How Busy Moms Use Skype to be More Productive

“All one needs is a computer, a network connection, and a bright spark of initiative and creativity to join the economy.” – Don Tapscott… My life has changed so dramatically in the past couple of years. The switch from a fast-paced job in retail management, to the even faster-paced life of a work-at-home mom has brought a lot of unique challenges. While the unpredictable nature of the work I do makes it tough to create a daily schedule, I do my best to keep up with consistent routines. I build in time for snacks, naps, housekeeping, and of course – working. And, with all of the awesome technology that exists, I’m able to work almost anywhere that my busy day takes me…

work from home mom

“The phrase ‘working mother’ is redundant.” – Jane Sellman

I usually get up with the sun – I start my day around 6am, grab a BIG cup of coffee, and head out to the patio with my laptop to start working. I check emails for anything urgent, then get out my planner to see what I have scheduled for the day. I try to do as much of my serious working as I can in the morning before the kids are up – things like phone calls, articles to write, or Skype chats with potential partners. Abby’s afternoon naps are kind of sporadic, so I can’t count on nap time to be a quiet time. And it can get awkward trying to have a phone call with a brand rep while you have a toddler screaming for another cookie in the background. {I’m sure you know what I’m talking about, right? Ah, the joys of motherhood.} Once the kiddos get up, I take a break to get them all dressed, fed, and set up with an activity – like a cartoon, puzzles, or coloring. I love that I finally splurged on a new laptop – so that as we move into summer afternoons, I can work on the patio while I keep an eye on the kids in the pool, or pack it up to take with me when we head to the park. Between blogging, freelance writing, campaign projects, and my social media addiction – I’m connected pretty much 24/7 by either computer or my iPhone. Crazy, I know.

Productivity Tools for Busy Moms

Since I’m online so much, most of the tools that I use each day to help me stay on track are techy-type solutions – I love, love, LOVE using Google Calendar to manage my family’s schedules. I use Mint.com to help me track my spending and keep good records. I couldn’t live without all of the amazing apps on my iPhone. And, when it comes to keeping in touch with business contacts – Skype is a lifesaver for me! We use Skype to connect with our extended family that live far away – {Abby loves to chat with her Papa} – and I just love the ability to get time face-to-face with people, instead of just speaking over the phone. I’m definitely a people person, so using Skype is a perfect solution for me. And when you’ve got a group of people who need to run a project together, there is just nothing better than getting them all together on a Skype group chat to bounce ideas off of each other. Crazy how productive those can get. So – if you’re ready to give Skype a try, here are a few tips for a successful chat:

  • Connection: Obviously you need access to the internet to use Skype – but you also need to make sure you’ve got a connection that’s high speed enough that you’re chat can be smooth and seamless. A slow connection can make your call really choppy and frustrating.
  • Location: You want to set up your computer in a quiet location, without a lot of background noise. If possible, find a room with good natural light – maybe near a window. Try to have a “clean” background without a ton of clutter, so that it’s not distracting the attention away from what you have to say.
  • Appearance: Ok – I Skype in my pajamas with no make-up all the time when talking to my family or friends. But if it’s business time – even with my blogging buddies – I bump it up a notch. The camera can kind of wash you out, so make sure to add a little blush and lip gloss. Some eyeliner and mascara will help your eyes stand out better on the screen too. Find a top in a solid color or small print, and a couple of great accessories. Not only will you look better on the Skype screen – but you’ll feel more confident too.

Once you think you’ve got these all down – practice! If you’re planning your first Skype chat as an interview or business connection, I totally recommend trying it out a couple of times with friends first, to make sure your volume settings are good, the lighting looks great, and your equipment all works fine. Don’t worry – a couple of times using Skype, and you’ll be a pro!

Semi-Perfect Homemakers LOVE this Stuff…

My home is anything but ordinary…. As many of you know, my household has changed dramatically in the past few years. I used to have a perfectly organized, spotlessly clean, and totally quiet home when I lived alone – just me and the cat.{Really, it was that good.} That was almost 3 years ago. These days, my home is filled with family – grandma, uncle James, my wild nephews, my Mister, and my little girl. Plus FIVE dogs. They’re small, but still. And of course, since I’m at home all day, and no one realizes that I really do work online all day, they think I’m just here bored all day anxiously awaiting the chance to do everyone’s laundry and dishes. Ah, the joys of motherhood, right? {Learn why Bloggers Have Messy Homes…} Are you a semi-perfect homemaker too? Get my tips on how to keep the house fresh and bright – even when you’re too busy to always do everything right!

“Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing.” – Phyllis Diller

The thing is, I actually don’t mind housework that much. I would have fit right in back in the 50’s – if my only job was to keep the house perfectly clean, cook amazing meals, and wear retro style aprons, I would be a happy momma. Seriously. Well, I’d [Read more…]

It’s Potty Time! Tips for Getting Started with Potty Training

It’s Potty Time! Tips for Getting Started with Potty Training… We’re in the very early stages of potty training right now. Abby is almost two, and is VERY ready to get rockin’ with this idea, but mommy has been a little reluctant, since I had NO idea how to even get started! But, thanks to the amazing peeps over at Pull-Ups, and their super fun Pull-Ups Potty Break site packed full of helpful tips, I’m ready for this new parenting adventure!

Potty Training Tips & Tools for Toddlers

Potty Training Tips for Toddlers

I realized a couple months ago that it was time to start looking into potty training, when Abby started telling us when she was wet, bringing us a diaper when it was time for a change, and getting really interested in watching me go potty. So, we got her a brand new little potty chair of her own – and right away, she wanted to sit on it EVERY time I went to the bathroom too. I thought, “Shoot, this is going to be soooo easy.” But, like most new stages of parenting, it’s not been so simple. A few things that are working for us so far:

  • Pull-Ups: These rock. I love that they pull up and down like big-girl pants, but that they also have the little pull-apart tabs on the sides, like diapers, to make it easy to change big messes too. Another thing that’s cool is that there are a couple different varieties to pick from – the Learning Designs, where the cute Disney princess design fades away when it gets wet, and the Cool Alert, to help kids learn to stay dry. Very cool features to help kids learn, right? {And they have overnight options too, so that kids can keep using their fun Pull-Ups that they love, but you can rest easy knowing you’re not going to wake up to a major mess.}
  • Great Potty Chair: Let your little one help you pick out their own chair, so that they’re excited about using it. {And – I am now a HUGE fan of the Tidy Tots now that I’ve gotten a chance to try them. Totally rock!} Make sure that the new potty chair is in an easy to access spot too, for little ones to get to whenever they’re ready to give it a try.
  • Big Kid Timer: I’m kind of lovin’ this tool on the Pull-Ups site – You can download it right to your PC or Mac, and use it to let kiddos know when it’s time to sit on the potty again. You know, Potty Time!! You get to pick either Lightning McQueen or Minnie Mouse – and it really is super helpful.

There are SO many other cool tools, resources, and tips on Pull-Ups.com too – and you can pick from the stage that you’re in right now – Getting Started, Keeping it Going, or The Big Finish. And I found SO much stuff there that’s been a big ol’ help for us already. Totally recommend checking it out.

Get your own Potty Timer too

Get the Big Kid Potty Break Timer for your own computer – to remind kids during the day when it’s time for another potty break. This is fun for them – but seriously helpful for you too. I know that I was always getting so busy and distracted all day, and would forget to take Abby in to try the potty again. So this is a perfect way to remind us both.

Make sure to check out a super helpful How to Start Potty Training infographic post too, for more easy to follow tips and tricks to help make potty training a success in your home.

So, stay tuned moms. Since we’re super early to all this stuff, I don’t have too much to share for tips or trouble shooting. But I’ll be blogging about our Potty Training Adventure here for the next few months, as a part of my new gig as a Pull-Ups Ambassador. You can see some of the other helpful posts I’ve been collecting on my Potty Training Tips board on Pinterest, and I’d love, love, LOVE to hear your best tips too….

What do you wish someone had told you when you first started potty training? Share some comment love!

Learn the 5 Most Important Sun Safety Tips for Toddlers

“Keep your face to the sunshine and you will never see the shadow.” – Helen Keller… Ah, summertime. I live up in Washington State – which makes most people picture rainy Seattle type weather. But we’re here in Central Washington – Yakima, Washington to be exact – which is totally different. We have a super serious set of four solid seasons, so summertime gets HOT here. Like, tons of 100+ degree days. My dad was diagnosed with Melanoma a few years back, {recovered great} – but it gave me a serious dose of reality when it comes to sun safety. Last year Abby was still awfully little, and didn’t spend too much time outside. But now that she’s almost 2, and ready to play in the pool, the sprinklers, and just run wild around the yard and patio all day – I knew it was time to get serious about Toddler Sun Safety. Ready to learn some great new tips to help you keep YOUR little one safe while they enjoy the summer sun this year too?

great products for toddler sun safety

“Anyone’s life truly lived consists of work, sunshine, exercise, soap, plenty of fresh air, and a happy contented spirit.” – Lillie Langtry

