“Don’t confuse having a career with having a life.” – Hillary Clinton… This is one of my favorite quotes. When I was younger, I was a total go-getter. I worked my way up from my first job – a cashier at McDonalds at 16 – to working as a merchandising manager, and doing fashion marketing and displays in some awesome retail stores. I loved it for awhile… I thrived on working hard, beating sales goals, and moving up to new, higher positions. But after awhile, I realized that while I was seeing traditional success – moving up the ladder, earning more money, etc – I wasn’t really satisfied. Why? Because while I had a career – I didn’t have a life.

There are a lot of companies out there that are starting to realize how important it is to have more women in management roles. Studies have shown that women bring a different set of experiences and skills to management – we’re more team-oriented, tend to be better at compromise, and have proven to drive profit and results. Pepperdine University studied Fortune 500 firms and found that companies that promoted women most often made 18%-69% more in profits than median companies in their industries. And, in a recent study of over 7,000 leaders that was mentioned on Forbes.com – “at every level, more women were rated by their peers, their bosses, their direct reports, and their other associates as better overall leaders than their male counterparts — and the higher the level, the wider that gap grows.” Clearly, women rock. But we already knew that, right? As busy moms, we already have learned how to juggle a million tasks each day, how to manage and prevent conflicts, and how to best use a limited set of resources. So, when we’re looking for a career, it’s important to find a company that appreciates and values what we bring to the table.

And I can tell ya – they don’t just talk the talk. Over the past few months I’ve had the opportunity to meet and speak with high-level employees from all parts of the Best Buy company. They really stand behind their commitment to being the best place to work. Check out a few of the benefits they offer:

I’m sure most of you know, SO many companies these days are cutting benefits – or don’t offer any benefits at all anymore. But Best Buy understands that if you want the best people working for you, you have to provide them with the best benefits. And things like health insurance, flexible hours, time-off programs – those go a long way toward helping you have a great work-life balance.
