Frugal DIY Fun: Toddler Exploring Set

Craft Supplies

“Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn’t music.” – William Stafford

I’m a crafty girl – I love glitter and rhinestones, Mod Podge and Tacky Glue, pretty papers and ribbons…. and I have so much fun sharing my love of all things creative with the kiddo’s in my life. And, crafting with kids has helped me see new things – kids are so fascinated with new textures, shapes, sounds, and colors. That led to the creation of our Toddler Exploring Set – a super easy DIY idea, made from totally inexpensive materials. Even if you’re not usually much of a DIY’er, you can do this. So… Let’s get started! {You might remember me mentioning these Exploring Sets earlier this year in 65 Fun Fall Ideas for Kids – we love making new sets!}

Shaker Bottles

“Having a two-year-old is like having a blender that you don’t have the top for.” – Jerry Seinfeld

You probably already have most of the supplies you’ll need – But one thing that you will need to get in advance is a set of empty water bottles. We used the mini ones – they’re easiest for tiny toddler hands. You’ll also need a good glue {I used Quick Dry Tacky Glue}, so that you can glue each bottle closed. You also might want to get a small shoe box, or cute basket, for your little one to carry their new Exploring Set around in – they love that. Now – the fun part! Read through the list and find some fun ideas to try. All of the bottles are really simple to make, and will totally delight your little one. Enjoy!

“There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million.” – Walt Streightiff

  • Sound Bottles: In the Red bottle above, I used white beans mixed with some fun red glitter – these are nice and noisy when you shake ’em! You can also use things like rice, popcorn kernels, or jingle bells. Kids love discovering the different sounds.
  • Bubble Bottles: Fill half full of water, add a little bit of dish soap, and a squirt or two of food coloring. Your little one will love seeing a plain bottle of water turn into a bubble party when they shake it up!
  • Discovery Bottle: Fill a bottle half way with sand or rice, and add a few tiny toys too. Kids will learn that the toys are there even when they can’t see them – and will love learning how to find them again!
  • Glow Bottle: Fill a bottle with glow in the dark stickers or glow sticks. Show your kiddo how different it looks when they crawl underneath their blanket – what a surprise!
  • Silly Bottle: One of our favorites is to fill a bottle up with little Glitter Pom Poms – these are the cutest thing, and Abby loves them! They look super cute in the bottles, and have such bright and vibrant colors!
  • Snow Globe Bottles: Fill bottles with a mixture of water and glycerin, add food coloring if desired, throw in a pinch {or more, you can never have too much!} of glitter, and add some fun little toys or trees. So much fun!
  • Slow-Down Bottle: Fill a bottle 2/3 full of clear corn syrup, then add sequins, or tiny toys. As they tilt the bottle, they can relax and slow down while they watch the toys sloooowly slide to the side.
  • Nature Bottle: These ones are more temporary – grab a tiny branch off of an evergreen tree, some fall leaves, dandelion flowers, acorns – whatever is in season. Your little one will delight in getting to really look at these things up close – you’ll delight in knowing that they won’t EAT them while they have them up close!

Big Kid Options

  • Magnet Bottle: Fill a bottle with rice or sand, and add a few metallic items, like pennies, old game pieces, etc. Then – let them use a big magnet against the outside of the bottle to ‘magically’ pull those hidden items into view!
  • Guessing Bottle: Fill a bottle up with tiny pebbles – or something fun like Jelly Beans! – and have your kids guess how many are inside. Don’t glue the top on this one, since you’ll then want to dump it out, count it together, and see how close they were. Our boys love to challenge each other.

Do you have any fun ideas to add?

There are so many different variations you can use – and I’d love to hear your creative ideas! We love to make new bottles all the time, and sometimes it’s hard to keep coming up with great ideas – so I look forward to what you guys come up with. Keep it crafty!

Cuddle Barn Storytime Teddie – Perfect Holiday Pal! Giveaway – 12/16

Cuddle Barn Storytime Bear

“Just knowing that your teddy bear is home waiting at the day’s end makes each day happier.” – Ted Menten

Do you remember your first love? Not the crush you had in middle school – but your first real love? Mine was Big Bear. He was a big handsome bear, slept and on my bed every night to keep me safe, and even attended a few tea parties with me and my dolls. Total sweetheart. There’s a reason that a great guy is often described as a Teddy Bear – because a teddy bear is one of the most loveable things around.

Abby and Cuddle Barn Storytime Teddy

“A teddy bear is your childhood wrapped up in faded yellow fur, and as such, he commands affection long after he is out grown.” – Pam Brown

I was so excited when this little bear arrived in the mail…. Meet Storytime Teddie from Cuddle Barn. This little guy is cute as a stinkin’ button, with super soft fuzzy fur, and an adorable little fleece hoodie. But he’s more than just good looking – this little guy is so much fun. With the push of a little button on his paw, he reads to you and your child from his book – and Abby is just completely entertained and delighted listening to his version of ‘Twas the Night before Christmas.

