How Walgreens Works to Protect Your Choice of Pharmacy

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

What is going on? – As in all disputes like this, there is a lot of information to read through to get to the bottom of the controversy. You can read more here – Walgreens and Express Script – but I’ll break it all down into the basics of what’s happening, how it can affect you and your family, and what you can do about it.

Unsuccessful Negotiations

Express Script is a middleman, connecting the pharmacies that provide health care service with the employers and health plans that pay for medications. Over the past year, Walgreens has been in negotiations with Express Script to continue their contract – but those negotiations have failed. Even though Walgreens offered to keep rates flat, at their current level, Express script insisted that Walgreens slash their reimbursement rates to levels below the industry average, and allow Express Scripts total control over which prescription were considered brand or generic. Another point of disagreement was that Express Scripts wants patients to ONLY be allowed to purchase money-saving 90 day prescriptions through their own mail-order program, and never though their local, trusted pharmacy. Walgreens felt that the demands were unfair, which caused Express Scripts to terminate their agreement.

What does this mean for you?

This means that if your prescriptions are covered by Express Script, you may no longer be able to fill them at your convenient local Walgreens pharmacy. This is putting a lot of stress and hardship onto patients – and Express Script themselves admit that excluding Walgreens like this will NOT lead to any decrease in prices for consumers. So – that makes it clear that this is about profits for Express Script, not about protecting their customers. In fact, Express Script’s profits have been growing at rates higher than both their peers AND Walgreens. When the middleman is seeing more gains than any of the parties that they’re serving – clearly the relationship is out of balance!

How to know if you are affected

No one wants a surprise when they show up at the pharmacy and learn that their insurance isn’t going to fill their families prescription! To find out if you are affected by these changes, find your insurance card, flip it over, and see if Express Script is mentioned on the back. If so, you may be impacted by this. The best way to know for sure though is to stop by, or call, your local pharmacy.

Walgreens Fills One Out of Five Prescriptions in the U.S.

In our family, we have used the same local pharmacy for over 20 years. I know the pharmacists there, they know my family and medical history, and I trust them to take care of me, and give me good advice. Our first Walgreens just opened in my town about a year ago – but I know that there are so many people who have already moved their prescriptions here, since they offer 24 hour service and even drive-though pharmacies, which you really appreciate when you have a sick kiddo. Most people really build a relationship with their pharmacy – so Walgreens knows that this change is going to be stressful for many of it’s customers!

What Walgreens is doing to help

To help make this transition easier for families affected by the changes, Walgreens is doing everything that it can to help customers continue to use their favorite Walgreens pharmacy, or take care of them if they’re forced to transfer their prescriptions to another pharmacy. They have increased staff to ensure that the increase in prescriptions can be transferred quickly and seamlessly. They’re also offering a big discount on joining the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. When you join the savings club during this special January promotion, you pay only $5 for you, or $10 for an annual family membership. The savings club membership provides savings on more than 8,000 brand name, plus ALL generic prescriptions. Walgreens carries more than 400 generics, and they’re available with a three-month supply for less than $1 a week. The regular annual membership is $20 for an individual, and $35 for a family – so Walgreens is offering a significant savings to it’s loyal customers this month.

What You Might Not Know About Reviewer’s Retreat, 2012

Reviewers Retreat

“The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.” – Arthur C. Clarke

I love to challenge myself. And this is a good trait to have when you are your own boss – I have to be disciplined enough to meet deadlines, even if I have to do them at 2 am in my pajamas. I have to be motivated enough to get up again at 6 am, so I can get some work done while the baby sleeps. I’m the receptionist, the bookkeeper, the reporter, the editor, the marketer – and of course, the mommy. But, when you challenge yourself, and set your own goals, and work hard to achieve them – It feels amazing to know that you accomplished great things, and you did it yourself.

