My Messy Laundry Room Makeover

What does spring mean to you? For me, it means that I’m planting seeds for my spring garden, getting serious about weight loss since summer is approaching fast, and stocking up on great products to do a major spring cleaning extravaganza around this place. Spring really motivates me to get organized again – I mean heck, in winter, it’s so dark and dreary you don’t even really see those monster dust bunnies hiding in the corners… But once the sunshine of spring arrives, it’s hard to ignore the mess. And… We’ve been working on some MAJOR remodeling and DIY projects lately, so we’ve DEFINITELY got a lot of extra mess {watch for a big post soon!} – but between the major craziness of all that, I’m also working on those little “trouble spots” that we’ve ignored for far too long. Check out one of the worst offenders…

Laundry Room Makeover

Does this Laundry Space Need a Makeover, or What?

This isn’t a real laundry “room” – it’s just a little space in the hallway. When you go from the kitchen to our Master Bedroom, you pass this area built into the wall, and then an equally embarrassing mess in the next little section that includes our second fridge and my filing cabinet. It’s extra awful because it’s what people see first when they walk in through our back door! I’ve ignored this hallway for waaaaay too long – not only is it a mess, but it’s also a wasted opportunity! I need to make better use of this space, make it pretty, and make it much more efficient. {Because when I have to be confronted with it in photos, it’s even more embarrassing! Nothing like showing your “dirty secrets” to the world to motivate you to clean, lol.}

Make a laundry space more efficien

 How to make the laundry space more efficient

One of the best parts of this little space are the built in cabinets above the washer and dryer – totally my style {the people who remodeled this house before us didn’t always have taste that matches mine, lol} – and big enough to hold all of my cleaning supplies. But – this big piece of wall is a big challenge. You see the cut-out lines? Behind that panel is the hot water tank, so we have to keep it accessible. The previous owners had added a couple of hooks for mops and brooms, which is helpful – but it just seems like we could utilize it much better. {And – don’t judge me on these old appliances, lol. We’re shopping for a sweet new set in red. It’s on the buy-soon list!}

Laundry room challenges

The other challenge is that there’s all this space between the wall and the dryer – but any piece of furniture there needs to be easy to move quickly if we need to get to that water heater. So, I’ve been using two little carts on wheels, one in front of the other. The laundry baskets fit on top, I can easily move one if I need supplies from the one in the back… But I’ve just had a mess on them for awhile now. And see how I have myBlack & Decker Steam Mop {the LOVE of my homemaking life} and other gear just shoved in between? Not pretty.

Bankers Box for home organization

So, what’s a busy mom to do?

First of all – I’m making time this weekend to do a little makeover. If I don’t put it in my planner, it doesn’t happen, and I’m tired of saying that I’ll fix this area “next week.” So I stocked up on some simple but smart supplies to help make it easy – New cleaners, spray paint, this cool Magic Holder Wall Organizer to store more of my gadgets, and this little Hanger Holder for all of the shirts I like to hang dry. But – my FAVORITE thing for the laundry room are my new Bankers Boxes from Fellowes {received a complimentary set from them, to show you guys how amazingly helpful they can be!} Love, love, LOVE the print. And they’re super sturdy – so they can hold all of those little “extras” that I need to keep handy, while still looking good. They even have little clear plastic windows on one side – so you can see which box you need at a glance. I’ll be sharing the Laundry Makeover in just a few days – but until then, I’ve also got a chance to WIN a set of these sweet boxes for yourself too! Check it out…
