Giving back has always been really important to me. As a little girl, I grew up very poor. My dad got really sick, and my mom was raising 4 kids under the age of 6. We relied on help from our community to get through those years – which made me realize how much that help can matter to someone in need. As I’ve become a mom myself, I better appreciate how hard it must have been for my mother back then – so it’s important to me to give back when I can, to support other mothers with families in need.
“Be the change that you want to see in the world.” – Mahatma Ghandi
Growing up with very little makes me very appreciative of what I have now. And donating extra food, clothing, and toys to organizations in our community who get them to families who need it helps me remember how lucky I am. So I want to pass that on to my daughter, so that she grows up with compassion and empathy for others too. She’s only 19 months old, so she is too young to fully understand these concepts – but we still include her in our volunteering campaigns, so she can grow up surrounded by great people doing good things. And she is already just the sweetest little giver – if she has a cookie, she’ll share half with you. If she’s got a dolly to hug, she’ll bring one to you too. I love that she’s off to a good start… {hopefully that attitude of giving and sharing sticks around through the terrible 2’s, right?}
“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.” – Robert Louis Stevenson
One amazing group of great people doing good things is the team over at MembersUnited. They have put together a very unique way for families to donate money to some really wonderful causes – You choose your families donation amount, and then you get to vote for your favorite cause. Imagine American Idol – Each week you come back to check out the group of amazing charities to choose from, and vote for your favorite to help them make the next round. Reading about all of the different organizations can really start some great conversations with your kids, and help them realize that there are so many needs, and so many ways to help!
“One person giving $20 is a drop in the ocean. One thousand people giving $20 brings clean water to a village for a lifetime.” – Members Unite
Thinking about big world problems can sometimes feel overwhelming – what could I possibly do to make a difference? But, with a site like MembersUnite.com, you can really see how your dollars and your vote are making a difference!
For as little as $5 bucks a month – the price you’d pay for one latte, or one Happy Meal – you and your family can get started making a difference. My goal is to inspire 10 of you amazing readers to sign up, and get your families involved with this amazing organization! If you do join – leave a comment here to let me know which cause YOU chose to support!
This sounds like a great program, and an easy way to get involved. I love easy ways to give back, and this sounds like one..and any cause for kids touches me. :)
What a great way to give back!! I’ve had the opportunity to give new toys and clothes to children several times and the joy on their faces is priceless!!
Thanks Meagan! Your daughter is adorable and we at Members Unite hope you check back often to track the progress of your favorite projects ;)
Awwww, thank you so much Jen! I definitely will keep up with checking in – It’s such a fun way to get the whole family involved!
What a great program and a great way to give back! Because our middle child has autism that is where most of our resources go – to supporting research and programs that support him, but I know that opportunities like this are great too!
This sounds like such a great program! It’s a good reminder that we can make a difference by simply giving up a couple of lattes each month and giving back.
We love this site! It’s such a great way to get the kids involved with giving back!
This is such a sweet program! I’m going to read more about it and see what I can do!