“Every artist was first an amateur.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I started my blogging adventure in March of 2011 – so I haven’t even made it to my One Year Blogiversary yet. My story of how I started this site earned me a place as a winner in the StartUp Nation’s Home-Based 100 – and you can learn more about me and my story by reading my About Me page. During the 10 months that I’ve been building and growing this site, I have put hundreds of hours into learning as much as I can about blogging, and social media, and marketing, and a million other things. I’ve reached out and made amazing connections with new blogging friends. And I can’t WAIT to share what I have learned with some NEW blogging friends – As a speaker at this summer’s Reviewer’s Retreat 2012! Yep – that’s the big news that you might not have heard yet…. I am so super-duper excited about this. {Can you tell?}

review blog conference

“Success does not consist in never making blunders, but in never making the same one a second time.” – Josh Billings

I’ll be speaking at a session for “Undergraduates” {meaning, newer bloggers} called, “Growing Your Audience”, with Rob Babiak, Melinda Babiak. We’ll be talking about – “So you created a fabulous site and are ready to put out the welcome mat, but where are your visitors? Learn how to promote yourself in order to grow your followers, fans and overall readership!” – I am by no means an expert blogger. But I have learned so much, and am incredibly excited to share my mistakes AND my successes, so that you can learn from both.

“No great man ever complains of want of opportunities.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you’re ready to take your blogging to the next level – Make some amazing connections with both bloggers and brands, learn from amazing people like Amy Bellgardt at Mom Spark Media, and just have a blast – {this event is at the Great Wolf Lodge and Waterpark!} – then this conference is a must for you.

Reviewer’s Retreat is first conference geared specifically toward the issues and challenges faced by bloggers in the product review genre, a topic that is lacking from most conference agendas. Review bloggers, those who conduct product and resource reviews on their site, will converge to take part in sessions on a variety of topics including brand-blogger relations, website design, perfecting the pitch, statistics, photography and more.  This brand-friendly conference welcomes company and agency representatives as building and strengthening relationships between bloggers and brands is one of the conference’s primary goals.”

Building a Better Blog in 2012 – Chapter 4: Understanding Your Blog as a Product

Building our blogs in 2012

“Blogging is hard because of the grind required to stay interesting and relevant.” – Sufia Tippu

I’ve partnered with a group of bloggers to follow the advice from the super duper amazing guys at Problogger, to follow the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog book together – And I am SUPER excited to take on this challenge! {Use the code FBWO33 at checkout to get $10 off!} To make sure we all have a great foundation to build on, we’re going through the Guide to Your First Week of Blogging book first – {Click here to view more details} – If you’d like to follow along with us – join the linky at the bottom of this post, and I’ll make sure to invite you into our fun Facebook group too!

Chapter 4: Understanding Your Blog as a Product

For this first series, I’m following along by using Misty’s notes, from CEO of Me, Inc. – Read her Chapter 4 notes too, if you want to get a great overview of what the book covered. After reading Misty’s notes, I realize that her and I really are so much alike – Like her, I too LOVE marketing and branding. I can already tell that this chapter is going to be a fun one….

“Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.” – Steve Shearer

Just like a crafter is selling their handmade jewelry, or a baker is selling amazingly delicious cupcakes – You’re selling yourself, and your content. Maybe you’re not actually charging per piece, the way a crafter or a baker does. But if you want your blog to be your business, and you intend to earn an income from it, then you must think of it in a more businesslike way. The systems that have been covered in the chapters so far help set you up with a plan for your business – If you’ve been following along, you know have a checklist system to use with each post, a folder packed with creative post ideas, and an editorial calendar with scheduled posts set up. That is a great basic foundation to start building on, right?

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” – Robert Collier

To really boost your business, you need to be able to reach people. And one of the most important first impressions that people have is when reading your headlines. If someone is scrolling through their Twitter stream – What is going to make them stop and choose YOUR post to click on? Learning to write more powerful headlines is on my list of blogging to-do’s this year, and I absolutely LOVE Darren’s exercise in this video – Check it out…

“A blog is merely a tool that lets you do anything from change the world to share your shopping list.” – Unknown

Your blog content is totally unique – just like you. There really is no wrong or right – just what makes YOU excited, and what you’re passionate about. Make sure that those posts you put so much effort into creating actually get read by taking the time to learn how to write effective headlines. {And check out another cool exercise from Darren that uses magazines to help you become a better blogger.} If your blog is your product, make sure that your content is good enough to make people want to buy into it – Meaning, subscribe to your posts, follow you on social media, and become the kind of involved readers that we’re all wanting to connect with.

