Simple Routine to Brighten Your Family’s Smiles!

Tooth Brushing for Toddlers

Listerine Oral Care Challenge

Oral health is one of those things that you don’t think about a whole lot – Until there’s a problem. Things like cavities, and fillings, and gum disease are not just super painful, they can also be super expensive! I’m always looking for new “Solutions” – products, services, sites, and systems to simplify life, and make things better. When I heard about the Listerine Oral Care Challenge – it definitely sounded like something I wanted to check out!

How it works

The idea behind the challenge is simple – Start a routine of brushing, flossing, and rinsing twice a day for three weeks, and involve the whole family. Sounds easy enough, right? But once we committed to this, and started tracking it on the family calendar, I realized how often we used to skip a step or two. But this routine really is so simple, and so effective, that it’s a great addition to every families schedule!

Toothbrush, floss, and mouthwash

Awesome Products Make it Fun

To build some excitement for this challenge from Listerine, we were sent a big box of cool products – And with characters like Batman, Phineas and Ferb, and Barbie, these were a huge hit with the kids! {My favorite product? The Total Care Whitening Floss – totally different than any other floss I’ve ever tried. Super cool} So, armed with new brushes, fun rinse products, new floss, and great attitudes – We started the challenge 3 weeks ago. I’m happy to report that it was a total success!

Brighten Your Family’s Smiles!

Abby is almost 18 months, and her little teeth are filling it fast. She LOVES brushing her teeth – and as you can see in the picture above, she will steal any toothbrush she finds in the house, and wander around brushing!! We just upgraded her from her Baby Banana Toothbrush, to a new “Big Girl” Barbie toothbrush from Reach. She loves it – and I love that she makes it so easy to brush those little teeth! The boys thought it was super cool to use the Smart Rinse Mouthwash – since it actually tints the particles and germs in your mouth, so you see “proof” of it working in the sink after rinsing. And I’m happy that this challenge made brushing, flossing, and rinsing into a FUN new habit for us all!

Take the Challenge with Your Family

Use those products to brush, floss, and rinse twice a day for three weeks – It’s that easy!

Financial Planning for Single Parents

Stay at home mom becomes work at home mom

Term Life Insurance: What Single Parents Shouldn’t Be Without!

Life insurance serves to replace your income in the event of your death, so that your spouse or children are able to survive financially in the wake of your passing. Life insurance is especially important for people who are the main moneymakers in the family, especially those with young dependents.

Why, then, are single parents less likely to carry life insurance? A recent study suggests that nearly 70 percent of single parents do not have a life insurance policy, despite being the sole source of income for their young children. Worse yet, the study also determined that the more children a parent has, the less likely she or he would be to carry life insurance.

Why Don’t Single Parents Carry Insurance?

Most uninsured parents have chosen to forego insurance costs so they can use that money on other things, like paying off debts. With the economy as troubled as it is, many people are choosing to put every penny that they can into savings or debt; other people need to spend everything that they make just to break even.

Some parents may also be relying on alternate sources of income, like child support or Social Security survivor benefits. Unfortunately, these benefits aren’t a sure bet. The only way to guarantee that your children will be covered after your death is by preparing for that inevitability yourself.

Parents Need Insurance

Some groups of people don’t need life insurance. Bachelors with no dependents, for example, don’t need life insurance. Elderly people whose children are already grown and independent also do not need insurance. People who are responsible for the lives of dependents, however, always need insurance.

Many single parents don’t want to think about the possibility that they may die unexpectedly. The likelihood is that you will live a long time and your insurance will be unnecessary. In the event that you are in an unexpected accident, however, knowing that your kids have financial security is well worth the investment.

What to Consider when Buying Life Insurance

Term life insurance is cheaper than ever before. Essentially, a term life insurance policy covers you for the pre-specified term, like 10, 25 or 30 years. If you die any time during that term, your beneficiaries will receive the full amount of the policy. If you survive to the end of the term, you will need to purchase a new policy. It is important to compare term life insurance among different companies to make sure you get the most affordable policy available.

Before buying insurance, you should determine how much coverage you need. Usually, you will want to purchase six to 10 times your yearly salary in insurance. You may also want a larger policy if you want money to go toward paying off your mortgage or providing a college fund for your children.

Bear in mind, however, that if you survive your insurance term, you will receive none of the benefits of your policy. You might be better off buying the minimum of life insurance you need in a term policy and investing the rest in an interest-bearing account.

Christmas Lights Make Everything More Beautiful – #SearsRealCheer #CBias

Outdoor Christmas Decor

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” – Norman Vincent Peale

Christmas is my favorite time of year… I’m sure you may have noticed :) And one of our favorite things is decorating the house – inside and out! This is the first year in our new house, so we had to buy new lights and fun stuff for decorating – {You can see our Christmas Lights Shopping Trip at Sears here} – And I love all of the new lights that we got! Some of our decorations are super old – we’ve used them since I was a little girl. They’re getting kind of beat-up, but they bring back so many happy memories…

Lighted Nutcracker

“The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree:  the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.” –Burton Hillis

This lighted nutcracker is one of those older decorations – We’ve got a couple big blue ones that have always guarded our doorways, at every house I’ve lived in, since I was about 5 years old.

“Christmas is for children. But it is for grown-ups too. Even if it is a headache, a chore, and nightmare, it is a period of necessary defrosting of chill and hide-bound hearts.” – Lenora Mattingly Weber

This team of smaller red ones usually line the walkways – But this year, since we picked up new lighted snowmen for the walkway, these soldiers stood guard along the house instead. They still make me smile, after all of these years.

