“Social Media is about sociology and psychology more than technology.” –  Brain Solis

As bloggers who promote brands, our goal is not to simply be a commercial for those brands – we’re here to help them build a connection to our readers. People read our blogs, and follow our posts, because they are educated and entertained by what we share. So, my tip this week is remember why people read you blog – and don’t let the possibility of getting paid make you post things that just aren’t a good fit. Good content is the most important thing you can do to build your brand and your blog. But – we do all need to pay the bills too, right? So here are some great places to find new ways to earn, too….

Is Facebook Really Charging for Status Updates?

No, not exactly. But – if you haven’t noticed it yet – there is a new option available to all business page owners when you write your next status update. It’s called Facebook Promoted Posts – “Promote your page posts so more people see them in their news feed.” Sounds great, right? But there’s a catch – you have to PAY to have those posts promoted. That does not sound so great.

mobile facebook use

Did you know… only 16 out of every 100 of your “fans” actually see your status updates?

If you haven’t seen the new update about Promotional Posts yet, you should soon. When you use Facebook as your page, and begin to write your status update, it will show you a pop-up bubble with the option to promote that post. If you click for details, it will then let you know that you’ll be paying for that chance to have your post seen by more of your own fans. This feature started as a test option, where personal users could pay to have their status updates shared more widely, but they quickly realized they would have better luck getting businesses to pay. I had a feeling that Facebook would soon start charging business owners more fees, but this was still pretty surprising. And personally, I think it’s a bad move – Here’s why:

  • First, Facebook said that it wants brands to act more like people – interact with users, not advertise to them. They even have a rule that when you create the large banner image for your Facebook page, you cannot promote sales or deals – because the goal is to have pages to create good content, not ads. So – they will prevent you from using the graphic on your page as an ad, but will now allow you to treat the status updates that you post as ads, by paying to ensure that they are seen? That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
  • Why not just show all of my fans my posts anyway? If Facebook is serious about their stated goal of improving the user experience, then why do they hide my posts? When I like a brand or blog page, it’s because I’m interested in following their posts, and learning what they have to say. So why hide things from me that I chose to follow?
  • Right now, Facebook shows your post to a limited amount of your fans – the average is 16%. How do they decide who to show it to? Well, they look at whether someone has interacted with your page before, whether the status update is popular {lots of likes and shares means Facebook will show it to even more people}, and what the content is {picture, video, links, etc}. They do this with a goal of giving you only updates that will be interesting to you. So why would they do the complete opposite, and allow people to pay to show me status updates that Facebook would not have shown me in the first place?

But, this is the way it is now, so I have to adapt. We all do. And, from what I’m hearing around the web, there will be a lot more changes coming soon too. {Isn’t there always a new change coming to Facebook? Ugh.}  While they still guarantee that Facebook will never charge people to use it, they WILL be adding quite a few more features that they can charge business owners to use. I hope the next ones are better than this.

If I wanted to pay for an ad, I would. I shouldn’t have to pay to have my status shown to people who have already chosen to like my page.

Well, now that we know what this new Promoted Posts tool is, let’s take a look at how it works, so you can take advantage of it if you choose to. I mean, like it or not, working on the web means constantly adapting to new changes. So – here’s some basic tips on using the new Promoted Posts function on Facebook.

  1. Switch to use Facebook as your page, and click on the status update box, to start a new post. You’ll see a new button at the bottom of the box, labeled “Promote.”
  2. Click the drop down menu arrow, and you’ll see options to set your price, payment method, and other settings.
  3. Now, you can promote your post. You can also go to other previous posts {from the last 3 days only}, and add them to be promoted as well, within the budget amount that you have set up.

When the post appears in people’s newsfeeds, it will be labeled as sponsored. I’m not sure how bold the label will be, or whether it will appear more spammy looking to people. But – I can see the appeal to this option. We’ve all used Facebook for such a long time, that our eyes are trained to kind of ignore that side of the page where the ads are. Think about it – Can you remember any ads that you’ve seen lately? But you DO notice what’s in your newsfeed, so allowing brands to add their sponsored posts right into the stream you’re reading – right in between an announcement about your best friend’s new baby, and an upcoming graduation party for a niece, then the sponsored post is pretty darn likely to be actually looked at and read. This also helps with the mobile user problem – a growing percentage of people visit Facebook primarily from their cell phones, totally bypassing ads altogether. But now, brands have a new way to reach them.

