How do you keep the love alive through the years? #HopeSprings

“It’s not too late for anyone who truly wants it and is willing to try.” – ‪#HopeSprings…‬ I don’t talk about my relationship much on this site. Mike’s kind of a private guy, so I try not to spill the beans on that part of my life too often. {Ok, maybe I share some secrets with my bestie girlfriends sometimes, even though I tell him I don’t. But that’s different… Lol.} But, to celebrate the launch of a seriously great new movie coming out that I’m pretty excited about, I agreed to do a few posts sharing a little more about us. So here goes…

finding the spark in your relationship again - #HopeSprings

Our Story…

I met Mike at the completely wrong time. I was just coming out of a bad breakup, and had no interest whatsoever in meeting anyone new. I went out with a girlfriend for drinks one night, and while I honestly almost never notice guys while I’m out {seriously, I don’t. I’m vary wary of guys I don’t know. There are just too many creeps out there.} – I did notice Mike. He’d walked by a couple of times, and it surprised me that I did notice him. He was cute. Nice eyes. But again – not interested. Not a good time. So when my best friend who worked at the bar came over to bring me a drink, and told me that Mr. Nice Eyes had bought it for me – I was a little thrown for a loop. Should I say hi? Invite him to join us since he was sitting alone? No, I didn’t want to meet anyone, right? So I ignored him.

Change of plans leads to change in my life…

20 minutes later my best friend came back and told me to get my booty over there and at least say thank you – that I wasn’t allowed to be rude to one of her favorite customers, lol. So… I get my courage, head over and ask him to join us, and guess what he says? He says, “No thanks. I’m just going to eat my nachos.” Ugh. And this is why I don’t talk to boys!! Turns out he was just embarrassed I’d ignored him, and wanted to quickly eat his food and leave. Poor guy. And lucky for me, he didn’t… He came to chat. We exchanged numbers. After a couple of lunch dates, we exchanged the best kiss I’d ever had – and I knew, this was the guy I’d been looking for. After an almost-disasterous first meeting, we’ve been together for almost 7 years now, and a beautiful little girl joined us 2 years ago. Expect the unexpected, right??

Celebrating Good times and bad

During those 7 years together, we’ve had tons of ups and downs. So I totally relate to this new Hope Springs movie coming out. It’s about an older married couple who have reached that point where the passion has kind of died down, that spark has dimmed, and uncertainty kind of sets in… Check out the clip, and I bet a lot of you ladies – even if you’re in the earlier stages of your relationship, can still relate to some of this –

Showing appreciation

To keep your relationship rockin’ – and not rocky – I think it’s super important to show your appreciation to each other as often as possible. I know that for us, he thinks I don’t notice the things that he does – like keep the pool clean, the car running smooth, and the house in great condition. But while he might fix the squeaky door or a broken cabinet, I feel like he doesn’t notice that I vacuum the room behind that door, or clean the dishes that go into that cabinet. So, while we work on remembering to say thank you daily for those basic little tasks – we also make sure to use holidays and anniversaries as a chance to give a big thank you to each other for all that we each contribute. And what bigger thank you date is there than your anniversary, right? {It’s September 27th honey, if you forgot….} And since we’re talking about celebrating the ups and downs, I’ll share my best – and worst! – gifts I’ve gotten these past 7 years:

  • Worst Anniversary Gift: Um, the year he forgot! That would definitely be the worst, lol. I had a really thoughful gift for him {I won’t mention it here, since there’s no need to brag. Let’s just say it was definitely awesome…} and I’d waited all day for him to bring up our anniversary, give me my card or gift, or invite me to dinner. Something. Anything. By 9pm that night I realized that there was no big surprise coming – tossed his gift bag at him and went to bed with a pout. I of course then felt like a meanie pants in the morning when I woke up to flowers and a beautiful card to start my day… He’d gotten the date wrong, and thought it was the 28th. All was forgiven :)
  • Best Anniversary Gift Ever: The first year we had Abby. He planned a special day for all three of us as a new little family – we got some professional pics done, which I’d been really wanting, I got a mani-pedi, a wonderful dinner for the 3 of us at my favorite restaurant – just perfect. He’s still a keeper.

Share some comments with me – what are your best and worst anniversary memories? Do you relate to the movie clip – trying to keep that first-met first-love type passion going in your relationship after real life settles in? I want to hear your thoughts…. Who was #Brave today? I wanna hear all about it!

Disney/Pixar’s Brave – in Theaters Now!

OhmyHECK – it’s finally time. Yep, if you didn’t already know, today was opening day for Brave, the super fun new animated film from those geniuses at Disney and Pixar! I’ve given you a few sneak peeks before – like the hysterical clip Kilt: Are You Brave Enough to Wear One? And some yummy Scottish recipes inspired by the movie. And now, you can finally catch in your local theater!

Hoping to see it soon…

Unfortunately for us, we’ll have to wait a little longer to head to the theater and see it. As many of you already know, Abby had a series of seizures last Sunday – and we’re still being extra careful for a few more days, keeping a super close watch on her. We’ve tried to stay close to home as much as possible, just in case. But she seems to be doing much better now – so maybe next week I can take her out for a super-special mommy-daughter day. She’s never been to a movie at a theater yet – and I think a film with a sassy, tough, and totally brave little princess as the hero is the perfect movie for her first trip! Until then, I’ve had to settle for getting some inside scoops on the making of the movie – like this great interview with the voice of princess Merida, Kelly Macdonald – from my friend Angela at AboutaMom.com. {You can also enter to win a super adorable prize package from her too – filled with dolls and dress up gear!} But I know a lot of you probably DID get a chance to see it today – so I’d love to hear your opinions on it!

If you’ve seen the movie already  – I’d LOVE to hear your reviews! Leave some comments please :)

Epic Creativity from Tim Burton & Disney: #Frankenweenie

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie

Tim Burton is the Master of Epic Creativity

Ok, now I know that Tim Burton movies are a little different, and they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. But for us – they are some of our most-loved family movies. From my childhood favorite that’s been upgraded to 3D – The Nightmare Before Christmas, to me and Abby’s favorite story to watch together on a rainy day –  Coraline – Tim Burton makes the most unique, interesting, and totally imaginative films you’ll watch as a family. Love them. So – it’s no surprise that I’m pretty darn excited to hear about the new one coming out this fall – Frankenweenie!

About Frankenweenie from Tim Burton

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” was filmed in black and white and then rendered in 3D. The talented voice cast includes: Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder. Presented by Disney, “Frankenweenie” is directed by Tim Burton, and releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012.

Fun Frankenweenie Facts:

  • “Frankenweenie” is the first animated film that Tim Burton has directed for Disney.
  • When Tim Burton originally conceived the idea for “Frankenweenie,” he envisioned it as a full-length, stop-motion animated film. Due to budget constraints, he instead directed it as a live-action short, released in 1984.
  • Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film; there were 17 Victors and 12 Sparkys. Since each animator worked independently on different scenes, multiples were needed. They also needed backup in case a puppet required repair.
  • Incredibly talented artists were able to take Tim Burton’s original drawings and sculpt them into three-dimensional sculptures, which were then cast in a combination of silicone and latex. Their costumes are all sewn with miniature stitches to keep in scale. Wigs are made for them from real human hair and then applied strand by strand so that the puppets have a more realistic hairline. Inside each puppet there is a metal armature, which acts like a skeleton and gives the animator the ability to move the puppets and act out the scenes with incredible subtlety and finesse.
  • The sets for the film were built on tabletops. The vast majority of the miniature props for the sets were made by hand and hand-painted and detailed.

Mark your calendar: Frankenweenie releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012!

Follow Frankenweenie on Facebook, and check out Disney Pictures on Twitter for updates on other fun new family flicks! The best movies come from Disney – watch for the new animated film featuring a princess as the main hero {so cool!} – Disney*Pixar’s Brave releases soon too!

This seriously sounds sooooo good. We have a little bit of Scottish blood running through our family tree, and I find it really interesting to learn little pieces about our ancestors. Why 8 Navy Seals Were Cast to Lead this New Film

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment in cooperation with Relativity Media and The Bandito Brothers pledged today to give a portion of the proceeds from the Act of Valor Blu-ray and DVD to Operation Homefront. Operation Homefront is a national non-profit organization that provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors. ACT OF VALOR will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD everywhere June 5th – but you can pre-order Act of Valor now on Amazon for less than $20, and have it shipped free in time for Father’s Day.

movie about marines

IF YOU’RE NOT READY TO GIVE UP EVERYTHING, YOU’VE ALREADY LOST

The movie sounds incredible – eight real Navy SEALs have been cast in the lead roles, to ensure that you’re getting a realistic view into what our military faces daily in the fight against terrorism. The plot is centered on a team that is trying to stop a radical jihadist from sending suicide bombers into American stadiums and shopping malls. That really hits home, since that’s the kind of worry that so many of us have had in the back of our minds since 9/11. One of the Amazon reviews was written by a military member who got an advance showing, and says, “It is not a documentary, but it is the most relalitic military movie that I have seen.” I am seriously interested to see this when it comes out, and pre-ordered it today.

Portion of the Proceeds from the ACT OF VALOR Blu-ray and DVD to Benefit Operation Homefront

Operation Homefront provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors. A national nonprofit, Operation Homefront leads more than 4,500 volunteers with a national presence and has met more than 590,000 needs since 2002. A four-star rated charity by watchdog Charity Navigator, nationally, 94 percent of total revenue donated to Operation Homefront goes directly to support service members and their families. For more information about Operation Homefront, please visit www.OperationHomefront.net.

The ACT OF VALOR Blu-ray and DVD arrive June 5th just in time for Father’s Day.

Kilt: Are you Brave Enough to Wear One?

Kilt: Are you Brave Enough to Wear One?

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. From Disney and Pixar, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition and challenges destiny to change her fate….

Brave Premiers June 22, 2012

Seriously, how funny was that, right?? – “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida – she’s the kings daughter, a skilled archer, and totally independent princess. She’s determined to carve her own path in life – as all bright young ladies should! – and so she totally defies customs and traditions, which of course make some of the ruling powers quite angry. Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. {Isn’t that case with all wishes?? Lol.} The ensuing peril means that Merida has to muster all of her skills and resources, enlist the help of her triplet brothers, {who are clever, yet mischievous, as all brothers are..} and find out just how brave she really is. I love that this story features a girl fighting battles and being brave – awesome role model for little girls to see!

Can’t Wait for the Movie?

If you’re as excited as I am about a new film featuring a strong and independent little girl doing battle with the powers that be – then you’re in luck! I found a few cool things you can get now, and get a taste of the movie before it’s released next month:

  • You can get Brave for the Wii, XBox, Playstation, or Nintendo DS. I ordered this for our Wii – I can’t wait to check it out! Abby likes to try to play with the boys, and I love having a GIRL hero for her to see on the screen!
  • Grab The Brave Soundtrack – you know the songs will be good. Anything from Disney and Pixar is always pretty awesome, and I expect to find a few songs on here that become our new dinner-time dance party favorites. {What? Doesn’t everyone have dinner-time dance parties?}
  • Get some of the kids books – Big Bear, Little Bear is only $3.99, and is perfect for beginning readers. Or get Merida’s Wish for girls 6-9. Or you could even pre-order a copy of The Art of Brave, filled with gorgeous film scenes, for you to enjoy!
