Does your kid need a tablet yet?… This is a big question, when even kids as young as 5 are getting cell phones. {20% of them, in a recent study by Norton. Totally blew me away!} And tablets are one of those things that every kid wants, and insists that they need. But for the littlest kiddos – is it truly a great learning tool that’s worth purchasing? Or just another gadget that they’ll break or lose interest in within a few weeks – becoming a big waste of money? Well, let’s look at one of the hottest gadgets of the year for 3-9 year olds, the InnoTab 2S, a new tablet for kids from VTech.
VTech InnoTab 2S WiFi Learning App Tablet
Ok – that product name is a mouth full, but totally gives you a great picture of what this gadget claims to be all about – a tablet for kids ages 3-9, that has full WiFi capabilities, making it super simple to download from their library of over 200 games, apps, and learning programs. Sounds great, right? Well, we tested it out in my home, with a big bunch of tech-savvy kids, to see if it lives up to the hype.
Is the InnoTab 2S a good tablet for kids?
Well, first of all I was impressed by how sturdy this feels. I have a 2 1/2 year old toddler, and take care of my nephews {ages 6 & 9} every day before and after school too. When you add in friends, playdates, and parties here at our house – toys have got to be darn durable to stand up to the crazy abuse they’ll be put through! But even after a couple of weeks of being tossed around – including being passed around and tested out by over 15 different kiddos during our annual Christmas party – this thing doesn’t have so much as a scratch. Another feature that makes it a good value is that it can be set up with profiles for up to 4 different kids – and still have one additional option for “guests” to play too – meaning friends that come to visit. Each profile has different settings and levels, and is customized with names and pictures for each kid. So whoever picks it up to play is going to have a different experience – perfect for them!
Features and cool tools on the InnoTab 2S tablet
This was a big favorite right away – the little tablet kick-stand on the back of the InnoTab. You can set it to sit in either direction – tall, or sideways – depending on what you’re using on the screen. This is super cool for Abby, when she wants to watch a video on it. Another totally amazing addition to this tablet is the WiFi – that makes it incredibly easy to download new apps and games. Plus – it gives you the ability to connect to my VERY favorite option available for the InnoTab – the VTech University! Kids can enroll here, and follow a full curriculum of learning that’s made totally fun, and is appropriate for their age and skill. {Plus, kids who complete the course before May of 2013 are eligible to win a $25,000 college scholarship. Sweet!} Here are a few more amazing things that this tablet can do:
- It’s got a camera with a swivel camera that takes photos AND videos.
- Load it with interactive animated e-books, creative activities, tilt sensor learning games, and an awesome collection of applications. Kids can enjoy e-books, music, photos, and videos on-the-go just like mom and dad!
- It’s got a 5” touch screen, microphone, pop-up (onscreen) keypad, and a stylus.
- Cartridges with licensed characters (sold separately) teach essential skills in reading, logic, and creativity. Additional apps such as games, e-books and music can be easily uploaded to the InnoTab 2 through VTech’s Learning Lodge Navigator.
- Parents can also track their child’s progress on a variety of educational milestones and lessons. With 2GB onboard memory and an expandable SD card slot, the InnoTab2 will keep your child engaged for a looooong time.
VTech InnoTab – the Tablet for Kids
So, what’s the verdict? After using this for weeks, comparing it to other gadgets the kids have used before or are currently using, getting their feedback, and talking to the kids and parents at our holiday party, I feel really confident that this InnoTab tablet for kids is a seriously solid buy for any family with kiddos ages 3-9 – and maybe even younger and older. Abby’s only two, but she caught on to how to use it really quickly – and the older kids {12-15} still had fun with this too. You’ll love that it can have separate accounts for each kid, the wide assortment of games and apps to keep it interesting for a really long time, and the durability. The addition of WiFi, a camera that takes video, and the kickstand are all super cool features. I definitely recommend this as a great buy!
