“It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air.” – W. T. Ellis… Nothing puts Christmas in my heart like some amazing holiday music. Whether it’s silly songs from the Muppets Christmas album in the kitchen while Abby and I bake cookies, some mellow classics like Bing Crosby while sipping cocoa in the evening, or a mix of festive tunes on Pandora while crafting homemade gifts – I’m a total Christmas music junkie. And while I already have a million favorite songs, I’m always on the lookout for new takes on great songs that I love.
A Rita Coolidge Christmas
One thing that is pretty important to me is making sure that the music we listen to in my house is appropriate for little ears. Abby is only two – but she’s turned into a little parrot, copying everything that she hears. I mean – I’m not conservative, at all. But I do want to keep things innocent and simple around Abby, you know? Kids grow up too fast as it is, I don’t need to help it along. And that is one thing that I absolutely love about this new Christmas music album from Rita Coolidge – its got beautiful music, wonderful messages, and is perfect for listening to with the family. It’s filled with awesome favorites like “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” “Let It Snow,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Baby, it’s Cold Outside” (a duet with raspy voiced drummer Lynn Coulter), “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” “Little Drummer Boy” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” All serious favorites of mine!
Who is Rita Coolidge?
At first, her name wasn’t familiar to me at all. But it should be – this girl is a powerhouse who’s been around – everywhere – for a long time. She’s a two time Grammy Award winning singer, and she’s been honored with a “Lifetime of Musical Achievement” award at the 2002 First Americans in the Arts Awards, as well as the recipient of a “Native American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement.” In the late 60’s, she was a pretty popular back up singer – and work with other rock royalty soon followed, including tours and recordings with artists like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan. You know where else you might have seen her? When VH1 first went live years ago, she was one of the very first veejays there! She comes from a very close-knit family – her father was a Baptist minister, and he used to play holiday music for a little Rita during her childhood. In fact – White Christmas was the first song that she ever sang! So it’s wonderful to see her put together a full album of holiday tunes.
What can you expect to hear?
Well, after listening to this CD for the past week, I wanted to find a video of one of her songs on YouTube, to be able to really give you a taste of how rich her voice is, and how amazing this collection is. But… I couldn’t find anything current at all. What I did find though is this video, which I am so in love with. Yes, this is an oldie. But how fun is it to see Rita Coolidge so young – performing with one of my all-time favorite artists, Johnny Cash? It also features June Carter, and Rita’s husband at the time, Kris Kristofferson. Don’t let the oldies style fool ya – this CD is very much a modern take on some of your favorite classic songs. But seeing her perform with these amazing artists kind of gives you a taste of how truly successful she has been over the years…