Last year was our first summer in this new house, with a big in-ground pool, patio, shop, nice yard, and a great big field out in the back for the kids to play. All that outdoor space is an amazing happiness to me – I love being able to have enough room for the kids to spend all day exploring and playing outside in the summer. {Plus, it makes it easier to keep up with housework when the spend most of their time not in it, lol.} But it means I’ve had to learn some new tips for keeping Abby safe when she’s spending so much time getting those bright sun rays on her all day. Here are a few of my fave tips:

  1. Know the Sun:The sun’s rays are strongest from 10am – 4pm each day – meaning that’s when the majority of the harmful UVA and UVB rays are getting to your kids. But, that’s also the main playtime hours of the day too! So – you can do your best to spend time outside before or after those hours – but since that’s not really all that practical a lot of the time, just make sure you take a few extra sun-safety steps during those hours
  2. Sunscreen: I’m a Coppertone Water Mom, which means we’ve learned a TON about why a great sunscreen is important. There are so many great varieties to choose from, so that you can find the perfect potion for your needs. Coppertone has everything from water resistant lotions to my fave – the Wet ‘n Clear spray that cuts right through water, giving kids protection as they move in and out of the water. Awesome. {Get a Coppertone coupon on their site!
  3. Protective Eyewear: According to KidsHealth.com, “Sun exposure damages the eyes as well as the skin. Even 1 day in the sun can result in a burned cornea (the outermost, clear membrane layer of the eye). Cumulative exposure can lead to cataracts (clouding of the eye lens, which leads to blurred vision) later in life. The best way to protect eyes is to wear sunglasses.” I didn’t realize how important this was – I only bought Abby cheap-o sunglasses, because they were cute. This year we invested in better protection.
  4. Drink Water: Kids get dehydrated a lot quicker than we do outside in the sun. Make sure to keep sippy cups or water bottles nearby at all times. {use the Koverz to keep kids drinks cold!} I make homemade ice pops too – with fresh fruit and lots of water- so the kids can eat ’em all afternoon. Whatever keeps ’em hydrated!
  5. Block the Sun, Not the Fun: When you can’t keep the kids indoors, and can’t keep them in the shade – Take advantage of the great protection they can get from fun products from SwimZip.This is a must-have summer brand for us – Seriously cute styles, and the material in the kids swimwear is UV 50+ – which is as good as you can get. Kids get extreme sun protection, look adorable, and you enjoy the ease of full zippers that make the swimwear super easy to take on and off!

The effects of sun exposure during childhood last a lifetime – so it’s incredibly important that as moms, we do the best we can now to protect that sensitive skin from damage. More and more people every year are diagnosed with skin cancer – let’s help ensure that our kiddos do NOT grow up to one of them.

How To Connect with Far-Away Family

“There is no friendship, no love, like that of the parent for the child.” – There is no friendship, no love, like that of the parent for the child.” – Henry Ward Beecher… I was a daddy’s girl when I was little. I loved going out fishing with him, although he still complains about all of the fish I let go. I remember that we’d always get those raspberry-filled powdered sugar donuts at 7-11 before we would head to the lake. It’s funny how those little things become such big memories. As I grew into the teen years, my relationship with my dad went through the usual challenges – He thought that as my parent, he was right. But as the teenager, I of course knew that I was right, lol. But now as an adult {ohmyheck, did I just admit that I’m officially an adult? } – and now that I’ve become a parent myself, my relationship with my father is much richer and fuller than ever. That’s why it hit me kind of hard last year when he made the decision to move to Seattle… It’s only a few hours away, but Abby is changing so quickly as she grows, and I hated for him to miss these precious years while she’s little. But – smart momma that I am, I knew there must be some type of solution. Something that would help us stay better connected. Some way for him to be able see Abby as she grows, and a way for Abby to get to know her Papa. I’m happy to announce that I have found the perfect solution to help our family stay close – and it’s so simple, it’ll work perfectly for anyone. Want to know what it is?….

connecting with loved ones

“In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future.” – Alex Haley

With Skype video chat, it’s super easy to connect with Papa a couple nights a week. And Abby LOVES it! She’ll come to my desk sometimes when I’m working, look up at the computer screen, and ask for Papa. She says, “Talk? Talk a Papa?? Pease?” Totally warms my heart. Because even though the drive to Seattle is only a few hours, with all of the crazy-business around here, we only get to visit him once every few months. At first, she would forget him in between visits… And it would take her a little while to warm up to him again when she would see him. But now she see’s him every week. She knows him. And I know it makes him just as happy as it makes us.

using skype to talk to grandpa

“To us, family means putting your arms around each other and being there.” – Barbara Bush