“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” – Charles Dickens

These are those adorable lighted snowmen I told you about – We bought them at Sears, and they might still be available. They have a few other choices, and I really wanted the snowflakes – But Abby chose these, and she’s the boss. I wish I could have gotten a better picture that could show you how fun they are – they light up and change colors, and are just super fun. My favorite lighting purchase in years. {There’s a great coupon code too – Use 5SCHEER on Sears Real Cheer to save $5 bucks off a $50 purchase!}

“When we recall Christmas past, we usually find that the simplest things – not the great occasions – give off the greatest glow of happiness.” – Bob Hope

Here’s a peek at the front of the property – we’ve got a lighted Santa and Reindeer that move – Abby claps and giggles and says “Gooooo!” when she comes out to see them. Priceless. We’ve got two big lighted Snowmen that we’ve had since I was a kid – one of them lost his little carrot nose, so we made him a new one. You don’t just throw out a snowman, right? The whole property is lined with lights, garlands, and bright, cheery red bows.

“Remember, if Christmas isn’t found in your heart, you won’t find it under a tree.” – Charlotte Carpenter

We decided to do icicle lights all along the roof this year – and we bought out the entire shelf of them at Sears! They look so pretty at night. We got the lighted snowflakes for the windows there too – the boys love having them on at night – like big cheerful night lights. We also got a ton of the energy-efficient colored lights for all of our trees – hopefully they’ll help lower our always-huge December power bill! Not many of our neighbors have lights up – and every day when I walk to the corner where the mailboxes are, everyone tells me how much they love seeing our house at night. I’m glad that we can add a little bit of holiday cheer to the neighborhood…

“From Home to home, and heart to heart, from one place to another. The warmth and joy of Christmas, brings us closer to each other.” – Emily Matthews

Happy Holidays – whatever you celebrate – to you and your families!

The Right Relief for the Real Problem – Share Solutions & Enter to Win!

Advil Congestion Relief

“What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?” – George Eliot

Advil Congestion is putting a putting a twist on its tagline – “The Right Relief for the Real Problem,” and providing literal relief in congested places across the U.S. from undersupplied schools, congested traffic lanes, and more. I love to see companies use the power that they have to do great things – and it’s amazing what their donations are doing to improve local communities! Learn how they helped Chicago get “The Right Relief” for their winter congestion problems –

“For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people’s love and concern for each other.” – Millard Fuller

What type of change would you like to see in your own community? Where is your communities congestion? In my town, I’d have to say that one of the biggest problems is fear. That fear causes congestion when it keeps people from moving forward, dreaming big, and actually doing new things. It’s the fear of change, which causes people to vote down and resist new ideas. The fear of spending and investing, the fear or things that are different, the fear that something ‘won’t work’. I would love to see Advil find a way to bring a new enthusiasm to my city – to encourage the people who are dreaming big to keep pushing for change, to break through that congestion of uncertainty, and make our community a brighter place! There are so many good things in my town, and we need to keep building on them, and motivate the whole community to work together to bring some new ideas to life. Just like a winter cold gets your head and chest all stuffed up, a fear of something different can get a city all stuffed up too!

Want Great Family Photos? Read this!

“Photography is the beauty of life, captured.” – Tara Chisholm

I told you guys about my passion for family photos in this post – Don’t let your digital memories become distant memories – earlier in the week. Capturing those special family moments is always important – but especially so during the holidays! So, to help you get some new favorite photos of your family this season, I’m excited to share some tips from one of my favorite photographers – the totally amazing Amber Miller, of Amber Miller Photography!

“A photograph is the pause button of life.” – Ty Holland

Don’t rush children! Most kids are uneasy around strangers, especially strangers who are holding a large camera with a bright flash in their face, screaming “say cheese”. In my experience, the session goes much more smoothly if the child is comfortable and able to be themselves! I always ask children that I’m photographing what their favorite food is, who their favorite character is, their favorite song or tv show. For example, at a session last week I was having a hard time making a 2 year old laugh, I danced, made funny faces, used squeeky toys and nothing was working. I found out from mommy that he LOVES breadsticks from the Olive Garden. All I had to do was say “breadsticks” and he cracked up! I got some wonderful shots after that!

Be Patient! Children don’t want to be rushed or scolded into smiling. I understand that sometimes we as parents, just want to get those memories and it’s frustrating when children don’t want to cooperate. A great thing for parents to do before a session is to offer a treat for good behavior and cooperation during their session. For example: “Bobby, if you listen to the nice lady and smile really big for your pictures, I will take you to get an ice cream when we’re finished” That works beautifully!

Most important – GET PHOTOS TAKEN! “Everyone has excuses about why they want to wait to get them done, whether it’s losing weight, or waiting for their hair to grow longer, etc…photos are such precious memories! Even if you aren’t 100% happy with the way you look, you should get them done just so your children have something to remember just how you looked at that stage in their life. Photos are precious memories, even when our loved ones are gone. Stop hesitating! Do it, you’ll be happy you did!”

“A good snapshot stops a moment from running away.” – Eudora Welty

If you’re a local reader – you definitely need to check out Amber Miller Photography! She is just the sweetest thing, with loads of patience – and her photos are totally gorgeous. When we showed up for our holiday photo shoot, poor Abby had a terrible cold – a sticky, runny nose, and red, watery eyes – but Amber did such a great job of capturing her character! Check out some of her work on Facebook –

Amber Miller on Facebook – “Like” for fun photos, updates, promotions, and more!

Are you already a fan of hers? Share some comments – what was your favorite part of the shoot? – Mine was that she is so great with kids. Abby did NOT want to cooperate at all, but Amber was a total sweetie, and helped Abby have fun so we could get a few good pics!

Love these tips?

Feel free to stop by Amber Miller Photography and leave her a comment with a big THANK YOU for sharing some fun tips here – she’d love to hear from you!