What Facebook says about Promoted Posts

“Nothing has changed about how your posts are shared with the people who like your Page.” – Facebook.com A lot of activity happens on Facebook and most people only see some of it in their news feeds. They may miss things when they’re not on Facebook, or they may have a lot of friends and Pages, which results in too much activity to show all of it in their news feed. If you don’t promote your post, many of the people connected to your Page may still see it. However, by promoting a post, you’re increasing its potential reach so an even larger percentage of your Page audience and the friends of those interacting with your post will see it.

Facebook like button

Do you “Like” this new update?

Is this tool something that you’ll use to promote your own posts? As a user, do you think you’ll be bothered by these sponsored updates in your newsfeed? I’d love to hear some comments on all sides of this issue – I’m still trying to figure out what I think about it all. And, if you’d like to learn more, you can visit the Facebook Promoted Posts FAQ page, and a little more about Facebook advertising and it’s always changing form.

A Drab to Fab Mommy Makeover

Drab to Fab Makeover & More

Do you need a momma makeover too? I know I do! The wardrobe that worked in my “old life” – pre-baby, when I was skinnier, worked in fashion merchandising, and went out a lot – doesn’t exactly work well with my new routines or my new shape. With the help of Nutrisystem I’m down 16 pounds so far – {can I get a woo hoo??} – but still… I don’t quite fit into my old clothes, but am losing enough that my “in between” styles no longer fit either. I need a new wardrobe that fits my new busy-in-a-different way lifestyle.

  • Instead of running crazy-busy all day to set up new store displays, build outfits for customers, and stock shelves – I’m running crazy-busy after a toddler who just stuck yet another crayon up her nose. Less glamorous for sure. But I need to stop wearing elastic waist pants….
  • I finally fit into my VERY favorite super expensive pair of jeans from before I had a baby… But I don’t fit into everything. I’m losing weight, and think I’ll hit my goal by the end of summer. But while I’m getting smaller, I seem to be a very different shape than I was pre-baby, and not all of my old styles are going to work for me now.
  • I need clothes that are fun and trendy, and get me out of frump-mom territory, while still being comfy and easy enough to work from home with a toddler.
  • Instead of fashions that can go from work to a night out – I need something that goes from blogging at my desk to cleaning Cheerios out of the VCR, and is still presentable for a last minute playdate at the park. My, how life has changed.

So – I was super excited when a store that I LOVE, Last Call by Neiman Marcus, has a sweet contest going on. Visit their site to share your quick story on why YOU need a “Drab to Fab” Makeover too! You’re automatically entered to win a $500 Shopping Spree, a chance to be featured in their newsletter, and style advice from pro Brandy Lunsford. Awesome, right?

How a Biscotti Break Makes Mom Life a Little Easier

Today’s lives move so fast. We often forget to take a break, a moment to just slow things down and breathe… A photo captures a moment forever. – Do you take a “moment” just for yourself each day? I mean sure, it’d be nice if I was able to get out for a girl’s night out more often. Or maybe an afternoon of shopping, or a mani-pedi. Heck – some days it would be nice if I could just go to the bathroom by myself…. But, no matter how hectic the busy mom life gets, it’s important to find a way to carve out at least a little bit of time that’s just for you.

a mom moment

Yes, I know that taking a biscotti break isn’t the same as a day at the spa.

But it is a great little addition to my day – and honestly, it’s those little moments in each day that help keep stress at bay anyway, right? Nonni’s Biscotti is so perfect – high quality all-natural ingredients. The perfect combination of textures and flavors too – really lightly crunchy {not like the rock-hard store-bought biscotti’s that I’ve tried before}, with a great blend of sweetness. Seriously, these surprised me – The only biscotti that I’ve ever liked was the homemade version that my friend’s Italian mom and grandma used to make when I’d come to visit – but these Caramel Milk Chocolate bites are crazy good. I believe it when they call them an “Authentic Italian Family Recipe”, I’ve just never had such a good version that you could purchase off the shelf. They’re my new go-to morning snack… I slip out to the back patio with my newspaper, a bowl of biscotti, and a tall glass of iced coffee to dip them into – and for a half hour, it’s all me time, baby.

A Modern Moms “Must Have” for Dining Out with Toddlers

“You put this over a highchair, and you’ve got a place mat that you can easily wipe down.” – Joy Behar… There’s a reason that celebrity moms like Joy Behar from The View are loving this new mom-invented product – because it is a total Smart Solution for Busy Moms! Have you ever taken a toddler out to eat at a restaurant? You know that crazy mess that they make as they throw food on the floor, spill their drink, and use the complimentary crayons to draw on the high chair instead of the coloring sheet? And have you ever wondered how clean those high chairs really are? Then you, my friend, are ready to meet the Neatnik Saucer.

How clever is that, right?

And it seriously works that easily. Sometimes you see a video like this, love it, but it does NOT work the same way when you get it home, right? But this is super fun and just pops open and shut easy peasy. It’s a life saver when dining out, because it really helps prevent that embarrassing mess that toddlers make all over the floor. And – while there are a ton of really great options for toddler high chair covers on their site, my favorite one, the Rome, has an added feature – It’s a blank canvas for little ones to color on while they wait for their dinner. This really helps keep tantrums at bay when you’ve got a hungry tummy or grumpy kiddo.

“A two-year old is kind of like having a blender, but you don’t have a top for it. – Jerry Seinfeld

The Neatnik has worked perfectly on every restaurant high chair we’ve used it on so far. But I also love, love, LOVE using it at home to keep Abby occupied and out of trouble. Her new favorite thing lately is coloring, but it’s amazing how quickly she would lose interest in the coloring book I’d give her, and start sharing her artist skills onto the kitchen floor. But when I set her into her chair with the Rome, she’ll color away forever. Really helps when I’m trying to cook dinner and don’t want a little one running under my feet, you know? It doesn’t fit quite the same on our home high chair, but it honestly works good enough to entertain her, and give me a few minutes to work. The suction cups under the tray portion keep it in place no matter what type of chair you attach it to. Awesome.

“You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.” – Franklin P Jones

If you want to get this smart solution to make dining out less of a mess, you can check out the Rome, and all of the other cute designs of Neatnik Saucer online. And – if you’re feelin’ lucky, you can also enter to WIN one today too! Just use the easy peasy Rafflecopter form below to get your entries in – the more you complete, the more chances you have to win.

Have fun & Good luck!

Because Your Mommy Loves You…

childrens books about mommy

“The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it.” – James Bryce

I love books. I’ve always been a big reader, ever since I was a little girl. I excelled in school mostly because of the fact that I devoured books so quickly. I love the way you can get lost in a good story, learn things about yourself by reading about someone else, and be inspired by the words of others. And while children’s books are more simple than the novels I read now, they have their own kind of beauty sometimes too. My Sister-in-Law gave me one when Abby was a baby – Love You Forever, and it’s so perfectly written that it still makes me cry when I read it. The mother sings this song to her baby as he grows – “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living, My baby you’ll be.” Then, when he’s all grown up, and his mother is old and frail, he rocks her in his arms, and sings to her. Seriously – lump in my throat just writing it. And that’s what a good book does – it moves you. And this new book, a follow up to Because Your Daddy Loves You by Andrew Clements, this story follows a mommy and son on a camping trip, and is a perfect combination of funny and sweet. Read more…

Because Your Mommy Loves You

“In this sweet companion book to Because Your Daddy Loves You, a little boy and his mom go on a hiking trip and camp out under the stars. Mommy is as calm and reassuring, but also goes far to foster her son’s independence in an encouraging and loving way. As heartwarming as its predecessor, this read-aloud book is sure to become a family favorite.”

About the Creators behind the story

Andrew Clements is the author of many best-selling books, among them the middle grade novel Frindle. He lives in Westborough, Massachusetts, and can be found at www.andrewclements.com. R. W. Alley is the illustrator of many beloved picture books, including the Paddington Bear series. He lives in Barrington, Rhode Island. Visit him atwww.rwalley.com. With these two creating stories together, you know that you’re going to get something amazing.

“A good book on your shelf is a friend that turns its back on you and remains a friend.” – Unknown

If you’re a mom too, you will love this book. If you aren’t a mom, but have a special mom in your life – I guarantee that she would appreciate receiving a copy of these incredibly sweet book. Motherhood is a beautiful thing, and books like this remind me of what a special job I have as Abby’s mom. If you’d like to learn a little more about the book, you can find Because Your Mommy Loves You on Amazon – get a peek inside at the story, and order a copy to share with your favorite little ones. I love that this book teaches the importance of learning to do things by yourself. I think that is one of our most important roles as mothers – even when they’re little, we’re slowly preparing them for a future where they’ll be on their own. The more self-sufficient we can help them become, the more equipped they’ll be to enter the “real world” someday when they leave our little nest. Ah…. motherhood.
