Halloween Jokes for Kids

Just Joking is a new, totally free app for kids from National Geographic Kids. It’s super fun – it’s filled with fun animal facts, mixed with silly jokes and surprises. It mixes in educational aspects with knock-knock jokes, tongue twisters, riddles and more. The kids love the silliness of it. I love that it keeps them occupied in the car or waiting in lines – and that it’s clean fun. It’s a free app – check it out here: Just Joking Free App. And there are bonus joke packs you can buy later for less than a buck a piece too. So, to give you an idea of how much fun it is, I’ve got a list of Halloween-themed jokes for kids.

Halloween Jokes for Kids

Check out the selection of jokes from the app, tell ’em to the kids today, and tweet your favorites. I’ve always loved silly kids jokes like this – I giggle at the jokes on Popsicle sticks, and laugh out loud at really cheesy jokes on Laffy Taffy wrappers, so this app is right up my alley :) And as an Ambassador for National Geographic Kids this year, I obviously am a big fan of pretty much everything they put out there – always perfectly designed to appeal to the kids in our house. Enjoy!

How to DIY Simple Kid’s Halloween Costumes

Are you a fan of PBS? I am. Some of our favorite shows are on PBS Kids – like Calliou, Super Why, Dinosaur Train, and everyone’s childhood fave, Sesame Street. And a new cartoon we recently have gotten hooked on is Word Girl. Which is why I totally loved this DIY Halloween costume video showing you how to turn simple items into adorably frugal kid’s Halloween costume – WordGirl, the beloved superhero from the show. I’ve also included another super fun costume idea that would be fun any time of year too. Hope you enjoy too!

It’s Starting to Look a Lot Like…. Halloween!

I love the holidays. I love celebrating. I love parties. I love decorating and crafting and cooking and baking and fun. And Halloween gets me extra excited. Not because it’s my favorite holiday – but because it’s like, the kick off to the best part of the year for me. I mean – Halloween comes with loads of cool stuff anyway, like costumes and pumpkins and treats. But it’s like the door opening to a non-stop extravaganza of holiday fun for the whole rest of the year.

Fall wreath - ProFlowers fall and Halloween decor

We decorated the house weeks ago. Grandma {my mom} lives with me part of the time, and always helps us put up decorations. I remember helping her when I was a kid {and we still have so many of the same decorations we had back then – I love it.} So it makes my mom-heart happy to watch Abby get so much enjoyment following along with grandma and putting up fun stuff for each holiday too. Priceless. We’ve got a spooky graveyard outside, lights in the bushes and trees, and lots of ghosts and goblins inside the house too. So, while I have lots of awesome pieces to decorate the house {and am trying to cut down on buying more. *Trying*} – you do always need a few new things for a holiday like Halloween. I’m talking costumes, baking supplies, and of course – CANDY.

Abby and I decided to take a little shopping trip to Target yesterday, to pick up a few fun festive additions. I’d already ordered one Halloween costume {Little Red Riding Hood} – but since we have four different Halloween parties to go to over the course of two weeks, I figured it’d be a good idea to have two costumes. I mean, you know how messy a 3 year-old gets with her treats, right? And I am so so so so so so sosososososooso SO in love with her in this Merida costume. {You’ve seen Brave, right?} We love anything with Disney Princesses, but Merida does have a special spot in my heart… She’s a very feisty, independent, fearless girl. Just like Abby. [Read more…]

How to Host a “Pretty” Spooky Halloween Party

This post is sponsored by Personal Creations. Opinions are my own.

“Hold on, man. We don’t go anywhere with “scary,” “spooky,” “haunted,” or “forbidden” in the title.” – From Scooby-Doo… I totally relate to this quote! I do not like scary movies, creepy decor, haunted houses {unless they’re the non-scary type for little kids} or anything else like that. But I do love me some Halloween fun!! I just like to keep it on the fun side – slightly spooky, but still… you know, happy. Which is why I am SO excited to share some tips for you to host your own “Pretty-Spooky” Halloween Hangout – we had a blast this past weekend decorating, eating sweet treats, and watching classic Halloween movies. Check it out – and share your fave Halloween party ideas with me in the comments at the end. I love hearing from you ladies.

How to have a non-scary Halloween party

How to have a “Pretty Spooky” Halloween Hangout Party

You know I love to put on parties, right? For awhile I felt like I was working too much – and even though technically I was spending all day at home with Abby, I wasn’t spending enough real time with her, you know? So we now try to take an hour or two every afternoon for some type of themed activity – like our Little Mermaid Crafty Day, or Monsters U Lunch Date – so this past weekend we decided a fun theme would be to host a Halloween Hangout, since we’d have Abby’s cousins for the day. We were super lucky to have gotten an awesome package of products earlier in the week – Treats from Shari’s Berries, beautiful floral decor from ProFlowers, and some super duper fun personalized Halloween pieces from Personal Creations. I usually like to do a lot of DIY when entertaining, but sometimes it’s actually really nice to be able to order some amazing stuff that’s all ready to go. And everything was so gorgeous – and a lot of it WAS made by hand. Check out the awesomeness….