Storytime Teddy

“Teddy bears don’t need hearts as they are already stuffed with love.” – Unknown

Abby brings her Teddie all around the house with her. She’ll sit him down, and then sit herself down on the floor right across from him. She’ll say, “Book?” and press his little paw – then she gives him her complete attention while he reads her a story. When he says, “Dash away, Dash away, Dash away all!” she claps and giggles. Totally priceless. He reads the entire story too – check him out in action…

“A room without a bear is like a face without a smile.” – Unknown

I love that it’s not just the sound of the story being read – he moves him mouth too, like he’s truly reading it. And it’s so cute how he kind of sways back and forth while he reads. All of the details on this bear are well done – very well made, super soft, and has held up perfectly through 3 full weeks so far of “Toddler Love” – which can be a little rough :) He’s 12 inches tall, runs on 3 AA batteries that are super easy to install and change, and retails for $29.99 on CuddleBarn.com.

Cuddle Barn

“A teddy is a cuddle with paws at the end.” – Gill Davies

Now one of you can WIN a Cuddle Barn Storytime Teddie of your own! This will be a short giveaway – meaning you have great odds to win, so be sure to come back each day for your daily bonus entries. Use the easy peasy Rafflecopter form to enter – Good Luck, and Happy Holidays!

More High-Quality Play Kitchens at Great Deals

When shopping for kids toys, gear, and accessories, it’s tough to find things that blend in with the look and style of our home. I don’t want my house to look like a daycare when you walk in the door – But I don’t want to hide away all of the fun toys and playsets either. Here are a couple more great choices that would be a perfectly chic fit in any families kitchen:

  1. KidKraft Vintage Kitchen – This is so sleek and modern – it doesn’t scream “kids!!”, so it’s right at home in any kitchen. Love the details, and the clean and stylish all-white look.
  2. Red Retro Kitchen – This kids play kitchen is SO fun! Again, it’s very modern, and totally cool. I love kids toys – but I love to find things that look great, so that I can make them a part of our home’s decor, instead of just hiding them away in a playroom.
  3. KidKraft Tasty Treats Pretend Food Play – Such a great value! 125 pieces of fun play foods and accessories, for under $20 bucks – perfect.
  4. Mom and Me Cookbook – This is so adorable. Abby and I have matching aprons that we use when we cook together, and love trying recipes from this book. {Did you see that one of our recipes is featured in the new Baby Brezza Cookbook ? I was so excited to see our pictures in there!}

I’d love to hear from you guys – what’s your favorite play kitchen for kids? Do you struggle with finding great kids toys that blend into with your home design too, or do you keep things out of sight in a playroom? Do you have any great product suggestions for me to check out?? Leave me some comments!

Party Time with Thomas & Friends! #Megabloksparty

Thomas Mega Bloks

‘Play is the highest form of research.’ – Albert Einstein

Thomas & Friends + Mega Bloks = Another super fun event from MommyParties! We received a ton of awesome stuff to host a great party for the kiddo’s, their friends, and my mommy friends too. We’ve actually never played with any of the Mega Bloks sets before, so I was super excited to check ’em out – And I’m definitely impressed! I had pictures Mega Bloks as more of a “Little Kid” type toy – but these were fun for ALL of the kids, from 16 months to 9 years old. I love how easy it was for the kids to follow the directions, and they loved that they could create the set on their own. Keep reading to learn more about these super cool toys, plus some ideas you can use for your own party.

Playing with toy train set

‘Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.’ – Kay Redfield Jamison

Each of the kids got to pick a new toy – They could choose from Mega Bloks Diesel Works Set, or the Mega Bloks Thomas Set – both are super cool. The box that they blocks are in opens up, and flips over, to become a little ramp for the train to cruise down… And Abby thought this was the COOLEST thing ever! She says, “Chooo Chooo!” and runs to chase it after it rolls away. The bigger kids set theirs all up in a row, and had races to see who’s train could go the farthest. The moms all loved that this was a great travel set.

Thomas & Friends Mega Bloks set

“The most effective kind of education is that a child should play amongst lovely things.” – Plato

We also got one “Big” set for the kids to check out – Megabloks “Day at the Dieselworks” – and it was definitely a hit with both the kids and the moms. While lego sets can be a challenge even for some of the bigger kiddo’s, this Mega Bloks set was perfect – the older boys helped to guide the little one’s, and while they could put the whole thing together without any help from the grown up’s, it was just challenging enough to make them feel really accomplished when they finished it!