Planning Your Content

Ok, so now you’ve got an idea folder filled with future posts, the tools to write great headlines to help people find those posts, and a calendar for your blog all set up. Well, just like a magazine posts different types of topics, so should you. Make sure as you continue to fill your blogging calendar with scheduled posts, that you have a good mix of different types of content – Some short, some longer and more in-depth. Make sure to post about different angles of your topic – If you write about recipes, make sure you share a good mix of different types, and not 6 days in a row of dinner recipes featuring chicken – know what I mean?

“Breathe. Know that the Internet has no eraser.” – Liz Strauss

As your content improves, so will your traffic. People will begin to be drawn in by your totally compelling headlines, intrigued by the genius posts that you’ve put together – {yes, a post about your toddlers finger painting CAN be the most intriguing article ever written :)} – and will tell all of their friends that they simply MUST visit this amazing new blog that they’ve found. That’s your goal, and that’s great. But – never get to a point where you think your work is over. Continue to network with others, find new connections, meet new faces. And a great way to do this is by sharing the content of other bloggers.

So today, end this chapter by stopping by a few of your favorite blogs – if you see a post that you like, and you think your readers would be interested too, share it!

This accomplishes a few things – The blogger who see’s that you shared her link on Facebook will be flattered, and may return the favor. Your readers will appreciate that you share great content that’s relevant to them – even when it’s not your own. And maybe you’ll build a little bit of a connection to that other writer, that could lead to something cool down the road. There is a lot of negativity to be found on the web – so try to add something positive each day.

Wrapping it up

  • Want to read more about this week long challenge, and follow the chapters too? You can buy the First Week of Blogging ebook here – or for an abbreviated version, check out Misty’s notes for each chapter so far.

Stumble Tumble Tuesday! – 1/10

Stumble Tumble Tuesday

Welcome to Stumble Tumble Tuesday hosted by Acting Balanced, Sunshine and Sippy Cups and Wyoming Girl Turned Coastie Wife! The goal of this hop is to use Stumble Upon to help you promote your blog posts and get more traffic.

Even if you think you are stumbling correctly, please read this post on how to check and see if your stumble was successful. Some stumbles aren’t showing up, thanks!

To take part is simple.

  1. Add a link to a blog post that you would like people to stumble to the linky below. It *must* be a link to an actual post and NOT your main site. Please do not list giveaways.
  2. Stumble as many other posts as you care to, check to make sure that your stumble went through by clicking on the “Info” icon. Then leave a comment on their post saying, “I stumbled you, my post is _____(add link)”. The great thing about Stumble Upon is that it is fast and easy to do with the Stumble Upon toolbar. PLEASE DO NOT ADD YOUR LINK IF YOU AREN’T GOING TO STUMBLE ANY POSTS.
  3. Remember LINK TO AN ACTUAL POST, NOT YOUR MAIN SITE.

Secret to Saving on Baby Basics: Learn to Maximize Amazon Savings

Baby Bargain Mondays with Amazon Mom

If you have to buy diapers, wipes, or formula in your local store, I definitely recommend using a site like Planning Family to stock up printable baby coupons, or subscribe to one of the free baby magazines like American Baby, to get more clipped coupons. But – the BEST way to save money on baby basics is by signing up for an Amazon Mom account, and taking advantage of the Subscribe and Save options.

What is Amazon Mom?