“There is a child in every one of us who is still a trick-or-treater looking for a brightly-lit front porch.” – Robert Brault

We already have the front yard decorated for Halloween – including lots of twinkling orange lights, a pretend graveyard in the garden filled with tombstones, and some spooky black cats perched atop the fence. This absolutely beautiful fall wreath from ProFlowers is the perfect addition – and is such a pretty way to welcome party-goers to our house all season long. I may weave a strand of tiny solar lights in it for Halloween, to greet trick or treaters. And – it’s hard to tell because it looks so fresh, but this is actually made from dried flowers, so it can be used year after year. LOVE. [Read more…]

Tips for Trick or Treating with Toddlers

Spooky Graveyard sign for Halloween

Eat, drink, and be scary….

I love holidays. All of ’em. Yes, I have a whole long wall in our shop that is lined with floor to ceiling shelves filled with big plastic tote boxes of holiday decorations, baking pans, serving dishes, and fun stuff. {They’re color coded by holiday, so that they’re easy to find.} Yes, the Mister of the house thinks I’m crazy. But yes, we have a lot of fun! And one of my favorite holidays is Halloween – we decorate the yard super spooky for all of the Trick or Treaters in the neighborhood, I put up a ton of ghosts and pumpkins inside the house, and I love coming up with fun new ideas for treats, activities, crafts, and decor – the bigger Abby gets, the more fun it is to create holiday magic with her.

Toddler pink puppy Halloween costume

Trick or Treat, be real sweet, give us tasty treats to eat!

This was Abby’s costume last year – she was the cutest little pink poodle I’ve ever seen. This year she has two costumes – an adorable ladybug outfit with sparkly red wings, and a LaLaLoopsy princess style poofy dress that is totally fun. We have 4 Halloween parties, plus trick or treating on the big day, so I wanted her to have more than one outfit to make it all a little bit more fun. She just turned two in July, so she’s still a bit too little to go for a full night or trick or treating with her big-boy cousins. But I definitely want her to experience the fun of it all. So what we’re doing again this year, just like last, is to go out early while it’s still light to walk around door-to-door in our little cul-de-sac, where it’s safe. Then we’ll head to the church down the road for their big Trunk or Treat event. If you have little ones, I totally recommend finding one of these in your area – you don’t have to be a member of the church, it’s a fun, festive atmosphere where they go trunk to trunk around the parking lot to get candy. Each station is decorated up, it’s super safe since we’re not walking along dark roads, and it’s a lot less ground for little toddler legs to cover. For the next few years, I think this is the way we’ll let Abby go trick or treating.

Hershey Candy for Trick or Treaters

When witches go riding and black cats are seen, The moon laughs and whispers, Tis near Halloweeen.

After the Trunk or Treat, we head back to the house for the rest of the night, so we can hand out candy to all of the neighbor kids. Abby LOVES to see all of the other kids in their costumes, so this is another great way to let her share in the trick or treating fun, without having her out in the cold and getting too tired. We fill up our big plastic cauldron with everyone’s favorite candies from HERSHEY’S, and spend a couple of hours answering the door. It’s a nice way to get a quick chat in with the neighbors we don’t talk to often enough too.

Spooky HERSHEY’S Peanut Butter Cup Cookies

On Halloween night, after we’ve visited the neighbor houses, and then gotten our candy fix at the Trunk or Treat, and once we’ve run out of candy to hand out – we turn off the porch light, and settle in for family night. We make dinner and some treats, and snuggle up on the couch to watch semi-spooky movies with Abby. She loves Nightmare Before Christmas, Ghostbusters, and or course, It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown! It’s a great way to wind down after the excitement of the day. This recipe is one of my favorites, and it’s a great way to use up leftover candy. You melt down some chocolate HERSHEY’S bars to coat your crackers with, melt a REECE’S cup in between the crackers, then stick your pretzel legs in between. Super simple, and so much fun. Get the directions here: Spooky HERSHEY’S Spider Cookies. They’re a perfect mix – chocolate and peanut butter, sweet and salty, spooky and cute. You’re kids will love them!

Do You Know the True Cost of Trick or Treating?

The true cost of trick or treating…. Let’s break it down: Approximately 38 million trick-or-treaters will roam America’s neighborhoods this year, collecting candy from nearly 59 million households. That means for every one trick-or-treater, there will be about 1.5 homes distributing treats. Sounds like good odds, right? Now, the average adult spends $21.05 on Halloween candy. So, if all the purchased candy were distributed equally among all trick-or-treaters (which it actually isn’t, since 41 percent of adults eat candy from their own bowls), every child would come home with a bag of candy worth $31.58. That’s a $10.53 profit for every trick-or-treater! So, if your household is sending out at least one trick-or-treater, by the end of the night you may have earned back your initial candy investment and then some. But wait, there’s more to consider… [Read more…]

Here is one of my fave creepy party ideas – make a delicious Avocado Margarita, using Avocados from Mexico, which are hands-down my favorite type. You could even whip up some non-alcoholic versions for the kids too!

Ingredients:

1 avocado from Mexico, halved, pitted, peeled and chopped

2/3 cup sweet and sour margarita mix

1/2 cup tequila

1/2 cup orange-flavored liqueur (such as Triple Sec or Cointreau)

1/4 cup fresh lime juice.
Preparation:In a blender, mix up avocado, margarita mix, tequila, liqueur, and lime juice. Cover and process until smooth. Add 3 ice cubes, then process until almost smooth – but don’t OVER process. Serve in glasses rimmed with salt, and garnished with avocado slices.
Enjoy!
