Recently Wayfair.com and Hometalk partnered up to put together a super-duper-fun challenge: 25 bloggers each got to choose from one of three Wayfair products – a mirror, a lampshade, or a bookcase. Then, we each had to create a plan to make-over our product choice to fit into one of this spring’s hottest trends – Geometric pattern, incorporating rope, or black & white. Ready to see what product I chose to give a little spring DIY makeover? Check it out…
Wayfair Mirror DIY Makeover Challenge
This is the before and after on my piece – Love it! It’s seriously the absolute perfect piece for that part of the bedroom. If you’ve been following the very sloooooow Master Bedroom remodeling project that we’ve been working on, then you know that choosing the black & white trend was an obvious choice for me. {If you haven’t followed along, you can see our original plan for the re-do here. The only change is that she now has her own playroom, and I have an office, since my brother and the kiddos moved out. But the theme and DIY ideas are still the same – and we’re making BIG progress, finally.} We recently got a whole new set of bedroom furniture, and rearranged everything in the room. {Want to check out our plans?}
The “Before” Piece
I lovely this lovely piece I chose… A white wall mirror with a shelf. I had a little empty space on the wall just begging for something new and fun – so this mirror had a perfect home before I even got started! This super gorgeous white mirror was so pretty on it’s own – so clean, fresh, and new – that it was almost hard to “defile” it with a makeover. But you know I gotta do it. So… Here we go!
Step One: Paint the frame
So, step one is pretty easy peasy… I used a black acrylic paint, two coats, and painted the whole frame a slightly glossy finish. Super simple, super cheap – the paint cost me about $2 for the two little bottles. I used a big assortment of brushes, since I’d forgotten to pick up masking tape to cover the mirror, and I’d have to be super careful painting those little inside edges. Tip: Paint comes off of a mirror super easily by scraping with a razor blade.
Step Two: Stencil a Quote
Ok – this was a disaster of a step. My original idea was to do the quote in frosted glass. We cut a stencil for the quote I wanted from vinyl {Mike runs a business here: Taboo Designs, so he makes all of my project materials.} So we put it on the mirror, took it outside, sprayed it with a couple coats… Then it RAINED. Ugh. Totally messed up the paint. So we had to scrape it all off and start over. Plan B: Have Mike cut my quote out of vinyl. He did, and I’m totally in LOVE with the way it came out.
Step 3: Troubleshooting
Next, I ran into another problem. I realized that even though I had carefully painted the frame right up to the edge of the mirror, it still reflected bits of the white wood underneath {see it in the first photo?}. Eeek. I couldn’t take the mirror out {that’s above my skill level, lol} so I had to figure out a solution quick. So, I pulled out a bundle of black and white ribbons and cords… Found a skinny textured silver cording that worked perfectly – so I just used some simple glue to carefully stick it on all along the inside edge between the wood and mirror. Worked like a charm! And – the ribbon inspired another idea too…
Step Four: Ribbon trim
I love this! I used a pretty black and white ribbon to trim all around the outside edge of the mirror. It matches perfectly in the bedroom – the print on my bedding is really similar to this pattern. I wanted something simple and clean for this project – this works perfectly. It’s not too busy, but gives a little pop of surprise when you notice it. Love. Ready for the final reveal? Drum roll please….
Ta-Da! Mirror Makeover Challenge is complete!
This mirror has such great lines, and is incredibly well made. The new darker color makes it contrast well in the bedroom, against my grey walls. I LOVE that it gives me a pretty spot to put some of the succulents that I just planted into jars over the weekend – and how fun are those little black & white ribbons on them? Plus, the message on it a super-inspiring thing to wake up to each morning. It only took a few hours of work, and totally makes me smile. Let’s take one more little look…
Close up view
Here’s a little look close-up – so you can see the pretty trims that we used to jazz this piece up a bit. The ribbon is just perfect, and I love the way that the simple silver cord cleaned up the look on the inside of the frame. The little ribbons add perfectly to the black & white theme too. I couldn’t be happier with the way that this came out – Hope you enjoyed it too!