Thomas Mega Bloks toy sets

“Make each day your masterpiece.” – John Wooden

Another thing I thought was pretty cool about these toy sets is that they all fit together. So, if you’re little one is going to a playdate, they can bring along one of the smaller toy sets, and it’ll hook right up to the bigger toy sets, as you see in the picture. This would be a great way to set up a Mommy Group playdate, or birthday party… Have each of the kids bring their own Thomas toys in a smaller travel case set, and they can all hook ’em up to play together! Here are a few other ideas you can use to host your own party:

Thomas-Inspired Snack ideas:

  • Chugga, Chugga, Choo-Choo Chocolate Cups: We made these Dirt & Worm style, which you’ve probably made before. Very simple, but always entertaining – especially if you’ve got little boys at the party!
  • Railway Trail Mix: Any type of Chex Mix would work great for this – find a ton of different varieties here: Chex Mix Recipes.
  • Steamin’ Engine Fuel Punch: Pour 2 64-oz. bottles of fruit punch into a big bowl. Add a 16-oz. can of frozen OJ, and stir until it’s mostly melted. Then add half of a 64-oz bottle of pineapple juice. Right before the party, add in 2 bottles of ginger ale, add ice and some sliced oranges on top – stir and enjoy!

“It is in playing, and only in playing, that the child is able to be creative and to use the whole personality, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self.” – D.W. Winnicott

Learn, Create, and Share Party!

LeapFrog Educational ToysWe Hosted a LeapFrog Party!

When you think of toys for kids that are both educational and super fun, one of the first names that comes to just about everyone’s mind is LeapFrog, right? LeapFrog makes some of the highest quality electronic toys for kids, is always innovative with new games, app’s, and products, and always finds that perfect combination of learning and entertainment. Love LeapFrog products.

Learn, Create, and Share Party!

As  a member of MomSelect, I got the super-duper amazing opportunity to try out a bunch of great new products from LeapFrog – and share them with some of my other favorite families! Abby has the LeapFrog My Pal Violet, the super cute plush dog that sings songs and plays games, and it’s one of her favorites. The boys have played with the LeapFrog Leapster Explorer before, but had never gotten to use a LeapPad – and myohmy, were they over-the-top excited to check it out!! It was definitely the most popular toy with the older boys, and they had a blast recording videos on it – and of course the videos were all just ridiculous little boy stuff, like weird dancing, wrestling matches, and gross faces. Sheesh.

Our Party

We were so, so, SO excited to open up the big box of LeapFrog products when they arrived on our front porch. And we were NOT disappointed! Check out all of the amazingly fun – and incredibly educational! – products that were in the huge package we received from LeapFrog for our party, and learn more about them. I had a really wide range of ages of kids for this party – the youngest was 15 months, and the oldest was 9, and every single one of them had fun with these toys! They all seem super durable, they are all the kind of toy that you feel good about kids playing with, and they all brought out a ton of smiles from the kids. What more can you ask for in a toy, right??

What we loved:

  • LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet – This is recommended for ages 4-9, but even Abby loves it. We like to use it at bedtime, so we can turn out the lights, snuggle up in some blankets, and check out her favorite ebooks. She just adores it. And like I mentioned, this bad boy has a built-in digital camera, video camera, and touchscreen. This post isn’t even long enough to explain to you how cool this thing is – I was seriously blown away.
  • LeapFrog TAG Reading System – I’ve been wanting to get one of these for the kids since last Christmas – and I was delighted to see that it totally exceeded my expectations! This is also recommended for ages 4-8. All of the kids thought that this was really cool – our little Kindergartner guy gets totally involved with it. He’s learning to read, and this gives him a ton of confidence! You can change the settings to either sound out the letters, or read the words – he loves trying to read it himself, and using the reader to see if he got it right. My older little guy is 8, and is a pretty advanced reader, so this didn’t hold his attention as much. But for any kiddo who’s in the beginning to mid stages of learning to read, this is amazing.
  • LeapFrog Tag World Map – This is my favorite! I think that this is just so cool… The kids use the Tag reader to discover the world and bring it to life. There are SO many different levels of play and learning with this – Abby love, love, LOVES looking for the animals to touch with the reader, so she can hear the sounds they make. She giggles and claps at the tiger and jaguar – so great to watch. The kids can learn the names of the countries, find kids in the other lands to tell them info like how to say Hello, learn about foods, music, and so much more. All of the kids were completely intrigued by this. It doesn’t come with a reader – you have to get that separately. But it is an amazing addition if you have the Tag reader already!

What do you think?

What is your families favorite LeapFrog product? Are you planning any LeapFrog purchases for the holidays? If so, make sure to sign up to get their email updates – LeapFrog.com – so you can get sales info and great coupons. Right now they’ve got an awesome special deal – Free Shipping on all orders over $60 bucks! Leave me some comments with your feedback on other LeapFrog toys – I’d love to get some additional books and games for the kids this Christmas, and want to hear your suggestions!