Amazon Mom is a FREE account on Amazon.com – And it gets you FREE 2-Day Amazon Prime Shipping on your purchases! How cool is that, right? Here’s how to sign up for an account:

  • Go to Amazon.com, and click on “Your Account” on the top right side.
  • Scroll down to the section called “Settings” – Then look for the option to enroll in Amazon Mom Membership.
  • When you click that, you go to a screen with a few basic questions – then bam! You are set up with a new Amazon Mom account – Easy peasy.
{Ok – UPDATE ALERT!!! – I’m being told that there is currently a wait list to get into the Amazon Mom program. This is SUPER weird, since it’s a membership – not something that can “run out”, you know? But – It’s definitely worth signing up for, and I hope none of you have to wait very long – it’s SUCH an awesome way to save. If you are able to sign up without a wait list, let me know when it changes! Thank you to the awesome ladies who informed me of this new change!!}

Subscribe and Save

On many items like Diapers, wipes, and formula – You’ll see the regular option to purchase, then an option to “subscribe and save” right underneath of that. When you subscribe, you set up an automated shipment of that product – but you get it at a big discount! So, if you know that you go through 3 packages of baby wipes a month, you set up a new 12 pack shipment to arrive every 4 months. AND – you can cancel that shipment anytime, with no penalties – it’s super simple.

Here’s an example of the savings:

You need diapers, and maybe you’re using the Gifts to Grow rewards program, so you buy the Pampers Baby Dry Diapers Economy Pack. It’s always cheaper to buy diapers in bulk – This package of 192 is only $47 dollars, which is .25 per diaper. Not bad, but we can do better!

  • First, switch from One-Time Delivery to Subscribe and Save – It brings the cost of the diapers down to $37.75 – a savings of 20%, bringing the diapers down to only .20 cents per diaper.
  • Next – you’ll often find coupons after you sign up for Amazon Mom – Like this one on the Pampers: “Save $1.00 with this Coupon – Clip this coupon to save $1.00 on this product when you buy from Amazon.com.”
  • Click the button to “Clip” that coupon – You just saved another dollar!

Using this great Amazon feature saves you time, since you don’t have to keep running out to the store to buy more diapers, saves you a ton of money, and if you buy Pampers – the points from these big boxes of diapers earn you FREE Shutterfly Photo Packages with Pampers Gifts to Grow. You can’t get much better than that, right?

Baby Bargain Mondays

Every Monday is Baby Bargain Monday on Amazon – with loads of great deals on baby stuff like cribs, car seats, and toys – so it’s a great time to shop. Make sure to look for the “Lightning Deals” on baby goods every Monday too – You’ll find some amazing prices.

Free Amazon Credits

When you use sites like Swagbucks, MySurvey, or MyView, you can cash in and build up a ton of free Amazon Gift Card credits too – which can make some of these awesome deals totally free! I have bought almost all of Abby’s diapers and wipes on Amazon, and most of her toys too – and I’ve paid cash for less than half of that. Learning how to maximize your Amazon savings is the BEST way I have found to save money on baby basics.

Have a friend who would love this? Make sure to Stumble, Tweet, or Share it to Facebook!

Mom Bloggers for Social Good – #socialgoodmoms

Announcing the Official Launch of Mom Bloggers for Social Good

I am incredibly proud to be a founding member of Mom Bloggers for Social Good – and extremely excited to announce that they’ve just launched the website and social media sites. It is so important to me to use the voice that I have here on this site to give back, and I can’t wait to see how this group of amazing women bloggers comes together to promote some amazing causes.

“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.” – Rajneesh

This is my very favorite quote of all time. When we become mothers, a new place grows in our hearts – who would have ever believed how much love you could feel for this tiny person? It’s completely life-changing. You also grow another new part in your heart – You suddenly have so much love for every other mother and child in the world. Every story of a child abused, neglected, or unable to have the basics that they need to live happily – those pull at that new place in your heart, and you feel driven to do something to help them. My heart breaks to imagine mothers in some parts of the world who have no food or medicine for a sick baby, who can’t send their daughters to school, who struggle just to provide clean water to their families.

“Never Doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

I’ve always been the type of person who wanted to “save the world” – and while that might be a bit out of my reach, I’m excited to at least have the opportunity to make a small difference. Connect with Mom Bloggers for Social Good – and spread the word:
