Become a Playmanitarian – Giving Back

Trash Can Kidz

Playmanitarian – Making a Difference While Having Fun!

I love when a brand makes it simple and easy for you to give back, do good, and help others. So many of us want to do the right thing – but we don’t always know how or where or what to do. TrashCanKidz is a new company with a social conscience, with a passion for changing the way that children around the world get involved in social causes. Their mission is to be Ambassadors for the world’s abandoned generation of children – the orphans of the world, the kids living on the streets or in dumps, the children who need to be drawn out of the shadows, and shown that they DO matter.

CarryMeKidzRegistration

“When the lives and the rights of children are at stake, there must be no silent witnesses.” – Carol Bellamy

TrashCanKidz are totally adorable characters that you can only “adopt” with an invitation from an Ambassador. {Which you can get from me – I’ll give details in a minute, keep reading…} When you adopt your new Trash Can Kidz, you get a unique code that allows you to register online, get your own Ambassador invitation code, and then join The Forgotten World – an online game that teaches your child how they can make a difference in the lives of other children, and help make their world a better place! Every time you purchase a TrashCanKidz, 20% of the revenue from your purchase is donated to EarthKids International.

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” – Helen Keller

I chose to adopt Rose from the Trash Can Kidz site – and Abby loved her as soon as she arrived! She stands about 14″ tall, comes packaged in a trashcan style backpack, and includes an adorable little teddy and blanket. The details are so well done – this is a really high-quality item. She is dressed in rags, to help your child learn empathy towards those orphaned children that are being supported with this purchase – yet still, she is a totally adorable doll. From the pretty pink flower in her hair, to the gold buckles on her tiny sandals – she is perfect. Abby is still too little to understand the meaning behind this doll – but her older cousins that live with me get it. I’ve showed them the website, and they have played the game – and I was so proud when they later began asking questions…. “How do kids become orphans?” and, “Are there other ways that we can help those kids?” – Giving back is incredibly important to me, and organizations that help children are where I direct most of my time and money. To see such great thoughtfulness, compassion, and interest from the boys made me really happy.

EarthKidzInternational

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” – Aesop

EarthKids International – The Heart of TrashCanKidz – partners with the amazing World Vision to use the donations from each purchase made to learn where the greatest need is, and support projects that can provide for the basic needs of these abandoned kids.

Did you know…

  • There are an estimated 143,000,000 orphaned children around the world.
  • Every single day, 5,760 more children become orphans.
  • There are in excess of 100,000,000 street children in the world.

These children are the forgotten, abandoned generation of our world today. With all of the attention paid to issues to protect unborn children – we need to also remember those children who have been born into countries where they are thrown aside, and barely able to survive. It can seem like a depressing issue, the type of overwhelming problem that you can’t do anything about – But when you make the choice to invest in a TrashCanKidz doll for your child, your purchase can directly support the work that Earth Kidz International is doing to change things!

Your purchase can make a real difference in the life of a child!

  • Visit TrashCanKidz.com – Click Shop, then click to buy a Carry Me Kidz.
  • There are several great styles of Kidz to choose from, and right now they are each $20 off.
  • Use this access code when prompted: 325898560 – this is your exclusive invitation code to get into the site!

Now – sit back and wait for your new friend to arrive! I hope that you love it as much as we love ours – and THANK YOU for using your purchasing power to make a difference!

Domestic Violence Survivor: My Story #BraveWoman #CBias

Bave Woman Logo

What Does it Mean to be a Brave Woman?

This post is a tough one for me to write. But the information is incredibly important, and I hope that you all share it with as many women as possible, so that this message, and this information, can reach women who need it. What I want to talk about is an amazing cause that I was recently introduced to, called Brave Woman.

“Leaving a life of domestic violence is a series of moment-by-moment decisions requiring brave choices and bold actions. It can be hard to believe in ourselves when we have been beaten down by circumstance.”

BraveWoman.org is a group that is dedicated to helping the 1 in 4 women who are affected by Domestic Violence – A place where you can share your own story without fear of being judged, a place where you can find support and encouragement to make a change in your life, a place to celebrate every Brave Woman who has overcome her situation.

Why this matters to me

I’ve put off writing this post for a couple of weeks – I wasn’t sure what I wanted to say about this topic. Then yesterday I read a post from a bloggy buddy of mine, Christy over at Insanity is Not an Option – My Story of Suffering in Silence. She is the bubbliest, sparkliest, happiest person around, and it surprised me to learn that she’d been through such difficult times in her life. The fact that she shared her personal story made me brave enough to share my own – and I then realized that this is what the Brave Woman campaign is all about. By sharing out stories, speaking out about this issue, and letting women know that they’re not alone, there’s not something “wrong with them”, that it CAN get better – it gives them the strength and support that they need to get out. It helps every woman be a Brave Woman.

This video is really powerful. You can see that Domestic Violence is something that can happen to anyone – young, old, black, white, rich or poor. And the tactics that the abusers use are similar in every case – they put you down, make you feel like you’re not worth anything better, and take away your strength to leave. Whether they use words to hurt you, or their fists, what they’re after is control, and too many of them get it.

My Story…

I met a guy when I was 18, and fell into what I thought was love right away. He was a good guy, but he got into drugs. He bought them, he sold them, and he was hooked on them. He had an anger problem, and the drugs pushed him over the edge too many times. I was young, and told myself the same excuses that a million other women have told themselves – “But I love him, ” and “I know he’ll change.” But he didn’t. After a very scary night that ended with me climbing out a bathroom window in my pajamas while he thought I was in the shower, running away alone at night, with no shoes, through a bad neighborhood, and the involvement of the police, I broke it off. But of course, he was sorry, and I went back. I went through this horrible cycle for years – it took the news that he had gotten another girl pregnant for me to finally leave.

I thought I had learned my lesson…

But I hadn’t. My next serious boyfriend took me down the same path. He didn’t do drugs, but he had major anger problems. I never knew what would set him off. I thought if I could do everything just right, things would be fine. But he would still corner me in a room, screaming at me for hours. Then one night I came home late, and he was angry. Before I knew what was happening, he had jumped out of bed, and knocked me to floor with a pillow, and continued to hit me with it for a long time. The next day I excused it – “I just made him mad. I shouldn’t have come home so late. It was just a pillow – it’s not like he hit me.” But once you get to that level, it doesn’t get better. Over the next few months it escalated. One night he pushed me out of his truck, and I had to go to the hospital for a sprained wrist. I wanted out. I kicked him out. But we worked together, had the same group of friends – no one knew what was going on, and they kept pushing me to stay with him. Then one night we went to a big local festival. I was dancing with a mutual friend of ours and he got angry. He punched me – in public, in front of his sister, our friends, and the crowds. I knew then that if he could do that in public, then it was going to get really bad the next time it was behind closed doors.

Learning to be Brave

I finally had a few friends who supported me in getting away, and that made all the difference in the world. When you have a friend in this type of situation, it can be so hard to understand why she doesn’t just leave. But most of these type of men are incredibly manipulative. I can look back now, and see it. I have no idea how I fell for the BS that I did. What you can do as a friend –

  1. If you suspect abuse, ask. She probably won’t admit it. But she’ll know that someone cares. And she’ll think about it later. And the next time someone asks, she might tell them.
  2. Tell her that you’re there for her, no matter what. Even if she goes back to him 100 times, she will need you on the 101’st time, when she is finally brave enough to leave.
  3. Don’t judge her. Don’t tell her how stupid she is to stay. He already tells her that she’s stupid. Don’t abandon her because you don’t want to watch her mistakes. Be there when she needs you.
  4. And most importantly – Share the Brave Woman campaign with others. You can find them on Facebook, Twitter, and on their website.

A New Life

My old boyfriend wanted to be “friends”, and I actually tried to do that. I still didn’t see how he was messing up my head – I can see that now. Then I met a new man, and for the first time I realized how bad my previous relationships had been. I remember our first argument – and he asked me, “Why do you apologize so much, like everything in the world is your fault?” I realized, it was because for years, I had been told that everything that went wrong in the world WAS my fault. Just that realization helped me become even braver – to realize that I was a wonderful person, and that NO ONE deserves to be treated any less than that. Being in a stable, safe, and healthy relationship for the first time opened my eyes to how much I had been manipulated in the past. It was the very first time I’d ever been in a relationship that was just calm, and nice, and normal. Today – 6 years later, I’m still with that wonderful man, and we now have a beautiful baby girl. Change is possible – and you CAN do it.

Share your story

This is such a personal topic, and it was really hard for me to share my own story. But as one of the women in the video says – I’m not embarrassed by my past. The men who knocked me down so much should be embarrassed. I put up with bad situations for far too long – but I did get out. I have changed that part of my life – and although I still struggle with being strong, being assertive, and demanding respect, I am improving all the time. Reading the stories from women on the site helped me – so maybe my story can help someone else. If you’d like to share your own story, please leave a comment below. Do you know a Brave Woman? Are you a Brave Woman? What advice can you share? Let’s help every woman out there become a Braver – share the website, follow them on Facebook and Twitter – the more people this campaign reaches, the more women they can help!

Gift it Forward: Puppy Prep Kit {Part 2} – Donation Time! #ILoveMyK9 #CBias

Milk Bone Puppy Prep Products

“There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.” – Ben Williams

A couple of weeks ago I told you guys about a fun project that I was involved in, to put together a New Puppy Prep Gift Basket, filled with great products we got at Walmart, and then “Gift it Forward” as a surprise donation to a lucky pet owner. So, now I’ll show you how we used all that fun stuff to put the basket together, and you can learn who the surprise recipient was!

Puppy Products

“I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love.  For me they are the role model for being alive.” – Gilda Radner

We got tons of yummy puppy treats and snacks – plus lots of fun toys! I also grabbed a great collar and leash set that’s adjustable to fit just about any size dog – It’s red and silver, for the holidays. I used the dog dish that we purchased as a base, and used holiday tissue to help the products stay in place. I also grabbed a pack of cello bags from Walmart – they’re my total must-have product when making gift baskets!

Puppy Holiday Gift Basket

“If you think dogs can’t count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them.” – Phil Pastoret

Here’s the finished basket – so much fun! We packed it full of as much as I could fit – including Pup Peroni snacks, Milk Bones, and Milo’s Kitchen treats. There were over 10 new doggy toys included, plus the snazzy new collar and leash, more treats, a brush, and more. The only thing I wish I’d remembered to get was a fleece blanket – since new puppies, like new babies, can never have too many blankets. But – it’s filled with some great stuff, and I was super excited to give it away!

“My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.” – Author Unknown

Since we don’t have any puppies in our home, and I didn’t know of anyone who was getting a new puppy for Christmas – I wanted to donate our basket of gifts to an animal rescue group. When I found out that one of my moms coworkers volunteers for a really great local group – I knew I’d found the perfect person for this! She volunteers for K9 & Kitty Land Rescue – the rescue abused and abandoned animals, and take them into their own homes until they’re adopted. How great is that, right? So I knew that she’d be able to put all of these great products to good use! {And if you’d like to help too – visit their site to learn more. You can even make a PayPal donation, to directly support some of these animals and their vet bills.} She was so excited and surprised by this – and it totally made my day to get to do something to help their amazing group!

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” – Roger Caras

This little guys name is Opie – He was found when a trucker threw him out and abandoned him at a rest area, and a little girl grabbed him before he ended up in the traffic of the near-by freeway. {Read the rest of his story here – Opie’s Story.} How can you not love a group that takes care of little guys like him? Many of the animals that they take in have been hurt, or are sick, or malnourished. So every donation helps to cover the vet bills and other costs associated with caring for the cats and dogs until they find their “Forever Homes”. Donate today on their website – or if you’re local, email to learn how to drop off some donations of your own!

Check out the rest of our surprise donation trip on Google+!

Happy Holidays!

The Right Relief for the Real Problem – Share Solutions & Enter to Win!

Advil Congestion Relief

“What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?” – George Eliot

Advil Congestion is putting a putting a twist on its tagline – “The Right Relief for the Real Problem,” and providing literal relief in congested places across the U.S. from undersupplied schools, congested traffic lanes, and more. I love to see companies use the power that they have to do great things – and it’s amazing what their donations are doing to improve local communities! Learn how they helped Chicago get “The Right Relief” for their winter congestion problems –

“For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people’s love and concern for each other.” – Millard Fuller

What type of change would you like to see in your own community? Where is your communities congestion? In my town, I’d have to say that one of the biggest problems is fear. That fear causes congestion when it keeps people from moving forward, dreaming big, and actually doing new things. It’s the fear of change, which causes people to vote down and resist new ideas. The fear of spending and investing, the fear or things that are different, the fear that something ‘won’t work’. I would love to see Advil find a way to bring a new enthusiasm to my city – to encourage the people who are dreaming big to keep pushing for change, to break through that congestion of uncertainty, and make our community a brighter place! There are so many good things in my town, and we need to keep building on them, and motivate the whole community to work together to bring some new ideas to life. Just like a winter cold gets your head and chest all stuffed up, a fear of something different can get a city all stuffed up too!

Advil Wants to hear from you!

How can the Advil Congestion Relief Project help your community? Share your story of community congestion –

  1. What’s congested in your community?
  2. How does that affect your community?
  3. How could Advil® Congestion Relief relieve your community’s congestion?

Visit CongestionReliefProject.com and learn how you submit your story sharing why your community needs help. Submit by January 4, 2012, and you will be entered to win up to $30,000 for your community! Open to the US only.

“Average people and the average community can change the world. You can do it just based on common sense, determination, persistence and patience.” – Lori Gibbs

Holiday Entertaining & Giving Back – with Hickory Farms!

I love the holidays… You’ve probably noticed. And I love entertaining! So – I throw a lot of holiday parties. A party can be a ton of work, but you don’t want to allow your holiday parties to become too stressful. The whole point of holiday entertaining is to have fun and enjoy the season with your favorite faces! So, read on for a few tips and tricks, and learn how Hickory Farms {ohmyheck, my favorite!!} can help you save a little time and money – and gives you an easy peasy way to support a great cause.

Holiday Table Setting

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” – Hamilton Wright Mabie

Ok – so you’ve got a party to prepare for. You’ve picked the date. You’ve invited friends, family, and maybe a crazy neighbor or two. First thing – do a quick clean up of the house. When I’m entertaining last minute, this is what I do to speed clean: Grab a laundry basket, and go through the house picking up things that are out of place, then stick the basket in a closet. {Speaking of closets, make sure your coat closet has enough room for guest’s jackets!} Now, no need to clean everything, stick to the stuff that makes a difference:

  • -Grab a canister of glass-cleaning wipes to make all of your mirrors and surfaces shine!
  • – Do a quick vacuum of all areas people will see.
  • -Fluff up throw pillows, and add a pretty blanket to the couch.
  • – Dim the lights a bit, and set out bunches of candles. This makes any space more festive.
  • – Remember, it’s the little details that people remember. The picture above is from HGTV.com – you can find more simple ideas like this there too. No one will remember your semi-clean bathroom tile, but they WILL remember special little things like this!

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” –Calvin Coolidge

Now on to the most important part of any party – the food! Busy Mom Solution: Let Hickory Farm do some of the party prep for you this year! We all know that they have the best meats and cheeses, right? But they also have super yummy desserts, fruits and nuts, and more. Here are a few ideas on how Hickory Farm can come to your rescue for last minute parties –

  • Start with a great gift box like the Deluxe Smokehouse Collection. Now you’ve got 5 delicious meats, 5 cheese choices, and a couple of fun mustard jars for dipping! Start by using 2 of each, slice them, and arrange on a big holiday tray. Add some fruits like grapes or strawberries, and a few types of crackers. You’ve got a totally yummy appetizer tray!
  • Next, use your other 3 meats and 3 cheeses to make kabobs! These are super fun for kids, and easy for adults to eat while holding a drink and mingling. Just cut up your goodies into chunks, then thread them onto skewers – add cherry tomatoes for a pop of festive color if desired. Now spritz ’em with a bit of olive oil and sprinkle with fresh herbs. Amazing, right?
  • Hickory Farms can even take care of your main dish! Have you ever tasted their Spiral Sliced Honeygold Ham? Mmmmm….. Now you’re ready to whip up a few desserts and side dishes of your own – or check out the Fruits & Sweets category on their site.

Now that was easy, right? For the selection, quality, and huge assortment of goodies that come in a Hickory Farms gift basket – they are so worth it! These also make the perfect hostess gifts, and they even ship to soldiers overseas. And I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love Hickory Farms!

“Gift it Forward” – Create & Donate a New Puppy Prep Kit !! {Part 1} #iLoveMyK9

Shopping for Pet Supplies

“There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.” – Bern Williams

I’m a total animal lover. When we watch movies,  if someone gets hurt or dies in the movie, I get sad. But you should see the big ol’ tears I get in my eyes if it’s an animal that gets hurt!! I’m just such a sucker for anything fuzzy, floppy, cuddly, and cute. And I’m so glad that Abby got that from me… She loves animals. Her second word was Dog. {Right after Mom, and Hat. But Hat means Dad sometimes} Anyway… What I’m saying is, she looooves dogs. We got our new puppy when she was just 4 months old, so they’ve grown up together, and are best-est buddies. As soon as she learned to walk, they would explore through the house like Lewis & Clark – inside of cupboards, underneath shelves and beds, on top of tables and small cabinets – they’re like peanut butter and jelly, those two. So, when I heard about a project to put together a super fun “New Puppy Prep Kit” that I could give as a surprise gift to someone, I knew this was perfect for us!

Milk Bones on store shelves

“If you think dogs can’t count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them.” – Phil Pastoret

The first items on our list were dog snacks – Because just like my rowdy toddler, a puppy works up an appetite during his playful days. We were looking for Milk-Bone® Dog Treats, Pup-Peroni snacks, and some goodies from Milo’s Kitchen. All three of these are treats that my little dog Deuce likes, so I’m sure that the puppy who gets this great basket will be thrilled too. The prices are so much cheaper here than our local pet store – so I wasn’t surprised to see that some of the shelves were half empty!!

Choosing Dog Snacks

“Happiness is a warm puppy.” – Charles M. Schulz

Since Abby is a total expert on puppies, she of course had to check out all of the snacks before giving her approval, and allowing them into the cart. As you can see, she took her job very seriously – here she is evaluating the Milo’s Kitchen treats. But, after each package was looked at, squeezed, and chewed on just a tiny bit – she deemed them all to be great choices, and into the shopping cart they went!

Dog and cat Christmas stockings

“A person who has never owned a dog has missed a wonderful part of life.” – Bob Barker

Since it’s the holidays, and this Puppy Prep Kit will be a gift basket – I was SUPER excited to find this display of pet Christmas stockings!! So much fun – and ohmyheck, such a good deal!! The top row is for dogs, the second row with the fun fluffy feathers are for cats – and they’re each only $4.95!! Total steal, am I right?? Since we’re making a stocking this year for Deuce, and grandma always gets her 4 little dogs presents too, {yep, we’re one of those families. The dogs all have Christmas outfits too. Love it} we’ll definitely be back to pick up some more of these!! Tons of fun.

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” – Roger Caras

We added a few more fun items for the basket – {Toys, dog dish, tissue and bows to brighten it up, etc}, then picked up a few grocery essentials {like banana’s for my little monkey-girl} – and then headed for check out. I don’t want to show you everything yet… I’ll be putting this basket together in the next few days, and will show you everything we bought in the next post, when I show you how to build a basket to give away. {Come on, Christmas-time is all about suspense and surprises, right??} This gives YOU a few days to get out to your own local Walmart and pick up some supplies too! {Hint: Watch your local paper week of December 11 for a money-saving coupon on Milk-Bone® Dog Treats!!}

Who will YOU give your basket to?

The idea behind this super fun project for Collective Bias is to put together a really cool, and really helpful, “New Puppy Prep Kit” – a fun gift that you can give to a new pet owner this holiday season. Since I don’t know anyone who’s getting a new puppy this year, I asked around, and found the perfect person to gift to – She volunteers with an animal rescue group, and has taken in tons of abandoned and abused animals herself. She helps rescue them from bad situations, nurtures them in her own home, and helps find them new “forever” homes. I’m really excited to be able to bring her this big gift package – to help make the holidays a little sweeter for the next puppy she helps!

So – How about it? With the incredible prices at Walmart on puppy supplies, why not join me and put together a fun New Puppy Prep Kit to give to a deserving person, shelter, or group in your own community! If you want to “gift it forward” too – I’d love to see a pictures!! Please come and share photos from your Walmart shopping trip, or of the fun package you create, and especially the lucky recipient!! You can post them on my Facebook wall, or put them on your own wall, and tag me in ’em so I’ll see the fun!! You could also bring this as a donation to a food bank – people who are struggling to afford food for their families are probably having a tough time providing for their furry family members. ‘Tis the season to do unto others….

Share it Forward – #givingback

With your help, the o.b. Brand hopes to donate $25,000 to Huru International, a non-profit organization that provides sanitary protection to adolescent girls in developing countries. Why is this important? Watch the video, and keep reading, and you’ll learn why this is, sadly, a major issue for way too many young girls….

The lack of affordable sanitary protection can have devastating lifelong consequences for adolescent girls in developing countries. Unable to afford sanitary protection, countless girls resort to dangerous alternatives, such as finding and recycling used pads, or improvising their own from unsafe materials. Many more simply avoid school for the duration of their periods, missing as much as an entire month each school year. This creates insurmountable gaps in their education, which leads many young girls to abandon school altogether, and increases their vulnerability to poverty and disease, including HIV infection.

A basic necessity for us, an unaffordable luxury item for others

We take so many things for granted… Can you imagine being a teenage girl, and not having access to these types of products? I hear it often asked, “Why help those in other countries? We have Americans struggling that need help here!” And that’s true. There are many girls in the US that come from incredibly poor families, whose parents struggle to provide basic necessities. BUT – in those types of worst-case scenarios, most teenage girls can find help at school, at a friends home, or from other resources. In some developing countries, there are no other options. And the results can be devastating.

What YOU can do to help!

O.b. is raising money to support Huru International, and YOU have the power to help! It is incredibly simple, and your very simple action can make a world of difference in the lives of these girls. All you have to do to help is visit the o.b. Facebook page, and click the o.b. Outreach tab. Scroll to your state in the drop down menu box, then click the big share button to make YOUR donation, and share it on your own Facebook wall! The post that shares will let everyone know that you just helped make a donation, and encourage them to do so too. Now, how easy is that, right? How can you NOT help?

Visit o.b. on Facebook today to Share it Forward!!

Want to know more about Huru International?

“Since its inception in 2008, Huru International has developed a cost-effective solution to this often-overlooked crisis. Through the production of Huru Kits, the organization aims to provide girls with the resources and knowledge they need, including sanitary protection, to complete their education and safeguard their health.”

What is a Huru  Kit?

Huru Kits are provided to at-risk girls completely free of charge.  Each Huru Kit comes packaged in a drawstring bag that doubles as a backpack, and includes:

  • Eight reusable sanitary pads
  • Three pairs of underwear
  • Detergent-grade soap to wash the sanitary pads
  • A re-sealable, waterproof bag to safely store used sanitary pads

What is the o.b. Brand’s goal with the Share It Forward program?

O.b. hopes that this Share it Forward campaign can raise $25,000 in donations, which would equal 1,000 young girls in developing nations receiving one of these kits totally free – 1,000 young girls that now have a huge helping hand towards success. O.b. is committed to a MINIMUM donation of $10,000 – every single person who shares this message on Facebook equals an additional dollar, up to a total of $25,000. So EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. COUNTS. Thank you to all of you for helping to do your easy peasy part to help other girls around the world!

{Disclaimer: I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of o.b. and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.}
