Getting Ready for School: 5 Fun Preschool Learning Tools

“Children have to be educated, but they have also to be left to educate themselves.” – Abbé Dimnet… I’ve always been addicted to learning. I’ve been a voracious reader since I was a kid – during the summer, in my middle school years, I used to go to our local library every week to search out interesting new finds. As I moved to high school, I would read at least a full book every single week – sometimes a couple of them. And now, as a mom, I still enjoy learning… Whether it’s building new skills to help me grow my online business, or discovering fun ways to teach Abby new things – I’m kind of a learning junkie. One of the most important things in the world to me is helping Abby grow into the kind of person who is curious… Someone who wants to learn, yearns to broaden their horizons, and enjoys expanding her mind. Which is why I am totally in love with a new set of tools we recently discovered, to help her prepare for preschool – they’re called Schoolies, and I think you’ll love them too!

Five fun preschool learning resources

Five fun preschool learning resources

Preschoolers will love meeting the unique and colorful cast of Schoolies characters, created by artist and designer Ellen Crimi-Trent and published in Priddy Books’ signature early learning formats. All of the books are totally interactive – with clock hands to move, stickers to add, cool fold-out scenes, and even wipe-away pages to practice their skills. The graphics are clean and bright, the design is modern and fun, and they really help encourage kids to get excited about learning new skills. Check out how much fun Abby has drawing and counting in the School Days book, and then see some of the other fold out and pop up action to0:

Learning is Fun with The Schoolies!

As you can see – these sets are so full of color and wonder, and my 3-year old daughter absolutely LOVES them! You can get hard cover board books, soft cover sticker books, and dry erase flash cards too.

My School Day – From waking up to favorite lessons to the bus ride home, kids will love learning to tell time as they spend a day with the Schoolies. Includes a play clock with moveable hands so young readers can turn to the right time as the Schoolies enjoy their day. The clock opens up to the far left, then as they go through the school day by turning pages in the book, they can practice turning the clock hands to match the different times of day. They learn about telling time, and also get used to how a school-day schedule will work.

School House – Fold-out pages create four scenes in and around the Schoolies school house. Includes press-out play characters and accessories, plus sticker sheets. This is the book you see in the video above, where the pages unfold into cool rooms – then in the back of the book is a folder that holds all of the 3D buildable characters, followed by the page of stickers. It’s really sturdy and well made – but if you have a kiddo as young as Abby, you will probably want to play with them, so they don’t get too rowdy with this and rip pages with all of their excitement and enthusiasm!

“You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.” – Clay P. Bedford

Let’s Get Ready For School – Early learning book with wipe-clean pages so that all of the activities can be repeated, reinforcing learning. I love that this is more colorful and fun than a basic paper activity book – and that it can be used over and over again. My youngest nephew is 7, and was recently diagnosed with mid-range Autism – so since he’s here every day before and after school during the school year, I’m planning to do more activities for him and Abby, to help them both reinforce the skills they’re learning. I love that this book is something that he finds fun too, and that they can both use as many times as we want.

Making Friends and My First Day of School Storybooks – Two reassuring and positive stories about overcoming shyness and being nervous to start school. Books include two sheets of fun Schoolies stickers that kids can use to decorate the pages, which helps to get them more interested in the topics. Both have really great messages too, that are easy for little kids to understand.

Activity Flash Cards – Super cool box that’s filled with 26 double-sided Schoolies activity flash cards, that help children learn their ABC’s, 123, colors, shapes and more. You can use the flash cards as is to challenge little ones, or give them the included dry-erase marker so that they can practice tracing the numbers, words, and letters. It even includes a parent activity sheet guide, to give you creative ideas to use the flash cards in lots of different ways. LOVE these.
