What does “Living the Green” mean? Well, it’s a way of living your life that embraces a simpler, cleaner, greener way of living – without breaking the bank! I know that a lof of my own friends and family assume that making changes to be more eco-friendly mean spending more money, but honestly – that couldn’t be further from the truth. Seriously.
How to live green on a budget
Sure – some of the products marketed as “eco-friendly” cost a lot more than other similar products. Buying an organic cleaner can cost more initially than a dollar store cleaner, and organic fruits and veggies are higher priced than tradional produce. But don’t let those kinds of things stop your enthusiasm for living green – there are PLENTY of other options for you too!
- Shop local: Instead of paying big bucks at the grocery store for organic veggies or free range eggs, head to a farmers market or join a local co-op, to get fresh foods produced safely right in your own area. These are usually much cheaper than buying them at a big box store.
- Grow it yourself: Even if you live in an apartment, with no yard, you can still grow at least a little bit of your own food. If you have a patio or porch, you could plant a couple of giant tomato plants in pots – then you can create your own salsas and sauces all season long. Or if you don’t even have that much space – plant a row of little herb pots in your windowsill!
- Make it yourself: You can make just about any cleaner imagineable at a fraction of the cost of store-bought products – and since you control the ingredients, you can make them safer and greener too. You can make a year’s worth of laundry detergent for about $20 bucks, or browse here for recipes for a ton of homemade cleaners.
- Shop smart: For the products you can’t grow or make yourself, do a little research to shop smart, and get the most bang for your buck. One great option is White Cloud’s GreenEarth brand, which is available exclusively at Walmart – It’s made from 100% recycled fibers, is Forest Stewardship Council certified, and even with their incredibly high standards for quality, they still have totally affordable prices. What a win-win, right?

I am excited that White Cloud is taking up the living green initiative. My family is pushing head first toward the goal of green living, and let me tell you, “It’s not easy being green”. I absolutely love it when a brand that I have used in the past shows me that they are supportive of the goal. I probably will make a Pinterest board a little later. The best things I am finding with our own journey is that we have less rash and hive break-outs from harsh chemicals and additives in everything from laundry detergents to foods that we consume. It’s one day at a time for the Towns family, and we are steadily marching along.
I agree on the shopping local, and the making things yourself. We strive to be green in our family. I will check out the White Cloud. I do hope that White Cloud isn’t merely green washing though. Great post.
