while you’re trying to get Abby to sleep, while wearing the headphones so you don’t wake her up?”

The Mister had a great idea. One that benefits ME. I’m still kind of in shock…..

I never have time to watch TV, and don’t have much interest in it anyway. But, I have four shows now that I do really love – Once Upon A Time, Fringe, Homeland, and the new Revolution. So since I’m too busy to catch my shows when they air, I use Hulu to keep caught up on my faves. The speakers on my laptop aren’t that amazing, but they get the job done. But ohmyHECK ladies – Once I used the Klipsch headphones to watch tv online, I was blown away. I could hear so much detail that had been missing…. Water running in the background, the whispered dialogue was as clear as could be, it was amazing. I was seriously impressed, which I did not expect.

Pandora Radio

“Raising a kid is part joy and part guerilla warfare.” – Ed Asner

So, once I realized what an amazing difference these headphones made in the sound quality coming from my laptop, I decided to try them out on my other favorite online entertainment site – Pandora.com. I must have music playing, all day, all the time. So since most of my time is spent working online, the majority of the songs I hear are played here. And the Klipsch didn’t disappoint – they made my favorite songs sound good again! And – they are amazing at blocking out all of the background noise in a room too, which is another surprise for such a small set of headphones. But what this means, is that I’m able to throw on my headphones when I need to work for a couple of hours. Mike can hang out in the living room with Abby – she can chase the dog with a Nerf sword around the couch 17 times, screaming while he barks and howls – and I {blessedly!!} don’t hear a thing. I can also use the headphones to just zone out for a bit – listening to more Pandora on my iPhone while I do the laundry, or other chores. Or I can head out to the patio to read a book and listen to music, without hearing the commotion going on inside. I’m hooked.

Find the Klipsch on BestBuy.com, or look for them in-store. And for more Smart Mom Tech, check out my Best Buy WOLF Pinterest board.

Let’s Get Our Kids Playing Outside Again – #TogetherCounts

“Adopt the pace of nature:  her secret is patience.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson… I am very much an outdoorsy type of person. I love to spend time in nature, even if that’s just an afternoon spent working on the patio, surrounded by our trees and garden. So I’m very lucky to live in the Pacific Northwest, where there are amazing natural places to visit. Just an half hour drive brings us into the woods – with pine trees, rivers and lakes, mountains to climb and trails to hike. And, after having my nephews living with me over the past couple of years, I’ve realized how very important it is to get kids out of the house, away from the video games and TV, and out breathing fresh air and running wild – in the wild.

Boulder Cave, Washington

“The woods were made for the hunters of dreams” – Sam Walter Foss

The kids love this place – Boulder Cave, in Washington. There is so much to see and do, and they have a blast. I never even hear any whining about video games the whole time, lol. Whether it’s here, or camping, or fishing, or a day out boating with friends, time spent outdoors really helps all of us relax and refresh again.

Boys catching frogs

“Climb up on some hill at sunrise.  Everybody needs perspective once in a while, and you’ll find it there.” – Robb Sagendorph

Things like this totally make me happy – the boys out by the water, catching frogs. Reminds me of when I was a kid. I feel old to say stuff like this – But “when I was a kid,” we spent all day playing outside. Riding bikes on our quiet street, building forts in the back field, or driving my Barbie dolls on a “Safari” through moms vegetable garden. I hate that so many kids have become so un-used to the outdoors, that they don’t even know how to have fun out there anymore. They’re totally missing out. So we’re celebrating Take it Outside Week October 14 – 20, which I am totally excited to learn about. I found this info on a seriously amazing site called Together Counts. Learn a little more:

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” – Albert Einstein

Together Counts is all about getting kids outside and active, eating better foods, and building healthier families. The principle behind their program is Energy Balance, which means balancing the calories we eat with the calories we burn. The idea is to get more families eating and getting active together, with a message of moderation – not “good food vs. bad.” I’m very much an “everything in moderation” style of mom. I do my best to keep our house stocked with healthy fruits and veggies, and good snack foods. But I like to bake cookies and cupcakes too. As long as we’re active, and trying to keep a good balance, I feel good about our choices. So I love that Together Counts is realistic, and has tips that fit into a real mom’s life.

Together Counts is a first-of-its kind coalition that brings together more than 195 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and professional sports organizations. Learn more and sign the pledge on TogetherCounts.com.

You can also learn more by following them on Twitter and Facebook, where you’ll find loads of great tips and ideas to use. Or enter to WIN big for your kids school – There are several contests and prizes, like a $30,000 grant and a brand new playground for the winners school. How cool is that, right? The whole site is filled with an uh-may-zing amount of information, resources, and tools – for everyone from parents, to teachers, to students. Love it.

Let’s Chat: What do you think of Together Counts? Are you interested in finding creative new ways to keep your family healthy? Share in the comments!

And mark your calendars – Join Together Counts at a Twitter party on 10/17 from 8-9 PM EST in the hashtag #TogetherCounts! Hope to see you all there!

What Would You Build on a Free Piece of Land?

“Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for – in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.” – Ellen Goodman… Now, that doesn’t sound much like the American Dream that we all imagine, does it? Definitely not my idea of happiness. After losing my job while I was on maternity leave a couple of years ago, I had to make a lot of changes in life – I had to find ways to cut down my bills, simplify my life, and chart a new path. That led to buying a house with my mom instead of saving to buy one on my own. {Yep, we like each other well enough to live together. Almost all of the time… Lol.} It led to me starting this site, and finding freelance work online instead of going back into retail management. It meant selling some of our unneeded things, cutting back on things like cable and nights out, and cutting more coupons. But – without ever meaning to, these changes are leading me to actually finally get closer to my ideal life. My version of the American Dream – I get to work from home, spend time with Abby, have flexibility when I need it, and am my own boss. Sure, I’d love to make the income that I made running retail stores, but I’m happier here at home.

American dream - How to build your dream home

What would your perfect home be like?

The house that I bought with my mom isn’t my “perfect” home, but it truly is pretty great. It sits on a really big piece of property, with a covered patio, 4-bay shop, fenced yard for Abby to play, and an in-ground pool that quickly became the gathering spot for all of our friends and family each summer. There’s enough space for us all to be comfortable, and I even have a guest bedroom for when friends come into town to visit. The house isn’t huge, but it’s cozy, it’s got what we need, and it makes me happy. And, our untraditional living arrangement really works well for us. It started out with more of my family living with me too – which was a little bit crazy for a couple of years. But I love that Abby has gotten to grow up so close to her grandma, cousins, and uncle James. And I’m lucky that we all get along well enough to have made the situation work, so that I’m able to get by on a smaller income while I build my business. I’m so grateful that when life gets tough, I have a great home filled with amazing family to rely on!

American Dream - How to buy a piece of land with little down

American Dream – How to Build Your Dream Home on a FREE Piece of Land

My dream, ever since I was a little girl, was to build my own house someday. {I also wanted to be an architect, and would draw out my perfect floorplans and stuff all the time…} I love the idea of creating something that’s just exactly what I want – unlike when you are looking at homes, and have to find one that’s “almost” perfect to settle for. We still sometimes dream about this – but honestly, I wasn’t even sure how we’d get started. I recently was introduced to this really cool option by a friend of mine – It’s called LandCentral. They make it easy to buy your own piece of land without a ton of money down, to build on now, or as an investment for your future. And – the coolest thing about it all is that to help introduce their program to more people, they are doing a giveaway where one amazingly lucky winner will get to choose their own TOTALLY FREE piece of land in one of five states! Can you even imagine? To enter, visit LandCentral.com. It only takes a few minutes, and could lead to an amazing opportunity for you and your family!

How Much Do You Really Know About Your Health Insurance?

Insurance provides a safety net for your family – which should bring you a lot of peace of mind, right?… The problem is, so many of us don’t really understand our health insurance, so we don’t know if we’re getting the right coverage, if we’re paying for benefits we don’t need while missing out on things we DO need, paying too much, or worse – missing coverage that you might need to help in an emergency. According to a recent study on consumers and health care, 1 in 4 Americans choose the wrong level of health care coverage. The main reason that this happens is because people don’t understand health insurance very well, and don’t have the time to read through hundreds of pages to figure out the differences between all of the options that are available to them – so they kind of go on autopilot, and stick with the same plan year after year. But plans change – what was included in that plan last year might not still be there this time. And families change – new babies, new doctors, new health problems all lead to new needs in your plan. So what do you do?

Understanding Health Insurance During Open Enrollment

For many people, this is the season of open enrollmet, meaning it’s the time of year when you make a choice on which insurance to commit to for the whole new upcoming year. Here are a few terms you’ll need to know:

  • Deductible: This is a fixed dollar amount that you will have to pay out of pocket for medical expenses before your insurance will kick in.
  • Copayment: This is the fee that you have to pay {usually upfront} out of pocket for each service you get. There are usually different copays for doctor visits, specialists, out of network doctors, and hospital stays. Since this is a fee you know you’ll be paying, it’s an important one to compare.
  • Flexible spending accounts or arrangements (FSA):  These are accounts offered and administered by your employer, that provide a way for you to set aside, out of your paycheck, pretax dollars to pay for your share of insurance premiums or medical expenses not covered by your health plan. This can be a tricky one to estimate – but if you know that the kids will need braces, or other services that will lead to big out of pocket expenses, you can save by using one of these accounts.
  • Maximum out-of-pocket expense: Until this dollar amount is reached, you and your insurance will split your bills according to the plan agreement. After this dollar amount is reached – they’ll pick up all expenses after that. If you have any on-going medical problems in your family, this can be an important number to compare.

These are some of the main things that I look at when comparing plans. But, if you have any other terms that confuse you, you can check out this health insurance terms glossary to find anything you need help with. And – keep in mind, no matter which insurance you choose, there are ALWAYS going to be expenses that are not covered. But – there’s one more tip to know, to help protect your family in case of emergencies. {Because we all know, as a mom – you MUST expect the unexpected!}

How to protect your family in an emergency

The video explains how Aflac works pretty darn well, but if you need a little more info, or want to get a quote, visit them online at Aflac.com. And, I can tell you from multiple experiences that this is a service that totally lives up to the claims it makes. It has exceeded my expectations every.single.time. They have a lot of options to choose from, and even one of the smallest plans {at the lowest rates} is still going to be a life saver to you if something goes wrong. When I had Abby – things happened pretty unexpectedly. My water broke 3 weeks early. Her delivery suddenly took a bad turn while I was pushing – her oxygen dropped, her vitals were bad. They brought in an NICU team to take her away as soon as she was out, before I could even hold her. We spent over a week at the hospital – meaning a lot of extra expenses. Having Aflac to help with the extra expenses that insurance didn’t cover helped me avoid a ton of unneeded stress, and just focus on my family, and getting us all back home again. I seriously recommend this for every family out there – You will not regret it, but you may regret not joining, when you face an emergency yourself.

Let’s Chat: What are your biggest challenges with your insurance? Do you have a story to share about Aflac too? Leave some comment love….

{Disclaimer: I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Aflac and received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate. All opinions are 100% my own – Only the best services and products get shared here – I love Aflac, and think you will too.}

Three Ways to Wear a Blazer for Fall

“I base most of my fashion sense on what doesn’t itch.” – Gilda Radner… When I was 19, I got a job working in retail. It was a perfect fit for me – I love sales, I love talking to people all day, and I love playing with pretty clothes. I moved up over the years, moving on to manage several smaller boutiques and retail shops in the mall. One thing that I loved was working as a personal shopper – helping women put together new outfits, or even full wardrobes. {Yes, hard to believe it, when you see me today in my hoodie and leggings, working from home, lol.} A tip that I shared often is to invest in a few key classic pieces each season, the type of items that never really go out of style. One of those great basics is a blazer – whether it’s for work, a girls night out, or just a casual lunch date, a blazer totally boosts your style, and will get worn season after season, year after year. Keep reading to see three cool ways to wear it – and learn where I found a new fave this fall…

How to wear a blazer - fall fashion - teal and silver
All pieces in this outfit are from the Merona collection at Target – Love it, right? I’m excited to find the plaid Blazer – the colors are subdued, so it’s not too wild. But it really brings a little bit of a funky twist to your more basic wardrobe pieces. And I love these blues, greens, and greys going into the holiday season. {Want the link to find a specific item? Just click each of the pics to check them out on Polyvore, where you’ll be able to go directly to the item you want on Target.com, easy peasy.}

How to wear a blazer - funky fall work look

This look makes me wish I had a “real” office to go to each day… Somewhere to get a little more dressed up. The color of this dress is perfect – take off the blazer, and you’re ready for holiday parties. And speaking of the blazer – how fun is the extra trim detailing on this one? Makes it a little big more polished and dressy. Add some cool Merona patterned tights and “shooties” – and you’ve got a look perfect for any event. I can totally see me wearing this at one of our local business meetings – it’s professional, but still fun and a little bit funky with the animal print accessories.

How to wear a blazer - taking summer clothes into fall

Do you have some summer favorites that you’re just not ready to pack away yet? A blazer works as a perfect partner to bring things like strapless dresses and strappy tanks into the cooler fall weather. Add some fun colored tights paired with tall boots, and you’ll stay warm all the way through winter. This is a great way to extend your wardrobe through the changes in seasons each year. And again – all of these pieces, even the accessories, are available at Target stores across the country, or at Target.com. Which means not only are the fashions adorable, but they’re also totally affordable too.