We can’t always be close enough to put our arms around each other – but thanks to Skype, we can always be there. And it’s not just my dad that we chat with. With the group video calling feature, you can add up to 10 people into one fun chat. Only one of you has to have an upgraded Premium account, and that person simply invites everyone else to the call. And of course, each of you will need a webcam, so you can see each other. We love to get my dad’s sister on our calls – and sometimes my brother and his kids will jump in too! Do not underestimate what a fun party you can have together – even from far away. Moments like birthdays are more special with Skype – we bring Papa right up to the table, so he can help sing Happy Birthday, and watch the kiddos blow out their candles. He can be here to chat when one of the kids has a bad day. Or we can all just get together virtually to laugh and tell stories together – just like we do in real life. I cannot recommend this enough.

how to skype

It’s time to say more and stay human. It’s time for Skype.

I also use Skype a ton for business. I’m a work from home mom, and the majority of my contacts and partners are in other states – sometimes even other countries. Email works great for connecting with people, phone calls are perfect for clarifying details, but to really brainstorm new projects – talking face to face on Skype is the way to go! I’ll share a few tips on how I make Skype work for my business  with you soon. Until then, I want to know…

How to Pull Off a One Bag Event

Ready for your next event or party to go ONE BAG?… That means a party that creates only one bag of trash for an entire event, from birthday party to holiday open house. With a little bit of smart planning, and some of my fun entertaining tips – Anyone can make their next party a “One Bag Event!” You’ll spend less, waste less, and send less to the landfill. And THAT is something to celebrate!! Keep reading to see how I’ve hosted not one – but THREE! – parties over the past couple of weeks, and was able to make each of them a One Bag Event…

creative party foods for summer bbq

Let’s Talk Trash!…

This is a little peek at our recent celebrations – We had a Pirate Pizza Party a couple weeks ago, to celebrate getting our outdoor space ready for summer. We took the cover off of the in-ground pool to start prepping it for opening, cleaned up the grill, and spruced up the patio area. Then we had a super fun Tacos and Floats night, and got a free pair of tickets to the new Ice Age movie when we bought the supplies. {So cool, right?} Then just a couple of days ago we invited a few friends over for a Hot Dog Bar – which is when I created my little Hot Diggity Dog in the last pic. During the summer we entertain non-stop, which I love. What I don’t love is how much trash piles up after a party. So, I decided to give the Glad One Bag Challenge a try, and see if the tips and ideas they shared could help me cut down on all that garbage. Keep reading to see how we did, and learn how you can do it too…

Learn How to Pull Off a One Bag Event

Honestly, I did not think we were going to be very successful with this challenge. I mean, we seem to always end up with a ton of trash after every BBQ. But, it wasn’t at all as difficult as I expected – it’s really just a set of small swaps you make that add up to a BIG decrease in what you have to toss at the end of the party. Here are the tips that worked best for us:

  • Invitations: Instead of spending a bunch of extra money on those custom designed invitations you’re thinking about, use an online invite site like Evite.com, Ping.com or punchbowl.com. Or reach everyone where they’re already at – set up an event page on Facebook to give everyone all of the party details – including reminders leading up to the big day!
  • Serving Dishes: Stock up on ‘real’ serving ware – either some fun melamine dishes like the French Bull 12-Piece Melamine Dinnerware Set, {have it, love it, use it all the time!} or choose compostable: sugar cane, fallen palm leaves, and corn are some of the most popular materials. For the past couple of parties I used these great compostable party plates, cups, and utensils – and I was blown away by how sturdy they are. Super cool green geniuses to come up with this stuff.
  • Decorating: Ok, this is one of my favorite ways to creatively cut down on trash. Instead of buying a pile of decorations from the party store that you’re just going to throw away afterwards, think about what you already have that you can use to brighten the party atmosphere. A few ideas – Jars: You could spray paint them and fill with flowers, or use them to hold pre-mixed party cocktails. Food: Use the food itself as the decoration, which leads to almost no waste at all. Make a Watermelon Turtle for summer BBQs, or use chips, dips, and other snack foods to build a Snackadium during football season. You could have the kids color their favorite coloring book pages and hang them like a pennant banner, or just use pics of the birthday child to decorate at their party. Tons of fun ideas.
  • During the Party: Make sure to set up an easy peasy spot to recycle – you could even use a Triple Laundry Sorter lined with Glad Bags {they now have less plastic, and more stretch – meaning you can stuff more into them and have less waste} to make it super simple for guests to toss their cans, glass bottles, and regular trash.

Now – Give yourself a big high five of congratulations! You just saved a ton of waste from clogging up your local landfills, did your part to leave our world a little greener and cleaner for your kids, and saved a ton of money too!
